Every Day at Giveawayoftheday.com
After poking around and doing a search of Gizmo's truly best-ever site, it seems no one had posted www.giveawayoftheday.com as a source for retail software that is given away free, by the developers for a 24 hr period. (There may be a reason...like, um, Gizmo doesn't think it's an appropriate listing for Gizmo's "Best ...". and I get that if this is deleted, it's for a reason.) There is a game section (I'm not a gamer, so have no opinion of that section) and there's been talk in the blog and the forum about interest in getting a Mac section started.
There are some inconveniences. Only one software app. offered every 24 hrs and it must be downloaded, installed, and activated before the next offer appears (which seems to be 3 a.m. Eastern). The rating system is pretty random and I skip comments that aren't marked as "useful", if I read them at all. It's a site that's worth a 30 second peak to see if they have something I need and often I just find stuff I'm curious enough to try, just for fun.
This is a list of some of the recent offerings I've grabbed and kept or just enjoyed testing. I've seen with retail prices up to $100 dollars...
Checkout this site http://www.WhichWebsite.com they give away free iPhone promo codes that you can redeem in the Apple App Store and download games, etc....
While their recent softwares all seem to be OK (malware wise), they have a freeware library that contains some links to adware/spyware products (which appear to be past giveaways).
I think the red from McAfee is deserved. It does not say all that is there is bad, but some downloads are (and that is true).
They do have some good products on occasion, but most days offer products for which there are better freeware versions available.
On weekends they give away games and I have a few of those.
the mcAfee SA database is so out of date (no updates foir many months) it is as good as useless. WOT is much more reliable.
interesting site - stuff I never seen before
Todays giveaway is AnVir Task Manager Standard, if you miss the giveaway, there's a free version, it has a delayed start up facility that I have long thought would be useful so I grabbed it.
Not as good as I hoped it'd be - http://www.anvir.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=47&p=119#p119
Hi
For those who are interested, currently AnVir Task Manager is available.
http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/
As gimm says, Give Away Of The Day (GAOTD) is a unique site offering a daily basis commercial software for free as "time-limited" offers, meaning you have to go through the installation/activation process within the site's 24-hour time window (you can do this on as many computers as you want). The advantage for developers is publicity and user feedback. Regular site visitors can grab some little known commercial gems (eg Image Mender: http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/image-mender/).
Although the quality of the software varies a lot, occasionally (perhaps once a week . . . ?) there are top class giveaways, some of which may fit ones own particular needs. Scanning user comments that have received a lot of "thumbs up" votes from other GAOTD readers can be useful to help gauge whether a particular product may be of interest. Many giveaways come around several times and one can also use the "Publisher" link at the top of the page to access feedback on past offerings.
It's worth bearing in mind that you cannot normally (though there are exceptions) reinstall the programme: so in practice, you can only keep using the software for "free" until you next rebuild your system. Furthermore, most of the software houses don't allow updates or provide support for GAOTD offerings. These aspects may affect the desirability of certain types of giveaway (eg backup utilities).
I find the excellent, though slightly bulky, Returnil virtual system (http://www.returnilvirtualsystem.com/index_files/rvspersonal.htm) invaluable for trying out unfamiliar software, including GAOTD offerings. Just activate and install the downloaded product while Returnil is switched on. Rebooting after the test drive will restore your system disk to baseline. Then if you decide you really do want to keep the GAOTD, you can repeat the activation/installation process for real, with Returnil switched off.
----------------------------
PS Don't be unduly put off by McAffeee Site Advisor's "red" tag -- I'm pretty sure GAOTD doesn't deliberately distribute any malware!
McAfee SA is not the product/service it once was - Fx users would be better off with WOT available from Moz AddOn site.
Thanks for the tip re ReturNilVirtualsSystem too
Hey, thanks for the WOT Firefox extension tip -- seems like a handy replacement for SiteAdvisor
(at least when Googling)
Of course it's OK and it's welcome.
