Finds of the Week - Free Clip Art Edition
Finds of the Week are usually interesting things I've stumbled across recently.
This week I was thinking of cards (all sorts of holidays are right around the corner) and clip art, so I rummaged through my bookmarks to come up with a small list of carefully chosen sites I've collected over time.
I've added licensing and/or terms of use for each site. Anything in quotes is copied directly from the site.
WP Clipart
"WPClipart is an ever-growing collection of artwork for schoolkids and others that is free of copyright concerns as well as safe from inappropriate images. Use in school research and reports is my main focus when creating, or finding and editing -- but there are photos and clips here that work great for commercial uses, book illustrations, office presentations, and some just for fun..."
All the images here are Public Domain.
There are 35,516 (and growing) unique images, most in multiple formats.
Artvex
Over 10,000 original free clipart images - I like the icon section in particular.
"Terms of Use: Permission is granted for limited non-profit personal use of up to fifteen (15) images from all categories.
Moreover, credit is due on all published works.
All commercial or institutional use requires licensing.
Redistribution of any image found at this web site (artvex.com) in any format is strictly prohibited."
Clip Art Pal
This site doesn't have the huge amount of clip art that some other sites do, but the clip art here is well done. Don't be fooled by the handful of categories, there are sub-categories that have a goodly amount of images.
"These Public Domain images can be downloaded and used for personal and commercial projects."
Open Clip Art Library
High quality clip art in the public domain unless noted otherwise.
Nice browsing categories with 34335+ images.
"This project aims to create an archive of clip art that can be used for free for any use."
Martha Stewart Clip Art
More than 100 archived clip-art-craft templates.
"Personal use only, not for commercial use."
If that's not enough you can search the site with the term "clip art" (minus quotes) for more.
Clkr
Online royalty free public domain clip art.
The Terms of Use are that "....clip art from the site not be used in derogatory, humiliating or condescending towards any person, group of people, associations, organizations or corporations.
Expressing hate towards any one or group.
Porn or advertises sexual activities even if it was legal in your state or country.
Violating any US laws."
You can find the whole document here.

Great stuff, Rhiannon; thanks for your work.
I like how these sites invariably lead to other, similar sites -- as well as to provoke ideas for us to create our own image art (or to mash-up pieces/parts of imgs we find ...)
Thanks again -

@jerry;
I'm happy you like them. I do my best to provide interesting sites and images. :-)
@NetPotion; Most image sites have licenses of one kind or another.
Martha Stewart has usage on the clip art templates themselves, not anywhere else on the site that I know of. When you download clip art, you'll find this in the lower left corner:
"Personal use only, not for commercial use." Subscriptions are to various print publications, mostly magazines.
I read Artvex as being for personal use as long as it's not for profit - "limited non-profit personal use". Anyone uploading images is bound by similar Terms of Use, the FAQ has more details.
Frequently asked questions - vector clip art online, royalty free & public domain
Not many sites allow images to be used commercially - the only ones I know of are WP Clipart, Clip Art Pal, and Open Clip Art Library.
There may be more, but several lead to runaround links (page links to a page of links which leads to a page of links) that it's more than I want to do. :-)
Artvex has terms that make their clip art free, but only for certain not-for-profit purposes, and only with credit given. That's not really free (as in 'free beer' - IMHO.)

Not sure what the terms are for Martha Stewart Clip Art - I couldn't find them. I did see that they are also selling subscriptions though.

Unfamiliar with Clkr - but it would seem that anyone can upload any image there. That could lead to getting a nasty letter somewhere down the line if content is shared illegally.
I trust WP Clipart and Open Clipart Library. These others I would have to take a pass on for the reasons stated above.
Good post for free images if someone wanted to use the art for non-comm purposes though.
