Free Utility Removes Duplicate Files from Your Computers
Duplicate files can hog a lot of space on your PC. And if you have a big MP3 collection you'll almost certainly have a lot of duplicates. Fast Duplicate File Finder finds duplicates folders and sub folders.
The program compares the content of your files so it will find duplicates even if they are using different file names.
It uses fast binary comparison algorithm and has an internal preview supporting a lot of image, video, music and text file formats. You can also preview the files in binary mode. When the scan process is finished the program displays all duplicate files in groups and can automatically mark the older files for deletion.
I haven't compared this program to the other duplicate file finders in the Best Free Duplicate File Detector category, but it does have the advantage of running on Vista and Windows 7.
Update: after recently using this program, I discovered that the free version is limited. It completed the scan, but when I tried to delete some entries, I got a message saying that the free version is limited to 10 files. I would use one of the programs recommended in the Best Free Duplicate File Detector category as most have been updated to run on Vista and and Windows 7.
Deleting duplicate system files can cause problems so I suggest you only use this product only on your media folders and other personal data area. You know, the data that you've already backed up, right? Or the data that you back up before running new programs. I'd hate to see your data go spinning off into the land of the lost.
Fast Duplicate File Finder runs on Windows 7/Vista/XP/NT/ME/2000/2003/98

-there is an option that protects system files and folders and it is turned on by default :)
Great tool indeed! The latest version can also find similar files :)
Awesome tool and runs extremely fast. I recently downloaded it from ZDnet's home page as it was featured and I can say that this free tool does much better than the shareware ones I tried.
The interface is also very easy to use and the option to preview the files is very handy.
I vote for it with tow hands!
Cheers

Try Recuva - it managed to get 3,000 files back from my hard drive AFTER I had wiped and reimaged it. Very useful as I had not wanted to reimage the computer - accidentally overwrote the MBR or something like that so the computer wouldn't boot. Finally had to reimage the machine but Recuva still did its job well - if you accidentally delete something you should try Recuva... :D
btw, thanks for the app - it should be useful to clean up my machine. Wonder how many MB I'll get back... :)
