Anti-Virus and Spyware (Resident)

I'm curious about an issue.  With most of the newer antivirus software (Antivir, NOD32, Kapersky, AVG, Avast, etc.) do most of you ALSO run a resident spyware cleaner (such as Spyware Doctor or Spysweeper, etc.)?  I know for sure that AVG includes a resident spyware application and scans daily for both virus's and spyware.

Do you run both an antivirus and a resident spyware/malware cleaner at the same time?  Do you run antivirus, spyware cleaner, and something like Threatfire all together (resident)?

I am using currently on access NOD32 v.4 antivirus , Sandboxie, AnVir Task Manager, Online Armor 3.5 Pro, KeyScrambler, Router with integrated firewall.
On demand scanners: Malwarebytes', SUPERAntiSpyware.
As for browsers: Mozilla Firefox, Opera and Safari.
Windows OS: XP Pro SP3 (not regularly updated)
OpenOffice.org instead of Microsoft's and Foxit Reader instead of Adob's.
Patching the programs regularly through Secunia.

i use avira personal (free edition) cos its the best in my opinion, and to back it up i've got superantispyware and malwarebytes, both very good antispyware i think. i only use windows firewall as i think 3rd party firewalls offer far more security, but require more time, patience and tweaking (omg comodo was so much hassle), and i prefer careful practices over multiple layers of security anyway. i haven't got any other security protection

ThreatFire is good. I don't use AVG because it is heavy on resources.

Cole Manager: You have 65 minutes to take the FCC GROL test.
Student: May I have a lifeline please.

I would like to run Kaspersky AV on my machine, but will not install because I have Comodo firewall installed. Cannot just turn Comodo off for installation. Kaspersky says Comodo must be uninstalled. Why is that? I like Comodo and do not want to give it up. Before doing a reinstall of Windows, I removed Comodo to try another brand, and when tried to change back, Comodo would not reinstall. Do not want to go through that again.

I also use Sandboxie, Antivir free, Comodo firewall and hips at the same time. No real-time AS.

I usually use Sandboxie free, AntiVir free and ThreatFire as resident.

by kendall on 2. October 2008 - 4:47  (8578)

I'm assuming that you ran Antivir and Threatfire both resident at the same time?

by JonathanT on 2. October 2008 - 5:32  (8579)

Yes.

Personally I use Kaspersky 7 suite which I got 6 months free from this site (thank you Gizmo!) but even when I was using the free Anti-Vir I only used that and Threatfire as resident scanners and with my Router counting as my inbound firewall I didnt have any infections. In the past I have run things like spyware doctor, a-squared and Spyware Terminator at different times but they had a tendency to cause conflicts or slow my system down and seemed a bit superfluous so I just use the manual scans every now and then.

Hope that helps
