A Popular Photo Sharing App for Mobile Devices

Last week we mentioned Pixlr-o-matic as an easy-to-use photo editor which you can use for changing color, lighting effect and adding a frame to your photos. For this week our pick is Instagram, definitely a good app to keep if you have an iPhone or other compatible devices.

Instagram also makes it easy to add effects to your photos with more than 15 custom designed filters such as Amaro, Rise, Hudson and others. After selecting a custom filter, you can make some fine tuning with linear and radial tilt-shift blur effects, and toggle a frame on and off from your photo.

But this app is not just a photo editor, it takes a step further for you to sign up a free account and join the Instagram photo social network. You can keep your photos in your account, share them with friends, follow photos uploaded by other members, post a comment, check out the feed, and slide through the most popular photos on the network.

The Instagram network service has now more than 14 million users for its iOS app, which won the honor of being Apple's iPhone App of the Year for 2011.

Update: Now Instagram is also supported on the Android platform. And it's worth noting that in April 2012, this app was acquired by Facebook for $1 billion in cash and stock with a pledge to allow it to remain independent.
