Free DVD authoring software
DVD Flick
I have searched high and low to find a free DVD authoring program that a novice can use. I found it.
DVD Flick aims to be a simple but at the same time powerful DVD Authoring tool. It can take a number of video files stored on your computer and turn them into a DVD that will play back on your DVD player, Media Center or Home Cinema Set. You can add additional custom audio tracks, subtitles as well as a menu for easier navigation.
Burn near any video file to DVD
- Support for over 45 file formats
- Support for over 60 video codecs
- Support for over 40 audio codecs
- Easily add a menu
- Add your own subtitles
- Easy to use interface
- Burn your project to disc after encoding
- Completely free without any adware, spyware or limitations
I burned my first DVD movie and it was a complete success. I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was.

It might be easy to use but that 50 limit thing isn't. If you are taking short shots of scenes, or whatever you will have hundres of files, meaning you have to burn 50 at a time. I need to find something else. I'll try some of the above.
I think we need a new category for Best Free DVD Author :D.

Agreed. It would be great if you'd like to create and edit one :>)
I saw that coming :D. But ahem, I would not take it up :D. Sorry :P

I had to author a DVD recently, and I tried out some programs.
DVD Flick is good, and is very popular.
I tried DVD Styler too... it does the job of writing the DVD, but understanding how to get the menu done is difficult. I could not understand it... may have to read more about it.
I tried Koyote Video to DVD, and I was pleasantly surprised to find the program really good. I had not expected it to be that good. It allows to build a menu, choosing background, renaming individual titles, and other settings. Does the job well.
Another product which I found very good is WinX Dvd Author. I got this for free from a recent offer on WinX. The product does the job really well, and I would advise people to try it, if the company puts up a free offer again.
I had tried other programs like AVS To DVD, DVD Videosoft's Video to DVD, GUI DVD Author... not satisfactory.
I had also tried ZC DVD Creator, the free offer of which was recently put here on the TSA site, but was not impressed with it. Although, it writes a DVD, but it outputs a single VOB file, even if you input more than one file. That will be a problem when chapter handling is to be done I think.

I love DVD Flick but I have noticed problems syncing sound with video. I set DVD Flick to create chapters, which it does, but the lips on screen are slightly out of sync with the sound. ANyone else have a problem or am I cursed?
I too am having problems with the sound out of sinc since i updated DVD FLICK wished i hadn't updated now, anyone know how to get the older version back
I'm having the same problem but I found if you adjust the audio setting on whatever player you are viewing the DVD in it seems to sort itself out. (For example on my Phillips DVD player I set the audio to LPCM 48K.) It doesn't always solve the issue however. I only started having this problem when I upgraded to version 1.3.0.6 build 734.
DVD Flick is good, but it only allows for 50 videos in a project. That's inconvenient, when you have a bunch of short videos that you'd like to make a four-hour DVD with.
It can use more but it depends how you add the videos. The limit of 50 is for different titles, but there can be several clips within 1 title.
that's a lie. you can only add several video SOURCES (same type, dimensions, etc) to one title.
How do you add more clips to a single title?
I've been using DVD Flick for a while now, and it really is a great application. I just recently found another similar application though, that may be even simpler than DVD Flick (if that's possible).
It's called DVD Coach, and can be found here:

Like DVD Flick, DVD Coach is also FREE.

I used to use DVD Flick but I now use DVD Styler. I got introduct to DVD Styler from Linux and found that they have a Windows installer application. The nice thing about DVD Styler is that you can customize the backround of your choice. Not like DVD Flick where you have 4 templates. DVD Styler is also a free program and can be found on the link below.

I recently started using DVD Styler as well, and I like it much better than dvd flick. Not only is it easy to set backgrounds for menus, but you also can add buttons and control exactly what everything does. I'd say it's not as simple as DVD flick, but still not very hard to figure out, and gives you much more customization power.
I've been using it without problems also. Better make a whole project from beginning to burning ( it uses ImgBurn - included in the package ). If one save as ISO then it's quite hard to burn it and make it usable ( I almost quit using it before I decided to make the full project). BUT beware : I was not able to make the Menu options to work. If you choose to make menus, it hangs in the end of the operation when it's authoring the DVD ( if anyone finds how to do it, please post here ). It is also quite slow, so don't use it if you're in a rush. But it does the job and creates real DVD's playable on any external player.

I'm using the latest version and it still hangs in Author DVD, during "Generating menus...".
I had the same problems when I used DVD flick to only make an iso. However, when I made the full project, the DVD did work properly, including the menus. The first time the menus did not work, but then I found I had to check two check boxes on the "Menu Settings" dialogue: [_] Enable menu and [_] Autoplay menu. Once I did this, the DVD worked including the menu. The menus are somewhat restrictive - I couldn't find a way to disable the language menu setting, for instance.

this is a great app, thanks
Agreed, this is such a simple app to use and works perfectly. I tried a lot before I found this and had almost given up on the freeware options.
