Connect to Any PC Remotely with Team Viewer

One of the most irritating decisions that Microsoft ever made was to split Windows Vista, and its successors, into a multitude of different versions.  With XP it was simple - Home and Professional.  The Home version did everything that home users needed, while the professional version added the stuff that professionals needed, such as the ability to join a centrally-managed domain rather than a peer-to-peer workgroup.

But with Vista it changed.  We got Home, Home Premium, Start, Professional, Enterprise, Professional N, Ultimate, and more.  Lots of added confusion, with no benefit whatsoever for customers.  And no longer do all home-based users get all the features that they need.  Even the backup and encryption features, surely of use to everyone, aren't made available to all.

One of the most irritating features of Home Premium, probably the most widely used version of Windows 7 and Vista, is that you can't connect to it via Windows Remote Desktop.  So if you're a technical wiz and you need to sort out a problem on grandma's PC via a remote internet connection, you can't.  Well, not unless you can persuade grandma that she's actually a professional user and needs a Pro version of Windows.

But rather than paying Microsoft for a Windows upgrade if you need to connect remotely to a home version, there's a much cheaper alternative.  Free, in fact.  Team Viewer is an excellent remote control product that allows you to connect to any PC over the internet and drive it as if you were sitting in front of it.  Assuming you have the permission of its owner, of course.  The software, available from www.teamviewer.com, is said to have been downloaded more than 60 million times so far, and is widely praised by a number of users of Tech Support Alert.  It's totally free for non-commercial use. Another handy feature is that your grandma won't need admin privileges to run the client application, so making the connection to her PC is going to be pretty easy.

Give Team Viewer a try.  It runs on Windows XP and above, Mac and Linux, and the download of the full version (to connect to or from a PC) is only 3 MB. There's even an inbuilt demo.  Run the software, enter an id of 12345 for the computer to connect to, and you'll find yourself connected to one of TeamViewer's test PCs where you can run basic apps like Notepad, Wordpad and Paint.

Team Viewer, by far, is the easiest, most versatile way to remotely connect to another computer or smartphone, that I have ever found. I still smile every time I dive into my computer, with nothing but an iPhone.
A good business plan combined with an awesome, very professional service has rocketed Team Viewer to the top of 'remote desktop' services.
How could it get any better? Well, how does FREE sound? That's right! This pro-level service is free for everybody to use. You are free to play and learn all you want, as long as you don't charge anyone for your help. If you charge for your services, you'll be required to pay for an upgraded professional account.
It's a win-win for anybody thinking of starting a business in remote computer administration and, that's just one of the many uses for Team Viewer.
When you weigh in the fact that it works for every operating system and, that you receive a professional grade service, for FREE. I give it 8/10 stars.

I also discovered there is a client for Android for when you are on the go. That makes Team Viewer look like one of the best options for taking control of your machines remotely. Plus I must say I have been impressed with it's performance...

I use TeamViewer extensively, replacing LogMeIn for all computers EXCEPT servers. The graphics on TeamViewer are MUCH better, but LogMeIn works on servers. Also, LogMeIn lets you easily discover IP addresses of attached machines in case you need to connect vian RDP on them.

Its Nice

Have been using this outstanding utility to fix computers a continent away since v4. Not only that, but TeamViewer makes sending large files through the VPN created a snap. There's a version for Linux, even one for Macs (are we allowed to say that here?). Five Stars (out of five). Sadly, it doesn't do laundry; perhaps v7...

I tried a few other remote programs in the past to help family and friends.
But once I tried TeamViewer I haven't looked back.
Does all that I need and then some.
NO !! Complaints on this end.
Great Job "Team" TeamViewer

by Drongo on 18. December 2010 - 12:24  (62890)

I've tried it and it is fantastic but it said I'm a business and kicks me off after a few minutes. So...I decided to buy it to overcome this problem and immediately noticed that if you have to buy it, it's VERY expensive.

This was when away from home, connecting via my mother's AT&T broadband in the USA and working on my wife's computer which is connected to Telstra broadband in Australia. Neither computer was set up as a server, and both were home connections, so no idea why TeamViewer identified me as a business.

Outstanding software!

