The Best Free uTorrent Apps

In a Hurry?
Go to details...  Go straight to the Quick Selection Guide

Introduction
uTorrent is a highly popular BitTorrent program, but of course you probably already know that. Recently uTorrent has introduced a new feature; apps. Although all these are free, I feel I should review them and try to reveal the best one.

Discussion

uBrowseuBrowse is a file search utility to more quickly and easily locate the files you have downloaded with your µTorrent client. Search for torrents or files, both downloading and complete, by torrent name or directory name.

This app is quite helpful/useful for the average uTorrent user, and it's ease of access is commendable. I cannot really see a downside to having this app installed.

uBrowse is ideally used with other uTorrent apps.

WARNING: if you have more than a hundred torrents stored in utorrent, you should not install ubrowse as that will cause utorrent slow down and/or freeze, and you can't uninstall it easily. This app is useless for those who keep lots of torrents. If you really want to test uBrowse, use a portable utorrent verson with small number of torrents.

uMapuMap is a map-based visualizations of where all the peers are that you are connected with around the world. Organize by client type, country of origin or swarm. This means that you can see the location of any of your peers.

The app is extremely easy to use, maybe too easy. Some of you may love this concept, however I dislike the idea that someone downloading the same thing as my can see my exact location (approximately accurate to the street, sometimes even house). However as a Mr X stated, using a VPN (masks your i.p) stops your actual location from appearing on the map. If you know of any good VPN's please comment. TetronimoesuTetris/Tetronimoes. Have you ever sat at your computer bored whilst waiting for your torrent to download? That will no longer happen with Tetronimoes (Was called uTetris).

The developer said Tetronimoes is "Our version of the popular dropping blocks game - something random but fun to pass the time while you're waiting for your downloads to finish."

This is enough said, it's a good little app, however if your internet is good enough to browse whilst downloading then you could find better Tetris games elsewhere.

Virus GuardVirus Guard is a service provided by BitDefender to try and guard your computer against malicious items/software/torrents. The developer's says "Scan from within BitTorrent — avoid wasting resources on a full disk scan". However in reality most anti-virus or anti-spyware software allows to scan certain files or folders.

In theory this is a good idea. But it just didn't do it for me.... Firstly, it hogs resources (takes up around 200,000k of process, even when not scanning). Secondly, I just don't need it, I only download from safe sources and with most Anti-Virus it is very easy to scan it manually. And Finally the one time there was a virus in something I was downloading it did not detect anything.

As previously said Virus Guard just isnt neccesary. Urbane. Tiger pointed out that if you go to "Options->Advanced->Run Program", in "Run this program when torrent finishes" enter the command line to run your AV Scanner (Where the .exe of the scanner is)

Examples

"...\Microsoft Security Client\Antimalware\MpCmdRun.exe -scan %F"
"...\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe /scan -terminate %F"

VLCVLC media player app automatically displays the torrents you’ve downloaded in a list and allows you to play each through the VLC media player with a single click.

The VLC media player plays everything. And it comes with nearly every codec built in so you don't have to continually run updates. It can even play files that have been damaged.

For me this is an amazing app, I know it doesnt take much time to manually start the video, but it is nice to just have it there ready. Unlike the Virus Guard the VLC app takes up barely any - none CPU Usage.

Installation
Install - Each of the apps can be accessed an installed from the utorrent official website (http://www.utorrent.com/get-started/apps) from there you click on the app you want and an install button should appear. Alternatively if you are running uTorrent (Version 3+) then at the bottom of the left column there should be a 'Apps' section, from there, there is a list of installable apps.

Honorable Mentions
Skins - This is a small little app which slightly changes the icons of your uTorrent buttons. Definitely worth trying.

