Best Free Collision Avoidance Game for Mac OS

  • Armagetron Advanced

"A Tron clone in 3D. This has been the tagline of Armagetron, since, well, a very long time, and is probably the shortest and most accurate description possible. Tron was an arcade game based on the movie of the same name, release by Disney in 1982. The original game consisted of 4 sub-games, the only one of concern is the 'Light Cycles' one, in which the player uses a left/right joystick to control a 'Light Cycle' which leaves a wall behind it wherever the cycle it goes, turning only at 90 degree angles. The player must then get the AI to crash into their wall while avoiding hitting the AI's own wall themselves. Those were the humble beginnings of Armagetron Advanced's game play, which has now blossomed into 16 player mayhem, with highly advanced AI, network game play, and of course all in a 3D environment."

  • Nuncabola

"Nuncabola ... A cross platform rolling ball arcade game similar to the wooden box type puzzles where you must maneuver a ball along a maze by tilting the playing field itself! As avid readers of (the Neverball) forum may know, the lockstep graphics never worked for Nuncabola's developer. That's why (he) was disappointed to see Neverball 1.5 released with the "very apparent and quite disturbing" judder left unfixed. This, among other reasons, motivated (him) to finally start (his) own, personal version of Neverball. The result is a Java application he calls Nuncabola, and he's sharing it here with anyone who is interested. In order to enable productive work, he decided to redesign the entire code structure. Internally, this is a complete rewrite. Externally, Nuncabola is still rather faithful to Neverball in terms of design and features. However, a number of changes have already been made, and more may be introduced as development continues. "

It currently features 77 playable levels, and runs under a wide variety of operating systems (Linux, Windows, MacOSX, etc.). Pingus was started at the end of 1998 with the simple goal to create a Free (as in freedom, not as in free beer) Lemmings® clone. The Free means you get the sources and are allowed and encouraged to change and distribute them. You basically get everything that I used to create this game. In the years it has grown than quite a bit over the original goal and become something more than just a clone, we have original artwork, a built-in level editor, new actions, multiplayer and a few other features."

"If you don't know about Lemmings®, here comes a short introduction. It is a puzzle game developed in 1991 by DMA Design. The player takes command in the game of a bunch of small animals and has to guide them through levels. Since the animals walk on their own, the player can only influence them by giving them commands, like build a bridge, dig a hole or redirect all animals in the other direction. The goal of each level is to reach the exit, for this multiple combination of commands are necessary. The game is presented in a 2D side view. While Pingus is based on the idea of Lemmings®, it however doesn't try to be an exact clone, it has included a few ideas of its own, like the worldmap or secret levels, which might be familiar from games the Super Mario World and other Nintendo games. It has also a few new actions, like the jumper which weren't presented in the original game."

Best Free Physics Game for Mac OS

  • Numpty Physics

Numpty Physics"An excellent open source and multi-platform with 35 built-in levels. It has more to offer than the free prototype of Crayon Physics Deluxe.

You're able to draw custom shapes and have access to all levels at once, so you don't have to worry if you get stuck at a level. The sketches look more like what a 3 year old has drawn and don't have the professional feel of Crayon Physics. But who cares? I'm also not an artist!" (Review)

The detection of the grid within the image can be automatic.  A crossword can be exported as an HTML page, allowing it to be printed from a web browser. To conserve printer ink or toner, the blocks of a blocked grid in an exported HTML file may consist of diagonal lines of a specified density instead of a square of solid color. • Lines

"Lines is an addictive one-player cross platform board game written in Java. Lines game. Place balls of the same color in line to get score. The game starts with a 9 by 9 board with three balls chosen out of seven different colours. The player can move one ball per turn, and the player may only move a ball to a particular place if there is a path (linked set of vertical and horizontal empty cells) between the current position of the ball and the desired destination. The goal is to remove balls by forming lines (horizontal, vertical or diagonal) of at least five balls of the same colour. If the player does form such lines of at least five balls of the same colour, the balls in those lines disappear, and he gains one turn, i.e. he can move another ball. If not, three new balls are added, and the game continues until the board is full. This video game was developed in Russia in 1993. As with all Sokoban type games you must find a clear path to the spaces you need to fill - without blocking yourself - so it takes some planning ... Best Free Ball Redirection Puzzle Game for Mac OS

