Discover How Things Work
HowStuffWorks, a wholly owned subsidiary of Discovery Communications, works to demystify the world in a way that people can understand.
The amount of information on this site left me stunned and amazed. The range of subjects on the main page alone were enough to keep me clicking away for quite a long time.
Although HowStuffWorks covers almost everything, the main topics are organized into these categories: Home, Adventure, Animals, Auto, Communication, Computer, Electronics, Entertainment, Food, Geography, Health, History, Home & Garden, Money, People, and Science.
The Maps section is.....well, extensive would be a good word for it. There are the usual maps of the continents, and then there are the other maps. Maps about time zones, maps about religions, maps about cellular communication, land use, world employment, newspaper circulation, deserts, food and nutrition, and even more maps about more things.
The home page has some interesting daily features: Quote of the Day, Poll of the Day, and Trivia of the Day, along with a few static features like the Video and Random sections.
Some of the videos I viewed had ads before you get to the actual video. Many videos are two to five minutes long, and, being The Discovery Channel and its offshoots, are done well.
Not only do the videos have ads, there are quite a few ads on the site, both the kind that move and the kind that don't.
There are several blogs on the site that cover a variety of areas - Stuff You Should Know, Stuff You Missed in History Class, science, tech, high speed, brain stuff and one called Keep Asking.
There are also several newsletters on different topics that you can subscribe to, all that's required is an email address.

howstuffworks is amazing. I don't go there unless I'm ready to lose at least a few hours. = )
Get Adblock Plus for Firefox and the EasyList subscribtion if you're bothered by the ads. It will then automatically block the ads and remove the gaps.
Thanks for the comment. I use Firefox with Adblock Plus and subscribe to EasyList. For myself, Firefox is the browser I've used for years.
I install other browsers for viewing and testing misc. stuff and to see how they operate and what features they have.
Sometimes downloads and some sites only work in IE.
Since I'm evaluating sites to pass the information to others, I view the sites in a browser with no adblocking (and Flash and Java enabled) so I can see everything that's there.
I've known about HowStuffWorks for several years, and the site still never fails to amaze me... :D
Thanks for another great "treat"! I've seen the show of the same name on the Science Channel, but wasn't aware of this website. Your hard work in finding, researching, and then presenting these to us is very much appreciated. I've explored almost all of them to the point of spending way too much time on a lot of them, but it's always a fun learning experience. Keep "signing on"!
This is a site I have known for many years... its quite a good site.
