Onlinecrosswords.net is one of the better crossword puzzle sites I've seen.
Its laid out well, not too many ads, and has some features that are a real plus.

There are 7 new puzzles every day. You can play online, or use the printable versions of the puzzles.
There's a word directory for crossword puzzles, and an online crossword help area.
Playing online is easy - you click on the grid where you want to enter a word and start typing.
If you like to challenge yourself, there's an online timer.
I didn't find the size of the puzzle or text to be a problem, but if you like them smaller or larger, you can always enlarge them through your browser settings, for both online and printed puzzles.

The site provides free crossword solutions for puzzles from the L.A. Times and Washington Post daily.
There are some ads on the site, as usual, nothing very annoying or intrusive.
There is a page featuring crossword books.
There were three when I visited, no ad, and clicking on the covers redirected me to amazon.com.

You might want to bookmark crosstips.org as well.
Its an easy site that does one thing, help you solve crossword puzzles.
I found the solutions on this site to be more to my preference, though the other site is no slouch in that area.
No ads on this site. Easy on the eyes, easy to use.