  • BallPlay Genius

"Welcome to BallPlay Genius. A very easy to understand, yet challenging. The object is easy. Some balls roll over the screen and you can change their course by setting up plates or walls, or by removing plates. The concept of the game is pretty easy.... The balls go back and forth. They roll, as soon as they hit the wall, they'll turn 180 degrees and go back until they hit a wall. Now that's no fun now, is it? Therefore you can place plates in the puzzle. They change the direction of the balls. The number of plates you can put into a puzzle is limited, so check your limits before you start puzzle it all out. You can also remove plates by selecting the empty tool in the tool menu. Some puzzles allow placing walls, but that's a rarity. Now you can do something with the balls. What you got to do depends on the task the puzzle gives you. When you get your task in the puzzle done without getting too many balls destroyed you win the puzzle. The game is great due to it's simplicity. Anyone can understand the rules, yet the game DOES offer a challenge. The game also features a puzzle editor so come up with whatever creativity you have in mind. Features: Challenging puzzles, but still easy to understand. A puzzle editor so that more puzzles can be created and swapped. A random order feature so no problem if a puzzle doesn't get solved. A tracker that tracks which puzzles you've done and not done. You can use multiple "accounts" for that (with password if you wish) so all players on your computer have their personal data."

Best Free Choose Your Own Adventure Story for Mac OS

  • Java Fabled Lands (JaFL)

"Java Fabled Lands (JaFL) ... (formerly known as FLApp) ... Java Fabled Lands is an adaptation of the Fabled Lands gamebook series: travel through a fantastic world, amassing skill, wealth, and fame, while avoiding sudden death. Presents the complete text to preserve the spirit of the original Choose Your Own Adventure type books of the same name. (Do you remember Fighting Fantasy? No? What about Choose Your Own Adventure? A few heads are nodding.) The basic concept is an interactive story, written in the second person, cut up into short numbered sections; at the end of each section you're given a choice as to which section comes next, based on your 'action' within the narrative. A gamebook adds some RPG-ish rules to the mix. Essentially it's a solo role-playing game with a lot of reading. This project is an adaptation of the six published books for the computer. Note the word 'adaptation': I've tried to stay as close as possible to the original text, handling all the rules and leaving the player free to read and enjoy without the (sometimes tedious) record-keeping. The player is faced with something very much like a web-page, and other windows displaying a map and the character's abilities. Requires Java 6. "

This application lets you play blackjack on an account you can create that keeps track of your settings and your money. There is an AI player to play against and try to beat, and a learning mode where you can learn how to play blackjack perfectly, and make money. Best Free Kakuro Game for Mac OS

  • CrozzSum

"Crozz Sum (Kakuro), A simple cross platform Kakuro puzzle generator, written using Java Swing. Kakuro is a kind of logic puzzle that is often referred to as a mathematical transliteration of the crossword. The canonical Kakuro puzzle is played in a grid of filled and barred cells, "black" and "white" respectively. Apart from the top row and leftmost column which are entirely black, the grid is divided into "entries"—lines of white cells—by the black cells. The black cells contain a diagonal slash from upper-left to lower-right and a number in one or both halves, such that each horizontal entry has a number in the black half-cell to its immediate left and each vertical entry has a number in the black half-cell immediately above it. These numbers, borrowing crossword terminology, are commonly called "clues". The objective of the puzzle is to insert a digit from 1 to 9 inclusive into each white cell such that the sum of the numbers in each entry matches the clue associated with it and that no digit is duplicated in any entry. It is that lack of duplication that makes creating Kakuro puzzles with unique solutions possible, and which means solving a Kakuro puzzle involves investigating combinations more, compared to Sudoku in which the focus is on permutations. There is an unwritten rule for making Kakuro puzzles that each clue must have at least two numbers that add up to it, since including only one number is mathematically trivial when solving Kakuro puzzles."

Best Free Recreated Classic Board Games for Mac OS

  • Scrabble3D

"Scrabble3D extends the conventional idea of Scrabble by adding a third dimension. You do not only play from left to right or top to bottom but as well 'into the depth' that means in front or back of tiles. Scrabble3D has more fields and uses therefore a larger letter set. Compared to the classic game, the major focus is on the search for valid and precious combinations, especially when the cube gets filled with tiles. Of course classic games using a 15x15 fields or Superscrabble with 21x21 squares can be played too, and you may configure any field setting yourself. Aim of the program is to provide as much flexibility as possible: you can configure letter set, dictionary, localization, and design in various aspects. An excellent recreation of "Scrabble" that goes a dimension further."

  • Cluedo

"Cluedo, The Art of Murder is a murder mystery game in which you take on the roll of a detective, you use your logic and deduction to deduce the murderer and win the game, proving that you are the master sleuth. Best Free Sudoku Puzzle, Generator and Solver for Mac OS

  • Dancing Sudoku

"Dancing Sudoku is a cross platform Java based tool that can solve or generate special Sudoku puzzles — including 4X4 grid and 16X16 grid Sudoku puzzles — in addition to the regular 9X9 grid puzzles!