I suggest there's no need for BitDefender's Virus Guard, go to utorrent V3 "Options->Advanced->Run Program", in "Run this program when torrent finishes" enter the command line to run your AV Scanner

Examples

"...\Microsoft Security Client\Antimalware\MpCmdRun.exe -scan %F"
"...\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe /scan -terminate %F"

Why is everyone rabbiting on about VPNs. The PPTP (point to point tunnelling protocol) is used on some VPN services, P2P (peer to peer) is a generic label for file sharing protocols such as BitTorrent, Kazaa, eMule etc. They ain't the same thing.

by Joab on 24. August 2011 - 22:51  (78307)

Thanks for that, I didn't know that you can get it to run a scan like that. I will add it to the article.

We're saying about VPN's masking your i.p meaning you are no longer appearing in your real location on uMap

If you are interested in VPNs then this is the article to look at.

Some of these apps look interesting, especially the VLC app. But nowhere do you give instructions for installing them. Nor does the page you link to. Could you let us know how to search for, download and install an app for uTorrent? I have the latest version of uTorrent, and have some apps installed, but I think I was given the opportunity to install them with the installation of uTorrent.

Thanks.

by Joab on 24. August 2011 - 16:31  (78283)

Thanks for the reply, I will create a section for it.
In the meantime if you click on the link (it is the same for all of them - http://www.utorrent.com/get-started/apps) then all of the official apps are there and you just install them from there.
Hope That helped.

Thanks for the comments, I will start work on a VPN article.

Concerning a VPN I have been using Hotspot Shield for a long time now with no problems. It is free for home use.
Only draw back is that it shows ads at the top of your browser. I eliminate those using Adblock add-on in my Firefox browser. Never see any ads and my IP address is changed randomly about every ten minutes. Usually shows I live in Germany,Spain etc.
Hope this helps!!

Perhaps Gizmos could do a page on VPNs or any other way of hiding yourself.
Even if not free, I'm sure many would like reliable independent advice on the subject

by Joab on 24. August 2011 - 14:28  (78263)

Yes, this is a good idea I was thinking of making one however I really don't have much of an idea about the subject.
I will do a little research and see about creating one.
Thanks,

The much underrated and recently updated FortClient Standard Security Suite (Free) includes a VPN along with a really good firewall, web filter and other stuff. Their AV performance is increasing all the time and they are now climbing up the test charts to join the big boys (for what that's worth) :D

I find their own site a bit confusing, especially since they introduced a "Lite" version as well, so here is a link to the Softpedia page.

by Joab on 24. August 2011 - 18:35  (78290)

Oh, I heard of that a while ago.
I'll uninstall my things and give it a try.
Cheers,

by MidnightCowboy on 24. August 2011 - 19:24  (78293)

Incidentally, you don't have to install the whole suite just to try out one part. Depending on what you want to do with it, they can be selected individually at install.

by Joab on 24. August 2011 - 19:47  (78296)

Well I installed it all and it seems decent but I have realized that I have absolutely no idea what i'm doing with the VPN, even their own guide doesn't make it clear.

by MidnightCowboy on 25. August 2011 - 6:43  (78315)

Me neither, although having experience of people tracking there's always a way to locate someone if they really need to be found :) Always amazes me how folks use these things to be "anonymous" and then plaster their details all over Facebook and Twitter. Social site searching is now becoming the number one "first call" for government agencies (especially child protection and benefit fraud) and the Police.

uMap isn't revealing any information that you aren't giving away anyway. If you don't like other downloaders knowing where you are, don't use bitTorrent! All your peers will know your IP address, and uMap is just looking this up in a freely available geo-location service. Websites you visit are also completely capable of doing this.

Your only real solution to this is to use a VPN, so your traffic comes from Sweden or somewhere.

Mr.X can you recommend a VPN for someone in Sao Paulo state, Brasil?

by Joab on 24. August 2011 - 12:40  (78253)

Hello and thanks for the comment. That is a very good point, I've tried using a VPN but I can't really find many good ones for free. I'm currently trying itshidden, but I'm not sure how good it is though.

What do you recommend?
Thanks,

by Mr X (not verified) on 24. August 2011 - 13:38  (78258)

I'm not aware of any good free ones. There are several good ones that are quite cheap.
