Firefox Addons
Last Update: Sat, 07/12/2008 - 08:02 — JonathanT
Hi
I don't think this site has a list of good Firefox addons? Maybe that could be added. Especially in the security-privacy area in my opinion.
Thanks

In case anyone is interested, we added a Firefox Add-ons page:
http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-firefox-add-ons.htm
If you contribute to this, PLEASE LINK to the download page and GIVE A DESCRIPTION of why it's better than other similar add-ons. Otherwise it's a waste of time, people can just go and browse the Mozilla site.
CY is editing this page now I think.

Hi
Well a list to start is:
McAfee SiteAdvisor (many issues)
Finjan SecureBrowsing
WOT
Netcraft toolbar
Dr.Web anti-virus link checker
NoScript
Adblock Plus (http://adblockplus.org/en/subscriptions)
CustomizeGoogle
CookieSafe (not compatible with Firefox 3)
CS Lite
RefControl
SafeCache (not compatible with Firefox 3)
SafeHistory (not compatible with Firefox 3)
TrackMeNot
Stealther
TabRenamizer
ShowIP
And I know
FEBE (not compatible with Firefox 3)
MediaPlayerConnectivity
VideoDownloadHelper
FoxyTunes
ForecastFox
Foxmarks
DownThemAll
are very popular
MediaPlayerConnectivity and VideoDownloadHelper have nothing to do with privacy/security, McAfee SiteAdvisor is one of the Mozilla "problematic extensions", it's not even featured in their site anymore. In the past, I could never get it to work, maybe now it's better. I never understood people who use FEBE, all you have to do is a *.zip/rar of your profile folder. The problem with FF extensions is that many of them conflict with each other, have you tested them yourself?
"McAfee SiteAdvisor 2.2:
Firefox may fail to open after installing or updating the SiteAdvisor extension, which also may be installed as part of a McAfee software suite. This SiteAdvisor support article describes the problem as a conflict between SiteAdvisor and automatic proxy configuration scripts in Firefox.
McAfee SiteAdvisor 2.3:
Causes Firefox to crash with an error in Jar50.dll after installing or updating the SiteAdvisor extension or McAfee component."
The point about FEBE is, that you can very easily configure quite different extensions for quite different tasks quite easily. So you can turn FF in a lightning fast machine without any extensions - or just security extensions - to browse the web and restart with a different set of extensions once you decide to do something.
If you're only interested in securing your extensions & themes, backing up your profile folder will do - if you know where to find it - otherwise you should give
Mr. Tech Toolkit (formerly Local Install)
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/421
a try. You can set custom folders for install and backup and if you point those to your data partition, they will be backed up with your daily routine...
Hi
Actually MediaPlayerConnectivity is partially related to security. VDH is not, but i still very useful.
"McAfee SiteAdvisor is one of the Mozilla "problematic extensions". Cool thanks for the info. Though the list are options, I'm not saying you should install every single one.
"I never understood people who use FEBE, all you have to do is a *.zip/rar of your profile folder." I realise, that but FEBE is easier to use and has scheduling.
"have you tested them yourself?" Yes, but not in every combination (like I haven't used all of them at the same time).
Thanks very much for your input, it's appreciated
Have a look at their list of "problematic extensions". When you have a lot and/or some old extensions, its a precious url:

Hi
Thanks for the link.
Just came across this thread with "McAfee SiteAdvisor Complaints", you might want to have a look:

Why don't you turn your list into an Article that would be useful for our visitors? Some brief info. about what each does, why you might want to run a particular addon, etc, you know the sort of thing. You might even get some help with it from the other editords
Hi
Well I'll start on it but currently I'm a bit busy, so it could take a while.
Thanks
Sorry for doing this, but it's for security. For all people who use Opera there are scripts which acts exactly like "Ad Block Plus" and "No Script".
"Opera Ad Block" - http://www.fanboy.co.nz/adblock/opera/
"No Script" - huh, I forgot, it's somewhere in Opera forum.
