Introduction

If there is one thing that is special about the iPhone/iPod, it's the huge number of apps and games that are available for this amazing device. The games available can even include having to shake or tilt your iPhone/iPod. The list I have complied below, makes finding the gems out of the vast selection of free games available for your iPhone/iPod, a whole lot easier.

Please note: All games that I review are made using my iPhone 4S and iPad. I am making a full effort to include a variety of games that are compatible with as many models of the iPhone/iPod as possible. Any game that is listed that doesn't work with your device - feel free to let me know. I also would be more than happy to review games that you suggest. Any suggestions or comments about games can be posted into the comment section below.

Thanks everyone! Let's get started!

Random Heroes!Random Heroes is a platformer game which is really fun to play! You're running, jumping, shooting baddies, and collecting coins. The best part? The coins you save up can be used to buy better weapons and different looks for your character, which also adds more health and/or more damage. If you're a fan of platformers, this is definitely a download that you will enjoy!

Real Racing 3 is probably one of the best quality free games I've seen in a while! Made by Electronic Arts, this racing game features some awesome 3D graphics and plenty of fun. It's pretty much Forza Motorsports for the iDevice! This is definitely worth the download. There is a rather nice and lengthy career to keep you busy for quite some time. If you enjoy racing, give this one a try and you won't be disappointed.

Extreme Roadtrip 2A great game you have to play is Extreme Road Trip 2. This game gets quickly addictive! As the game describes in its tutorial, your brakes are stuck and you have to survive as long as you can. You will have to achieve boost from performing tricks so that you don't run out of gas, and while you're doing that, try grabbing some coins as well so that you can buy a range of better vehicles to try.

It has full Game Center support (w/ Achievements).

Product 2Solitaire - If you like Windows Solitaire then this is the app for you. Drag and drop to move cards is supported as well as both portrait and landscape orientations. Saving games have never been so easy in Solitaire, if you leave the app then it automatically saves and will be there when you open it again.

It has full Game Center support (w/ Achievements).

RageHDRAGE HD is a similar to the game Cube - it is a really fun first-person-shooter. From the game you have probably established that it is in HD, and similar to Cube showcases the graphics of iOS devices.

The game is set in post-apocalyptic 'Game-Show', with the basic objective of killing mutants/zombies.

The down-side to the ground-breaking graphics and game-play is that it has a big size of 746MB. This for me, is too much to mantain on my 8GB phone that is actually around 6.8GB after firmware.

It has full Game Center support (w/ Achievements).

FraggerFragger is one of the biggest selling apps on the app-store: just behind some of the greats like Angry Birds or Doodle Jump. I originally bought this game a year ago, when it cost money. Now however, it is free and as good as ever. This is a really great little arcade timewaster. If you don't know, the object of the game is to throw a 'frag' through various obsticles in order to blow-up enemy soliders. My descrption doesn't do justice to this amazing game.

It has full Game Center support (w/ Achievements).

Pocket PlanesPocket Planes is a game by Nimblebit, which has taken off since its release in June 2012. In the game, you must manage your very own airport, starting with only a few planes and a few destinations to fly people and cargo to where they want to go for coins, which are needed to purchase more airport destinations, or Bux, which is another in-game currency for purchasing more planes for your fleet. Pocket Planes features an arcade sort of feel with its great use of pixelated graphics. This game is definitely worth trying out, especially if you enjoy a little bit of strategy.

Stick CricketStick Cricket is a hugely popular cricket batting game. It is a game all about timing and shot selection. As a cricket fan this game is amazing; however, I know several friends who regularly play this game without knowing or liking anything about the sport. It is incredibly addictive, but has a big downside: it is restrictively free - meaning that in essence it is a lite version. This does not mean it is unplayable, There are several different modes on the free version so the playability is not effected. The game's layout is slick and fast responding whilst being attractive.

It has full Game Center support (w/ Achievements).

Tiny City Runner has a simple and somewhat addictive concept. Make it to the other side by jumping over buildings and anything else that is in your way. For me, it doesn't take long to get frustrated once the levels get hard. It's not the biggest time waster out there, but you'll get a little time out of it.

ScreenshotDon't Steal My Banana is a game with a simple concept, but creates some rather addictive gameplay. The storyline? Well, you play as a monkey that finds a huge banana. Now, everyone else wants it, so you have to protect it using whatever is at your disposal. The controls are simple as well. The longer you hold your finger on the screen, the further your object will be thrown. There is a single ad between waves of enemies, but it doesn't seem to become too annoying. This game is definitely worth a download.

Word Winder provides a new twist on word games that will have no trouble in providing entertainment to those who enjoy word games, but unless you're willing to purchase extra puzzles in-game, you may get a few hours at most. It must be mentioned though that this has been released quite recently, so maybe more puzzles will be available in future updates.

For now, there are only 5 puzzles per game mode. Out of the 9 possible game types, 4 are available without in-game purchase. Each game mode gives a board of letters to create words. Words must be created by selecting a letter and then touching letters which touch the previous letter.

The first mode is called Finder. In the game, a game board of 36 letters is provided that you must use to spell the answers to the clues which you are given to solve. A time limit will affect your score bonus.

Another game mode is called Frenzy. In this one, you are once again given a game board of 36 letters, but this time, you must find the 3 letter words, 4 letter words, and 5 letter words, etc. You are timed in this mode as well.

The third game option is called Challenge. The object here is to make 2 lines of letters that touch from the 16x16 board's left side to the right side, and the board's top side to bottom side in as few moves as possible, preferably beating David L. Hoyt's score!

The fourth game mode is called Finder Roundup. This final game mode plays much the same as the original Frenzy mode mentioned earlier, the only difference here is that the words are formed the same as a word search: horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.

CubeCube is a single-player and multi-player first-person-shooter that provides satisfying and fast old school game-play. It is a landscape-style engine that pretends to be an indoor FPS engine, which combines very high precision dynamic occlusion culling with a form of geometric mip-mapping on the whole world.

This is a great step for iOS gaming. fernLightning showcases some of the best looking graphics on any portable device. Not only that, but it is genuinely a good game, in that you can play it as a single-player FPS or play with friends. For me, this would be amazing if not for the controls: they really are abysmal.
