Gameplay: The Suffering features ultra-mature content. You take on the role of Torque, an inmate who must face much more than his own inner demons and the harsh and gritty reality of death row for murdering(or not) your family and finally escaping this monster infested prison compound. 
The game features nine levels, frightening character morphs, and more than 10 deadly weapons from the shiv to the tommy gun to aid in the survival of this freakish nightmare!!

The best parts of the game are its immersive plot, range of monsters and attacks, plenty of gore, some light puzzle solving, 1st person to 3rd person switch, Torque turning into beast in rage mode, thick and eerie atmosphere, flashbacks unfolding in real time and 3 distinctly different endings depending upon how you choose to survive (such as being helpful to other people in need or brutally killing them, will later have an affect on the story and portraying if Torque is actually really guilty or not of murdering his family.) The Suffering is one of the best in its genre and hey, it's the best for a freeware. 
Come on, turn the light’s down low, grip your controllers and keypads, crank your sound ystem to max and get ready for a thrilling adventure and onslaught of the blood thirsty monsters late at night.

The ads are geographical location dependant, if lucky you won't have any or probably streaming ads are no longer served now. Navigate to HK_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE->Surreal->Riot Engine. Delete SettingsDX105.
Next Run Suffering.exe and the config utility box will pop up. Under the Audio tab, uncheck the box next to Use 3D Sound Buffers.

Okay Well I can't get this to work. I've tried everything I could think of. When I try launching the game regularly it wont launch. When I launch it with Windows XP Service pack 2 it launches, but there are lots of missing textures. I can't run the update installer, because all I get is a "1628: Failed to complete Installation" error. I've read all of the fixes posted, and none of them work. I've tried deleting my entire temp folder, and that doesn't work, and I also can't find the Local Security Policy thing anywhere. If you know how to fix any of this please any help would be greatly appreciated.
What O.S are you having and it's version?
1. Do this first and then click on Graphics tab. Is the option for Detailed Texturing greyed out? Uncheck the option for Detail Texturing. Run the game again.
2. Some of your files might be corrupted, you might have to re-install the game again after uninstalling, or your downloaded file might have got corrupt, in this case you will have to re-download the game again.
3. Your system should be connected to the internet to play the game.
4. You will have to launch the game (Suffering.exe) twice to run properly in most cases.
5. You don't have to install the update patch if you're running the latest version of the game from the download site. (v 1.1)
Okay so I found out why I was having broken textures, it was because I had The Suffering Ties That Bind installed, and apparently that causes the first game to have broken textures.
Ya it might have messed with the DirectX somehow. I believe everything is fine now.?
dude the game is not working in mine pc. i am coonected to internet then also it says to connect and i tried to install the patch also but says some error like 1942- or something like someone has stated above. i use xp sp3 plz i tried using run with adminisrator but then also not working.. help
Please describe the error in detail, the error code and such. I'm playing the game right now on Win7 64bit with no problems whatsoever.
I don't think you would have problems once you are connected to internet. Try running the .exe file twice.
Having the same trouble running the game (Windows 7 x64), but if I run it, then run it again (Task Manager shows two instances of Suffering *32) it works fine. Strange!
I got really scared when I(character) was looking in the mirror and a ghost appeared from behind and i saw his reflection
Will not run without internet connection. It specifically says this when starting because it is adware supported.
I've played this game. It's very good. You won't be disappointed if you like fully immersive, 3D, first person shooters. It is scary at times and has a good story line.
Great game. I used to play it years ago and I got stuck in the electric chair room. Really frightening and creepy, especially when you hear the noise, you don't see anyone and suddenly monsters fall from the ceiling. Turn off the light, wear headphone and get ready to be scared.
George.J i can't play the game. It installs ok but when i try to play the screen becomes black for some seconds and then returns back to normal. I tried both the installers from the links you provided and also i couldn't find any documentation over the internet. I'm using Windows Vista.
1.Have you blocked the game from accessing the internet as I mentioned in the article? Try unblocking it and play the game again.
2.Are you running the game with Administrater rights? If not, try that.
3.Try running the game in compatibility mode for XP/NT.
If nothing works, run the patch
Hi there. Sorry to email you like this but i was just wondering how do you stop the game from accessing the internet? Ive played it once with the internet because i couldnt without it and really wanted to play the game.
But i dont want to keep having to use my internet.

"Well, i guess after all, before launching the game, you'll have to be sure your internet connection is active otherwise you won't be able to play the game as supposedly upon starting the game you'll see a short video-ad that streams from the internet which vanishes with mouse click and the same upon closing the game". This is what one of the forums said.
I last played the game way back during late '09 or early '10. I was haunted in my dreams for some night's during that time so I thought to share it with all of you. My system is connected to the internet for 24hrs but I blocked all the connections that the game was trying to make and I was not affected with a hair of any adverts back then. Am not sure how the game has changed over these months. I have an awfully slow download speed(25kbps) to download this game now, so sadly, I am unable to test it now.
By the way, in the FreewareFiles download link which i have given, there is a user comment, the latest one actually which may help

Run in administrator mode.
I guess here you might have to re-define the software restrictions policy to complete installation of the patch.
Click Control Panel->Performance and Maintainance->Administrative tools->Local Security Policy->Software Restriction policy->Click Action tab on top->Enforcement->Select all users except administrator.
Complete installation of the patch by right click on patch->Run as Administrator.
Sounds realy cool game. Btw i managed to reach up to Administrative tools, can't find local security.
Type secpol.msc from the start/run menu.
Thanks for your effort.I've searched for secpol.msc and didn't find it. Also after a brief search i found this http://www.vistax64.com/vista-security/99916-secpol-msc.html. Anyway,i don't think there is a way to play this game. Keep up the good work.
