Big List Of Portable Applications

Here's a large list of Portable Applications nicely grouped into categories

Webtalk has a quite large list of some of the more useful and well known programs that have been turned into portable applications.

The list is broken down into categories making it easier to find specific applications.
Music and Video, Utilities, Operating Systems, Games and Office applications are some of the categories you'll find there.

For more information on Portable Apps (as in what are those things anyway?) check out  A Guide To Portable Apps  written by one of our site editors, and for even more portable applications for you to peruse and play with there's the Best Free Portable Applications article here at Gizmo's Freeware.

There is no such thing as a comprehensive list of portable freeware. But Portablefreeware [DOT] com is the only one I trust.

Thanks!

If you want a comprehensive list, IHMO it's much better to go to www [DOT] portablefreeware [DOT] com

If you are looking for a more complete list, there's one here:

A good list, but most of these are on the all in one Lupo Pen Suite
http://www.lupopensuite.com/suitefull.htm
which I find great.

Also, one of my favourite apps that always seems to get missed off these lists/suites is Deep Burner portable;

DeepBurner looks interesting, but it writes a bit of stuff to the registry:

Should it be considered portable? Probably contentious considering its difficult to find any fully stealth app:

Since stealth allows for some entries, the question is do the DeepBurner entries fall into the allowed category?

For the purpose for this website, "stealth" means when an application is launched, used and terminated properly, it does not leave behind any entries in the registry or filesystem. Certain exceptions are permitted. For example, registry entries that are created/updated by Windows for the application (eg. MRU entries for dialog boxes, DirectX entries for DirectX-based apps), or temp files created in the official "Temp" folders are not taken into consideration.

Based on the comments for it at the site, it seems like it does write to the registry (one of the comments from a user confirms it from the vendor).

But the site article for DeepBurner says the registry entries are not significant. And often they include products on the site that get a "No" for their definition of stealth. For example: Firefox portable, The KM Player (you have to type kmplayer in the search box), VLC, Eraser, Iron, etc. From experience, the FileHippo update checker leaves behind registry entries as well (but I changed some of its settings).

I guess the question is whether DeepBurner writes too many entries or not.

Thanks for the heads up on DeepBurner, I didn't know they put together a portable version. =)

Did you actually read article ? It's the PortableApps [DOT] com list, this is no news (and the list is not even complete).
