Free Download: 70 of the Best Free and Open Source Games

From 3D Scrabble to Command and Conquer this list should help you find something fun to play.

Red Ferret has put together a three part series showcasing 70 downloadable free and open source games. They've added great descriptions to all the games. A few games are free while in pre-release, have a free demo, or have a java script version. There aren't many of them and all are noted in the descriptions. All the games run on Windows. Some are cross platform, so if you are running Linux or OSX check the game site to see what platforms are supported.

At the time of this writing all the links were working and went where they said they would.
There's not much else I can add other than have fun playing. :)

The links don't seem to be working at this moment.. the URLs are giving a database error. did your site get gizmo'd?

by rhiannon on 19. March 2010 - 2:34  (45780)

Possibly gizmo'd, but the site is up and running now for me .

No Battle for Wesnoth? One of the best turn-based tactical strategy game. great MP, tons of campaigns and let me take a snap from their site:

"200+ unit types. 16 races. 6 major factions. Hundreds of years of history. The world of Wesnoth is absolutely huge and limited only by your creativity - make your own custom units, compose your own maps, and write your own scenarios or even full-blown campaigns."

Great addition.

Yeah, i'm suprised this wasn't listed.. I'm not a big fan of Wesnoth, but it's usually considered "the" free game

Another place for free game is:

There is also Abandonia which has allot of older games that requires DosBox.

The wikipedia link is great, thanks for passing it along. I've seen Abandonia but haven't spent any time there, I'll have to give it another look.

Thanks for the games Rhiannon. Have you tried the following link?
Crush the Castle is a legendary game.

Cheers mate, nice list. I played some free half decent PC games in the past, this list shows tons of titles I never new. They still should have put in GTA1 here, that game is free and still great classic stuff.

I think I'll be trying out FlightGear tonight and Maybe Spring:1944 at the weekend. Great.

Hey, thanks a lot! A fantastic collection!:)

Woohoo a free mmorpg. thanks rhiannon, i'll be downloading Planeshift right away.

by HeWhoRocks on 10. March 2010 - 17:37  (45317)

Me again. I had a play with PlaneShift and would recommend giving them a few more months to work out the bugs. At the moment it appears to be held together with bits of string and sticky tape, but the potential for a good mmorpg is there.

@grf Thanks for the input on that one. =)
