This DTP Program for Windows Is Free

For those times when layout and presentation is more important than the text, you need a desktop publishing program (DTP) rather than a word processor.  For example, when producing business cards, advertising flyers, brochures, letterheads and so on.

All of which are well within the remit of a great Windows DTP suite called Spring Publisher.

Although the program costs money, there's also a free version available.  It lacks the ability to print out your creations in ultra-high-resolution mode, and the ability to download and install new templates, but it's still a perfectly usable solution and is  a great intro to DTP if you've never tried things like Quark, InDesign, Microsoft Publisher and so on.

You can get Spring Publisher from www.springpublisher.com.  It needs Windows XP or above, and is a surprisingly tiny 2 MB download.

I guess I won't bother then.

I have printed and heat bound books and I think that this is a good program given its small footprint.
Colin J.. works for me...

Does this free version allow you to save your work in a format that can be opened and printed by others who don't have this software installed?

Also, your review states "It lacks the ability to... download and install new templates", but on the link you provide, the features list includes "3. Allows you to download high quality templates from the template store." So which is it? It does or it doesn't?

180dpi should be quite enough for normal use. maybe you should print it out to see the result . even some paid software have not that resolution.

dudes, the output resolution of the free version is 96/180 dpi -- this is not "perfectly usable". this is absolutely crippling, like putting watermarks on the output -- gizmo got sc4mmed on this one

PagePlus Starter Edition (free) is a better alternative, when compared to Spring Publisher Free.

Why not use the full-featured, always free, and open-source alternative, Scribus? http://www.scribus.net

by Anupam on 9. June 2011 - 9:14  (73543)

Scribus is good, but its always good to know about other alternatives too :). That's what Gizmo's Freeware is all about.

by Little Stain on 9. June 2011 - 12:35  (73550)

Scribus is my number 1 choice, when it comes to DTP.
In fact, i prefer it to Quark and/or Indesign.

Because of it's open source nature it can be used commercialy as well if one would want to.

Ofcourse alternatives are nice, but is an alternative with severe limitations a real alternative?

by Anupam on 9. June 2011 - 12:47  (73552)

It might not be a real alternative, or a better alternative, but it is an alternative, isn't it? :)
And that is why this article has been shared. Someone may find it useful, or someone's small task may be achieved by Spring Publisher, rather than using a full-fledged DTP like Scribus.

Its of course an individual choice of which programs one likes to use.

I agree that Scribus, or PagePlus Free which have been around for years will be a better alternative :).
