EDraw at Giveawayoftheday.com (and a question)
Giveaway of the Day has EDraw today (Tuesday) ... You don't want to miss this--very cool!
Question for the pros: Is it possible to "capture" the registration info registry key?
GAOTD requires that a person install the software ON THE DAY that it's offered. This is fair--it's free so I can't complain... But I occasionally have to rebuild my system or an overly ambitious registry cleaner will wipe out the wrong reg data. I know, I know... This is what *backups" are for... What I'm asking is, is it possible to backup ONLY the bits of data that tell one of these GAOTD applications that it's "okay" to reinstall at a later date.... Or maybe this is not ethical? Thoughts? Thanks. -sk

well, though i am no programmer,i ve been thinking abt the question asked by Gizmo. Today's GAOTD is advanced registry doctor pro which i downloaded and activated as prescribed. however i was able to retrieve the key from the registry and install the same on another pc which, btw, is not connected to internet. no problems at all.may be it was possible since this particular giveaway had an installer and a separate activation file. I dont know.
Incase u wanna try... check out the registry key..
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Elcor Software\GAOTD\ARD PRO
after u have installed and activated the product.
(reply to Peter) I suspect you are right. I've noticed that the apps from GAOTD always "check-in" with the GAOTD mothership before installing. If you're not on-line, you can't install at all... I'm not a developer, but I guess there must be some type of "wrapper" that the applications are put in. Like I can't imagine that the EDraw developers (and all the others) rewrote their sourcecode just for the GAOTD folks... Oh well, like I said before: Can't complain... It's a pretty cool opportunity to use the software even if you don't really "own" it...

Ignoring the ethics & legality, I don't think what you want to do is very easy in practice. Your best bet (I think) is to backup the registry, and then restore it, but this would cause a rebuilt system more problems than solutions.
Software validation can be very tricky: if the program uses some internal validation method it may be possible to fool it, but if it requires an internet connection to the provider's site .... you've virtually no chance.
