Copy files with auto-rename

I have a bunch of Microsoft Word documents that are scattered amont different folders on my hard drive.  I want to put them all into the same folder.  That would be easy to do, if all the documents had unique names -- but they don't.  I'd like to get some utility that will automatically rename the file I'm copying, if a file already exists with that same name.  So, for example, if I have a file called letter.doc, and I'm trying to paste another Word document called letter.doc into that same folder, I want the new file to be called letter001.doc.

Any suggestions about this?

Thanks!

I just came across this post while I was looking for a solution to the same problem.

For example, Photoshop names all documents "Untitled-1.psd" by default. When you're in a hurry, you end up with a lot of files named "Untitled-1.psd" scattered about many folders throughout your computer. Then you go to move all *.psd files into one folder and you're stuck having to manually rename them before the move.

Apparently no one has found a solution since this first person asked the original question.

Like the first user, I know how to use batch rename programs, but then you still have to search through all your files and manually decide which ones you want renamed.

Kent,

Thanks for the tip. I read the description of the program, but I'm not sure that it can do what I want it to do.

I don't want to rename a lot of files -- I just want to rename the files that have duplicate names. So if I'm attempting a cut-and-paste operation with 20 files from a source folder, and only one of the files has a duplicate name with a pre-existing file in the destination folder, I just want that ONE duplicate file renamed. Does that make sense? It's a little hard to describe clearly.

Maybe there's no such utility -- I don't know.
