Download this Computer and Data Security Threat Guide from Sophos for free.
The A to Z of threats defines the many types of threats and what they do, from Adware and Autorun Worms to Viruses and Zombies. It's a fun read, the writing is simple and clear, taking a complex subject and breaking it down into bite size chunks. From the e-book:
Whether you’re an IT professional, use a computer at work, or just browse the
internet, this e-book is for you. We tell you the facts about the threats to your
computers and to your data in simple, easy-to-understand language including:
* Everything about Adware, Brute force attacks, and Ransomware
* How to avoid viruses, Trojans, worms and spyware
* How to remove media securely
The book is 114 pages and contains three main areas - A-Z of threats, Security Software, and Safety Tips. It comes as a downloadable PDF file. The A to Z of threats section is self-explanatory. The section on Security Software explains the kinds of software and hardware used to secure computers. The Safety Tips section has a rundown of some steps you can take on your own, with sections on avoiding viruses, trojans, worms and spyware, avoiding hoaxes, choosing secure passwords, using removable media safely and more.
The virus timeline is interesting with a few surprises; 1981 and 1982 brought the first two Apple viruses, with 1971 having the dubious honor of the first worm.