Its also a great way to check up on the 12 year olds computer to make sure the child protection software is doing its job. He knows if I log on so its not really spying.....is it? :)

Has anyone used teamviewer as a terminal server? That is, have multiple, concurrent sessions running at the same time. I need a few people to connect to a machine at once and edit a few word and excel documents. Anyone got any ideas?

Hello to all , wish to know.
Is Team Viewer secured ?????

by MidnightCowboy on 11. November 2010 - 16:22  (61041)

No Windows environment is secure, it's how you use it that makes it so.
Allowing remote access between machines adds another possible layer of vulnerability but the Team Viewer devs considered this when coding the program. Like any other software, if you read the help files first and set it up according to your specific needs then you shouldn't be any less secure with this than anything else.

Tried out the "Teamviewer Portable" version for USB/CD and it works great, does not install any files and has support for dual monitors, file transfers, etc. Only requires both computers to download and run teamviewer portable. Then the computer that needs help displays a code and password which are then entered in the remote computer to connect, easy.

"For mobile use: TeamViewer Portable
TeamViewer Portable can be run directly from a USB stick or a CD - the perfect solution if you are on the road."

looking for a program like team viewer but this is not it. would not stay connected for longer than a few minutes. perhaps the issue is XP to vista computers (shouldn't be a problem). looked promising in it's simplicity but not in it's reliability.

by Harold_Callahan (not verified) on 28. July 2010 - 16:51  (55052)

Do the version of TeamViewer that you are using (the free one) include the web connector?

The Web Connector allows the user to install the server/client via a html link.

Unfortunately the folks at TeamViewer follow a similar licensing strategy as Microsoft. I have a home server running Windows 2003 Enterprise Server on my home network. Why? Because I got it for free at a a MS function.

I load up all of my utilities, etc. on this server because I have it exposed to the Internet. I can RDP into my server and have access to every utility and application I work with, anywhere in the world.

I would love to be able to RDP into my server and use TeamViewer to help out any other relative, friend, etc. I can't.

TeamViewer will not load on server operating systems due to their licensing choices. They assume if you are running a server, then you must be running a commercial business.

Hi,

No Doubt TeamViewer is a great app, but leaves a lot of entries in registry....

by Les M (not verified) on 25. July 2010 - 0:32  (54887)

If you use team viewer portable.
Problem solved.

by MidnightCowboy on 16. July 2010 - 15:39  (54388)

I thought this was what the registry was for? I looked in mine yesterday and I got all sorts of stuff in there :)

by Anupam on 16. July 2010 - 13:54  (54385)

You had mentioned a commercial software in your comment. That has been deleted. Please do not mention commercial software, we are a freeware-based site.

I recall recommending this software here over a year ago, and Gizmo did include it in the next newsletter along with quotes from my email.. I had mixed feelings of pride, as well as bewilderment that this great product really had not been reported on up to that time. Ah, how I miss the newsletter. Yeah, this is great software. Auto bypass any firewalls on both ends. I have never figured out how they can afford to give it away for free, when the pay version does basically everything you might need to do.. Cheers!!

Just read Michael Lasky's article in Windows Secrets," Run Windows on iPad using remote-computing apps " anyone ( perhaps Inga if she is reading ) know if TeamViewer would work on iPad.

by Matt S (not verified) on 3. November 2010 - 11:10  (60708)

Yes, there is an ipod/ipad version of Teamviewer available from the App store

We have a licensed version of Teamviewer at work and I use it extensively on a daily basis to connect to the numerous computers that I administer in our factory. These computers do not have internet access and I have configured each PC with a fixed IP address and keep a list of all of the computers IP address. Teamviewer can be set to start automatically when windows start, use local LAN use only [for non internet PC's] and a fixed password. So no matter where I am at work I can connect to each an every computer including back to my desk using Teamviewer. This is so handy, it saves me a lot of shoe leather. I can respond to more than one issue at a time by effectively being able to get to any PC from any where. I got our IT department to installe Teamviewer on our remote access computer so I can login to that computer from home, run Teamviewer and access all of our work PCs remotely and securely. How good is that! Certainly saved me getting call in's at night and weekends. Naturally I use it at home to help family and friends. Love it.
