Free Email Backup Programs
As the dutiful editor for a couple of email backup categories here at Gizmo's Freeware, I always have my eye out for new free email backup programs, particularly something for Microsoft email clients. They seem to be hard to find. In replying to a comment in the Best Free Outlook Express Backup category, I stumbled on (Googled actually) a motherlode.
StaticBackup, Inc has free individual backup programs (scroll down the page to find the free versions) for Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail, Outlook, Outlook Express, IncrediMail, Thunderbird, Becky, and Eudora. (They also have full-featured commercial programs that back up any or all of those email clients.)
I briefly tried the free backup program for Windows Live Mail. Static Windows Live Mail Backup Free backs up/restores all your Windows Live Mail registry entries (contacts, settings, accounts, etc.) as well as your messages. It was very fast and seemed to work fine. I only have a small experimental store of messages in Windows Live Mail, and I didn't try any of their other programs, but I'm confident that the focus of StaticBackup's offerings is a solid indicator that they know what they're doing.
The reason that I hadn't found StaticBackup before is that their business is based on commercial versions of these programs, and they aren't agressive about pushing the free ones. If you use one of the email clients listed, and don't have an email backup program you like, then give one a try.

I downloaded the Static Backup program for Microsoft Outlook 2007 (Vista) but I do not see the icon or how to open the program? Can someone help me.
I have two questions...why isn't this available for Yahoo? And the most important one is I have about 3 years of email stored on Yahoo. Is there anyway to download them? ie. like a batch? Is there software that does any of this?
Yeah you can't really ever argue about free mail backup. The best things in life are free, after all.
I use "Outlook 2007/2003/2002 Add-in: Personal Folders Backup". It is a free Add-in by Microsoft and seems to work well. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=8B081F3A-B7D0-4...
Downloaded and installed "Static Outlook Backup 2.9c Free Version." The splash screen tries to get you to upgrade to the Pay version. Fine, I can ignore that.
Archive settings are a snap. When I hit the "Backup" button, I get the "Backup" panel with an "Archive Output File Name" window, which allows me to select destination and file name or generate an auto-name-with-time-stamp. Nice.
But where is the "Go" button? The program just sits there. The help directory says, "Click on the 'backup' button inside the backup panel." There is no button.
So much for easy of use. This thing is a waste of time.
Which one would I use for MSN mail please?
OK, now you guys confused me.
So which one is the best? I am tired of copying my pst files every time I format.
I need something to backup everything in outlook without creating too many pst files.
Please???
Thanks for this, there is a freeware download. Installed easily and works just fine for T-Bird.
Sure wish they had back-up software for NetZero/Juno email, rather than being stuck with their priority-style backups.
I don't get it. Why not just backup your .dbx files? That's what I do for OE.
Yes, I used to do it that way myself. Microsoft even has a guide. Some people prefer not to have to think about it though, I guess. ;-)
Cheers
Mozbackup is also great. It started out a little rough around the edges. The latest version seems polished and it works well.

Thanks for the report Wdhpr.

When you're looking for the free versions of programs you often need to look hard. The software publisher is often not very eager to have you find it. In this case, it's right on the only download page, but you need to scroll down a bit.
I suggest you ignore the ill tempered comments to the contrary that you'll find below.
Cheers
What's up with listing "free trial (X day evaluation and then you gotta pay)" software as freeware? Did someone not do his/her homework? Mail Store is free. There are other good, truly free apps.
IMAPSize lets you back up IMAP email accounts and provides other useful IMAP features:

Thanks for this link - this program is great! Using it to backup my gmail account.
I aM A FREELANCE WRITER ON THIS STUFF AND GETTING USERS TO BACKUP ANYTHING IS LIKE PULLING A CHICKENS TEETH. RJ
Perhaps you should stop shouting at them.
Amic Email Backup is my choice, it's freeware & easy to operate:

Yes indeed, it's the free, older version 2.0. The current version is 2.2 and is not free. Looks interesting. Offers backup for many email clients, but not direct backup for POP or IMAP accounts like Gmail, etc., as MailStore Home does.
Cheers
I think mailstore also does outlook and other desktop base clients?

works perfectly for me.
FWIW there are two sections on the page to which the link takes you, the top section is the fully featured version the bottom section is the free variants.

Also Mailstore does not Seem to backup Incredimail..
Colin J...
I just tried this Outlook backup Free and it was going to use my outlook archive file as the one to backup. Uninstalled it.
Forgot to add that it would not let me browse around to find the correct file.
I just rated this one star. To be fair it was not because the software was bad. It was because this site listed it as freeware when it is really trialware.
Forgive me, but are these free? I clicked the link and it said it was just a 20-day free trial before having to purchase a licence. Have I missed something?
Boy, oh Boy, if anyone (including Google) ever made some way to Backup and Achive Gmail easily to text files, I would use it and give them their Harddrive room back on their servers.
Since GMail offers free POP3 access, all you need is to download your messages via POP3 via some client that subsequently allows export to text files. I'm sure there's got to be a suitable Thunderbird extension.
And speaking of Thunderbird, MozBackup meets my needs quite nicely as far as backups go. (I only wish it was as simple as copying a single Outlook .PST file.)
