Best Free Online Applications and Services

Introduction

Best Free Online Applications and ServicesOnline applications (also known as web applications or webware) are getting more popular, particularly when broadband Internet access has become more common and readily available to more users. With online applications and services, you do not need to download and install them into your computer for using them—you just need to open up a browser and access them online.

Not only that you can save harddisk space as they do not need to be installed, but also you can work with files that are saved online from any computer anywhere, without the need to carry a storage device even a USB stick around with you.

Besides, you don't have to worry about different operating systems as these applications and services are cross-platform, running in your browser as a client. Neither do you need to keep updating your software versions, as you will get any new software updates and bug fixes automatically whenever you access them.

Like to use them? Here we have compiled a list for best free online applications and services—click on related links or product logos and you can start using them right away.

On line notes organisers, note makers etc.

Does anybody know why none of these programs offer a simple import facility for existing data we might have on our Windows machines, such as a comma delimited, tab delimited or other simple file.

In the 21st century we really shouldn't need to re-enter all our existing data at the keyboard to make full use of these online programs. None of the ones listed appear to offer such a capability as far as I can see, including on line database programs I have also found.

Any suggestions?

Focus@will is the first on line music service that helps you focus when you are working, studying, writing and reading. It’s for anyone who needs to be productive on demand when working to a deadline, such as journalists, lawyers, students, writers and coders (available for USA only until official release):

One good site for digital resources is http://www.toolsie.com/, it has a small collections of resources from QR generation to pic editing.

Found nothing of any interest.

A few really good free tools out their that I use with my startups are

http://www.pingdom.com/ - to check site loading speed
http://pagejack.com/ - to check server status, and keyword density

Good for startups that are eCommerce focused, gotta make sure your site is running smoothly and efficiently.

by Jojo Yee on 9. September 2012 - 0:56  (98974)

Thanks Gatsbe. Pingdom is in the list.

I notice that hotmail (outlook.com) and skydrive and other MS products (online calendar/word) are for some reason missing from this list. I am not saying they are the best but they are free and unlike some of the google products they do not (as much) use your private data to make money (ie sellyoursoleware)

by Jojo Yee on 7. August 2012 - 6:24  (97328)

Skydrive and other Microsoft products such Office Web Apps are in the list Bryan. A quick way to check whether an item is in the list is to press Ctrl-F on a browser then type in the item name. Hope this helps.

The glide thing looks super-neat.

by alexxx46 on 20. June 2012 - 19:49  (95169)

I've just discovered WeatherSpark. Looks neat, and there are tons of weather info there actually.
However, the question is, how accurate are the forecasts for my region?

Your Best Free Online Download Manager - KeepVid - does not seem to be really free. I visited the site today hoping to download it when I noticed it says that one will need to purchase a licence before one can start using it; only the downloading seems to be free.

by Jojo Yee on 6. May 2012 - 4:48  (93098)

You're spot on Rajendra Rai. The program for Windows is not free, but it's totally free when you use its online download service without needing to install the program.

This article focuses on the online applications and services. With them, you don't need to download and install anything into your computer for using them—you just need to open up a browser and access them online.

http://www.yourdictionary.com/

This is the best online dictionary for me. It's uncluttered, clean and most importantly provide meanings that can be understood by any layman.

After trying typingstudy (in the speedtest department) I have found that some of the material don't work.

With some searching I've found that typeonline.co.uk is a fairly good ONLINE typing tutor. It simulates word processing in a more "natural" manner, allowing you to back-track and make corrections in your typing. Most other typing tutors don't allow you to do that once you hit the spacebar after typing a word.

One other thing I like about typeonline.co.uk is that I don't have to worry about cookies (I use Sandboxie FREE anyway) - something I try to minimise as much as possible. [This is why I haven't tried typingweb after reading their policy.]

Users in the USA will have to put up with the UK spelling of some words though - a small fee I think.

All in all, the most comprehensive typing tutor IMHO is Kiran's Typing Tutor. It's only drawback is it's not "online" meaning you have to sacrafice a bit of hard drive space.

Your feedback is appreciated Ivan. File Encryptor is now removed from the list and replaced with another online service Encryptur. Give it a try if that works for you.

Hi!
Notice: in "Home and Office / Best Free Online PDF Tools" category PDF Hammer is no longer available. Now Nitro PDF Professional is suggested at PDF Hammer's website.