Introduction: Dancing Sudoku is a tool that can solve or generate Sudoku puzzles. You might wonder why there is another of those tools needed since there are already many of them available. This project was started as a kind of academic exercise. On a forum I found the remark that Donald Knuth's algorithm for solving the Exact Cover Problem can be applied to the Sudoku problem. Donald Knuth calls his algorithm 'Dancing Links', and that is where the name 'Dancing Sudoku' comes from. By transforming the Sudoku problem into an Exact Coverage problem, Sudoku puzzles can be solved in a very fast and efficient way. There is also no distinction anymore between easy and hard to solve puzzles. The algorithm treats every puzzle as a recursive search tree.

Installation: For running the application you will need a Java Runtime Environment installed on your computer. Now, follow the next steps: • Download DancingSudoku.zip from here. • Extract the content to your local filesystem. • Go to the ..\DancingSudoku\bin folder. • Double click on the DancingSudoku.jar file - That is all. Editor's top Sudoku recommendation because it makes these super easy 4 by 4 Sudoku grids, as well as impossible 16 by 16 grids, in addition to the common 9 by 9 kind."

  • Macdoku

  • MUSoSu

"MUSoSu - Marios Sudoku, is a sudoku solver/ generator written in Java. MUSoSu is a free software project for playing, solving and generating Sudoku games. It is developed in Java, so it should work on any system, and it's source is distributed under the terms of the General Public License. As a sudoku solver it tries to simulate the way human players solve sudokus. Several selectable heuristic methods are provided for this purpose. Brute force solving is also supported for completeness. As a sudoku generator it tries to create sudoku problems which don't require "trial and error" methods to be solved. MUSoSu tries to be explanatory and educative, showing the actions taken to solve a sudoku and providing aids to the human player. MUSoSu is themable through XML coded themes, which can be created with the theming tool provided in the program. MUSoSu is developed with extendability in mind. New solving or generating methods can be relatively easily added. MUSoSu also features a difficulty estimator based on it's native solver and also the ability to import, edit and save sudokus. MUSoSu runs on any platform and operating system where Java 5.0 or later is available. A port for mobile java devices is possible but not yet done. Future thoughts also include network/distributed game functionality in combat and collaborative modes. "

No. This entry is a bad joke.

There IS NO Macintosh Binary for this APP! You expect my typical reader to Download the Source package/Check the Hashes to see it hasn't been tampered with/Compile this to MAKE a binary copy/Start the compiled App in the Terminal - all for a Command Line program with NO GUI?

I, myself, have never compiled a package to MAKE a Program: and I do NOT expect my readers to do things I cannot. And I do not use command line programs: you must remember a whole bunch of complicated command line sequences and be a good touch typist as well. Frankly, that stuff went out with DOS 5.0: And I do not care to revisit those days. Programs I will use have Menus and can be controlled with a pointing device: like a mouse, or trackpad, or trackball. And my readers expect the same.

Please, in the future do not post any program as a suggestion for this list for which you must compile your own binary! And, I would highly dissuade you from suggesting anymore command line programs: Because I do not intend to post them unless they really fulfill a critical function that no other program (With a GUI) can match. I want the 10 minutes of my life, that it took me to check this useless entry, Back!

Juice:

Thank you for all the useful suggestions .... but a few of your suggestions are old programs that no longer even launch on Mac OS 10.7 or later, or won't work properly on any recent Mac OS.

Take "Juice", from 2005, for example: it won't even launch!

Or your suggestion for "Burn" - which quits in the middle of a Burn - and is no longer supported by the developer: I removed that from this list 2 weeks ago! (and commented on its removal - so no one would suggest it again - in the editor's forum: in a thread with the words Mac and Gory in the title ... please read it?)

And thank you for all the suggested games. But I don't happen to have a spare year handy in which to check to see if they are still working on Mac OS 10.9 ... nor to even post the 100 games in the "Merry Christmas" list I made (in the "Recent Finds" section in the editors forum) - that I know still work because I pre-tested them out FOR Christmas! This is my first time online this week ... my real life has become way too busy to allow me any time online to post new things ANYWHERE.

Pile 'em On!!! But I will not be posting new stuff until I've checked the whole existing list and removed all the posted things that don't work any longer (like Burn). And that's not going to be soon if I only get 3 hours online a week - only by getting up super early at 4 AM some day ....

