Edit RAW Image Files Quickly With This Program

While JPG-format image files may be perfectly adequate for most digital photography purposes, professionals tend to use a so-called raw image format instead.  These files are typically much larger than JPEG files (40 MB per image is not uncommon), but the lack of compression and the addition of copious metadata means that it's the ideal format if you need to do some serious retouching.

Not all cameras can shoot in raw format (and few phone-based ones can).  But if you're fortunate enough to have a source of RAW files and you want to explore them, you'll need a program that can handle them.

I am therefore grateful to a reader of Gizmo's site who calls himself "Mr Fantastic" for pointing me at a great program called Fast Raw Viewer.  While some programs can take ages to open a raw image file for display, Fast Raw Viewer typically takes less than a second.  And once the file's open there's a whole host of display and editing options available to you, in order to access the level of detail that would otherwise be missing from the JPG version.

The program is at http://www.fastrawviewer.com/ if you want to try it for yourself.  It's an 11 MB download, available in both 32- and 64-bit flavours, and is malware-free according to VirusTotal and Web of Trust.  It's currently listed as being in beta, at version 0.9.2, and appears to be free to download and use.  This may not always be the case, so grab a copy while you can.

Thanks for sharing
it's fast on my old PC, the feature is really basic, isn't as many as other free RAW Editors such as RawTherapee or LightZone
Still really nice as a RAW viewer though
