Download Microsoft SharePoint Designer Free (no time limit)

SharePoint Designer is Microsoft's WYSIWYG HTML editor and general web design program that replaced Microsoft FrontPage.

When SharePoint Designer replaced Front Page, Microsoft changed the HTML rendering engine to one that is more standards compliant - making it easier to design web pages that are readable in most browsers.

You can get more information and the download link at the SharePoint Designer home page.
There's also a Q and A from Microsoft, a letter to customers, and links to quite a bit of training material - web casts, demos, including a six part beginners series for beginners, sample pages and templates for use with SharePoint Designer.

Although they share a similar name (SharePoint), this is not the SharePoint Server program.
On a similar note, if you decide to download SharePoint Designer, you may also want to download Service Pack 1 (SP1) for SharePoint Designer 2007 (link below)

Download requirements:
You'll need a Microsoft Passport, MSN Hotmail, MSN Messenger, or Windows Live ID account to download SharePoint Designer if you don't already have one. Registration is free if you decide to create an account.

SharePoint Designer Service Pack 1 (SP1)

Editors note:  SharePoint is not really a replacement for FrontPage as described above. It is a tool specifically designed for the creation and maintenance of SharePoint based sites.   - Gizmo

Frank here again,

I have no choice but to reload my system from scratch due to the damage done by Sharepoint.

Thanks to Microsoft for consuming yet another day of my life because of their poor software design. No wonder their giving this turkey away!

Is that anything serious about this sharepoint designer please tell me clearly whether it is useful for download are not

Installing and then uninstalling this program has done enormous damage to my system that I am still recovering from.

Given the comments above unless you need "Sharepoint" in particular beware.

Frank

Steve here again,
Firstly, thanks, Rhiannon for the download link. And thanks Ted for you reply. I was eventually able to register for the download and install SPD. It didn't take long after that, that I figured out the thing is proprietary to Microsoft's stuff, and can't be used like Frontpage was...

Just now I uninstalled it and it screwed up my Office 2007 installation. (Can't open Word, Excel, Outlook) Argh! Now I'll have to unpack my old install CD and fix Office 2007 .... Oh well--live and learn :-)

I'm afraid Anonymous #2 and 4 are right, Gizmo. You have overstated the case for this software. It is intended to be used in an IT environment to create Sharepoint collaboration sites and not as a general website designer. In fact, they confirm this in their Open Letter by offering Expressions Web as a free upgrade to this product's currently licensed users.

Yes I agree, the description is incorrect.

I really should have picked this up when moderating this item. You have my apologies.

Since the demise of FrontPage I must admit I've lost track of the names and features of Microsoft's various HTML editing offerings.

Gizmo

I think we have to admit that sometimes we do make mistakes, and I regret that our description of this product's intended use was a little misleading. Nevertheless, it is a perfectly valid product offer and some people will find a use for it. I cannot over-emphasize that this is a community-based site and we rely on user-feedback to challenge us to be more precise.

Before even trying any "replacements", 2 questions:

- Can I open my FronfPage projects with this ?
- Do the "design time includes" of FrontPage work when (if possible, Q #1) opening my projects ????

I am not going to consider any replacements that requires me to rewrite plenty of code/pages.

While Sharepoint Designer is a WYSIWYG web development program and could be considered a replacement for Frontpage it is really intended for developing Sharepoint sites. The real Frontpage replacement is Microsoft Expression Web.

That's the program that is being sold a the replacement for Frontpage.

I figured there would be some discussion about that point.
I've seen both things posted in many areas all over the web.

I've always liked Front Page.
I like SharePoint Designer so far, its enough like Front Page that I have no trouble finding things.
As soon as Microsoft makes Expression Web free for download I'll grab it, too. =)

Or I could go back to school and get a student ID and buy it cheap....but wait, that would be more expensive than buying the program.

SharePoint was never intended nor can it be used as a "replacement for Front Page". That is a very misleading statement or suggestion. Want a free replacement for Front Page? get Kompozer Google komposer download In fact Microsoft states EXPLICITY that SharePoint is not a replacement for Front Page QUOTE

Use Windows SharePoint Services when you want to collaborate with colleagues on common projects and documents. When you want to create a more traditional Web site by using a product that provides more technically advanced functionality, use FrontPage. FrontPage can support some limited collaboration as well.

I have no trouble logging in the download this. But the description of SharePoint Designer leaves me scratching my head: What is this program even for? Obviously, it's for creating websites; but apparently for something far more complex than a typical website.
I've read some of the help files on the website and elsewhere (Wikipedia), but am still in the dark. Can anyone offer an easy to understand answer? Thanks!

First of all, thanks a lot Rhiannon. You are a real digger on the Internet. Really good job.

Yesterday, using Firefox 3.0.8 together with NoScript add-on and with a valid MS Passport ID, I had no problem to sign in and download. You may need to check your ActiveX controls or Noscript settings in case you have it.

ekadim

Wouldn't work with Firefox but managed to download with IE8 - there's a surprise!

I'm not having any problem logging in or starting the download again.

Have you guys been unable to download this?
I can sign in, but then the next page never loads.... Which is actually somewhat ironic--given that it's probably the same software MS used to build the page that won't load! -steve

to kunke1321... Hi Steve

I've struck similar problems from time to time where downloading/installation doesn't go to plan and in all cases it's been something awry in my machine rather than the downloaded program. How do I know?.... I drag out the laptop or use another PC and the plan downloads/installs/works fine. Sometimes it's a missing file, missing support or wrong service pack, faulty file download or I didn't allow the installation to complete before I interrupted by doing something before it did.
There may be a time when these downloads are incorrectly setup and I did strike one about nine months ago that was. If you have a problem (anytime) with download and installing a program, check with the author site first... it's their lifeblood business and they don't cause their users any inconvenience deliberately as that will equate to lost business and income.
Regards
Ted
