Free Online OCR Service
I don't have sufficient need to justify installing an OCR program but I do occasionally need to convert an image containing text into real text. Luckily I stumbled on a nifty web service that does the job for free.
It's called http://www.free-ocr.com/ and it will accept images up to 2MB in PDF, JPG, GIF, TIFF or BMP formats

I tried it on screen shots of a web site and screen shots of a PDF document and it worked perfectly.
Some screen capture programs have OCR built in but most don't. If yours doesn't you should bookmark this site as one day you will need it.

I nearly tried all free online OCR services. All of them give more or less the same quality but not the same usability. Therefore, I would like to recommend i2OCR. It provides a balance between accuracy and usability.
goodocr.com is not bad. Though it only supports English now.
NewOCR.com is a free online OCR service, that recognizes multilingual text from a scanned document or photo, handles image files in different formats, can process 29 languages (Bulgarian, Catalan, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovene, Spanish, Swedish, Tagalog, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese) and supports layout analysis, which means that it can interpret multi-column text.

I heard it's fine too/
Converted text perfectly. However it will only do the first page of a document and does not do any formatting or layout. My doc was a table. But they are both on the way. Lots of great potential once they add those two features.
