Comprehensive History and Review of Operating Systems
The Operating System Documentation Project is a huge resource for information on, and the history of, many different Operating Systems. Focusing on independent information on many operating systems and developers, there's a lot to explore on the site.
Highlights of the site are the reviews of several of the operating systems, articles about the developers, and the hundreds of screen shots of various operating systems that include both the GUI (Graphical User Interface) and the Command Line.
The amount of operating systems currently stands at 573 for various operating systems. Linux, in its own category, is listed at 462 distributions.
The site is updated on a regular basis, with the last update in June 2009, and is available in English, Deutsch and Français.
Windows 7 isn't included in the reviews, likely because it hasn't hit the shelves yet.

Thanks for your work on GAOTD. For the consumer, it is a bit of a lucky dip, but that adds to the interest.
However, the OS reviews seem to have been written by Borat. Maybe his countrymen will appreciate & "make benefit" of the fractured English offered.
More seriously, I find that many informal writers on Linux, in particular, are unusually poor at technical explanations. This comment does not apply to pros such as yourself and the writers of such newsletters as Windows Secrets and most paper-back magazines. So fractured English can only make explanations even less clear.
However, in the present case of the OSes, the writer's evident use of English as a second language does risk major misunderstandings by the English -speaking reader.
To avoid loss of credibility to GAOTD, such sites are best avoided, in my view.

Too much Inglis as she is spuk
Nice for history, but if you're looking for a comparison of new Linux distributions, Wikipedia is better.
Wikipedia is good for newer Linux info.
DistroWatch.com is a good place to keep an eye on the rest.
Ouch! This hurts my brain.
There is a good list of operating systems, but it is written in broken English.
In reading it you have to insert words or change the words in your head to make it legible.
I think the person who does the site has a different native language than English. I run into a lot of sites like that. I do my best to fill in and rearrange so I get the point. I admire the people who have learned whatever English they have. Its a hard language to learn.
Amen to that. I'm a native English speaker. I studied (to marginal effect) Spanish in high school and then took a semester of Russian in college. Spanish is pretty simple, but trying to learn Russian gave me a feeling for what English must be like.
No - you just need to tilt your head to one side and it looks fine :-)
Very good information - thanks
