Firefox: Format Pages for Printing

Here's a great Firefox extension for those pages that don't have a "Print" option.

The developers describes it this way:
"Allows editing of the web page content while in Print Preview mode. Editing the web page prior to printing can compact the layout and remove unwanted content such as adverts, sidebars and blank pages. Any element can be formatted, hidden or deleted."
This add-on is currently compatible with Firefox versions Firefox 3.6 - 5.*
Perfect for those of us who've been looking for a way to print web pages with proper formatting. :)

It is fantastic and I've used it for a while now. Last week I switched to using Firefox Aurora due to it's much improved memory usage and quicker startup and guess what, I can't get PrintEdit to work properly anymore. I had to go back to using the "PrintWhatYouLike" Bookmarklet until PrintEdit is updated to work with Firefox 6 & 7 builds. If you are still using Firefox 4 or 5, PrintEdit is on the "must have" list!

Rfine; There are few ways to force add-on compatibility, with the add-n Nightly Tester Tools probably the easiest. You can also change the settings in about:config (a search will produce many results).

I tend to wait until all my favorite add-ons will work with the newest version of Firefox, but if there's an extension you can't live without it's an option. :) Rhiannon

Thanks for the suggestion Rhiannon. I always use the "Add-on Compatibility Reporter" extension when testing developer versions of Firefox. All my favorite extensions are working fine with this compatibility add-on except PrintEdit. When activating PrintEdit in Firefox 7 the URL bar and my bookmark bar disappear and never come back when exiting PrintEdit. I must restart firefox to get them back. I guess I should be happy that all my other extensions work well. I really like the new performance in Aurora so I will have to wait for a fix.
Have a great day Rhiannon!

*** Update ***
I just found version 5.1 of PrintEdit designed to work with version 6 of Firefox. I works with version 7 also. Printing from Firefox is good again! :-)

Rfine; Excellent! I'm happy when all my Firefox add-ons work too.
Thanks for the update on Print Edit running on Firefox Aurora. :)

I am using XP SP3 and have just installed this extension. It looks really nice and I expect it will save me ink, paper and loads of time. Thanks Rhiannon. Keep the tips coming.

GreedyLlama: You're welcome. I agree it will save ink and paper - I can't count the number of times I've printed a web page that includes a few sheets with very little on them. Print preview helps but this is better. :)

Looks great - but when I try to install the download it says it doesn't know to which program it belongs... Running Windows XP, Firefox 5.0 (says there are no updates)...
???

PS.
Well, did succeed when going into the extensions page of Firefox and searching for Print Edit...

JF: The link in article didn't take you to the Mozilla add-on page for Print Edit?

by rhiannon on 18. July 2011 - 17:44  (75772)

JF: I'm glad you got it working. :)