After I check the existing things on the list to see if they still work, and weed out the remaining non-functional items, then - and only then - will I start weeding out any non-functioning suggestions and adding them to the list. I seem to be the only editor here with a Macintosh - and half of my friends own Macs too - so it falls on me to see if they still work before they are posted. It is a big responsibility ... and weeks of continuous non-stop working just to test the remaining ones ... and I have less time for the internet now than ever before (I'm not liking the fact I can't be here as much as I wish to be ... ).

My hour is up .... see you next week.

Sorry about that. I got those from Best of Mac lists from the net.

I have 30 more to check/post and then I am done ;)

Yes, those suggestions ... and then I have Another List to dig through (leave that one to me, Please)!

After I get done posting those 100 Games I stored away for later in "Recent Finds", that is ....

And I'll be posting new things for a long time to come ....

No, it is my bad for failing to list Burn BY NAME in my editing list ... I'm just getting done spanking myself over it in the editors forum. Mea Culpa!!!

Caddy - the HTTP/2 web server:

Phocus - free image processing software:
http://www.hasselblad.com/software/phocus

Apparently this is a 'Yes, BUT ....' program with hidden catches to it ... I'll list it here: BUT with a few caveats.

First thing upon launch: "Phocus wants to access my contacts.". Well. I cannot think of a legitimate purpose that a big camera company (that only has very wealthy clients) would want the name/address/number/department/ETC of everyone I know (presumably all of their wealthy clients never think twice and freely share this information?) - but I can think of several purposes they might use this information for that I might be unhappy about at a later time.

So, NO: they do not get permission from the system to access my contacts - denied!

Then this sneaky program tries to "call home" anyway: behind your back! Thank goodness for "Little Snitch" (I have purchased) warning me about bad activities tried over my internet connection!

Now, there are legitimate reasons a program might want to call home: to check for a newer version of itself is the common usage. But a good developer always warns you, with a prompt or two ... something to the effect of "AnyAPP would like to check for updates. (You must be connected to the internet to continue.)" {CANCEL} { OK } before it snatches at your internet connection, and sometimes the part in parenthesis is in a separate notifier box with {CONTINUE} instead of { OK }.

Having already tried to grab up all my contacts personal information: NOW Phocus will try to transmit information through my internet connection without me noticing it - until it is too late. What say you 'Little Snitch'? DENIED!!!!! Do NOT let Phocus call home, I said.

Now Phocus insists I register it - with my Hasselblad camera serial number, and a whole long user profile - 'for support purposes' (marketing support ... I'll bet): good thing there is a {LATER} Button: or I'd have quit checking this software out and given a failing grade to it right then. It will nag you regularly to register it, you bet!

Finally I get to the Welcome dialog. I checked the program out. It is "Adobe Photoshop" complicated in there: just the way I like it. Seems like well written code - just that it acts snoopy without permission. IF you trust Hasselblad will not snoop through your computer for data: go ahead and install this "Free Download" program.

Is there any way I can batch remove 3249 unwanted emails from my ipad. I have mail "ruled" to avoid spam on my syncd mac but the syncing seeme to occur prior to the sorting.

I think so ... but I do not use an iPad or Apple "Mail", myself. Here is how I would theoretically proceed: 1. Get them all in a group. Arrange their sorting order so as to get as many spam messages in a contiguous block as is possible - hopefully they are all marked as junk and you can sort by junk status. You can arrange to sort them by clicking on the tops of the various columns (sender email address/junk status/date/subject/ ... and so on) - which will regroup them by sender or subject ... or whatever. 2. Bulk delete shortcuts On my Mac Desktop I can "Select" a large contiguous block of files in the finder - or messages in my email client (or in quite a few other Mac programs) in one of two ways: Drag Select ... where you hold the left mouse button down while drawing a rectangle that encloses JUST the items you want ... OR Select the first message of the block you want deleted - then HOLD DOWN the Shift Key and click on the last message of the block you want deleted: that selects all messages between the first and last ones. Then click Delete. Go get the iPad Manual: https://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1595/en_US/ipad_user_guide... and check page 55 Please. "Delete, move, or mark multiple messages. While viewing a list of messages, tap Edit. Select some messages, then choose an action. If you make a mistake, shake iPad immediately to undo."
Sadly, Xee is not freeware anymore. :-(
Yes, the latest version from the Apple App store DOES cost money .... HOWEVER ... the last free version of Xee - 2.2 - is still freely available, and DOES seem to still work on Mac OS X 10.9.5 ... at least it launched when I tested it, and all of the pieces appeared to be there ... I'm putting it BACK ... it is still of use. "The Last Free Version" is still good enough.
Thank You. I will remove it.
