computer lockups and/or programs not responding

Has anyone experienced any computer lockups recently or programs not responding?

I've not installed or uninstalled anything since I installed xpsp3.  I've ran virus scans and antispyware scans to which I found nothing wrong.  I've ran the recovery console and found no errors.

Yesterday afternoon, I grew so frustrated that I finally formatted my hard drive, hoping that it would cure my problem.  It didn't.  Everything ran fine until I installed sp3.

My configuration utility shows I am running only 2 programs at boot...my avg antivirus and a reminder program.  I've got 4gb ram with a 320hdd w/290gb free.  I have a pentium D processor on my dell dimension e520 and I replaced the oem 300w power supply about a year ago with a 400w power supply to ensure I had enough power to substantiate running 2 external drives, 256mb video card, and sometimes a 3rd external hard drive.

I've ran hard drive tests through dell's diagnostics and found no problems too.

I had that issue and unloaded SP3, it was giving AMD processors problems in the same way I believe. I haven't heard if that issue was resolved, so haven't loaded it on. I am not sure if I want to to be honest as I am short on hard drive space.

I've narrowed the problem down to last week's critical windows updates. I had no problems prior to installed last week's critical updates and had noticed my system had somewhat increased in performance since installing sp3.

You didn't tell me anything useful. I had been using sp3 for nearly 6 months and never had any problems with it.

It will be an issue with SP3. When I installed it I couldnt boot into Windows at all but thankfully I dual booted Linux so I could go into that to look up what the issue was and replace the offending .dll file with the original from the Windows CD allowing me to boot back into Windows and uninstall SP3. As long as you update all the critical patches every Patch Tuesday then you can live without Service Pack 3 for now and your computer should run fine. You can uninstall SP3 from add/remove programs in the control panel, you dont need to do a full format and reinstall. SP3 has been notoriously rife with issues and problems since it was released so I will just wait a bit longer until I try to install it again.
