In bringing you this column every week, I evaluate a lot of software. You get to hear about the good stuff, but there's a lot more that I don't mention on these pages because it doesn't pass my tests. So anything which I write about, and which also ends up staying on my own computer long-term, must surely be among the best of the best.
One such freeware program is Advanced IP Scanner. It scans your PC network and tells you details about all the devices that are connected, both by cable and by wifi. This might include your own PC, a laptop, your router, one or more phones, a printer, and possibly more besides. Including, of course, anything which has connected to your network without your knowledge and/or permission, such as a phone or computer in the house or office that you didn't know about.
The program, which claims to have 26 million users, is at https://www.advanced-ip-scanner.com/ and is a 9 MB download. It's rated as reputable by Web of Trust, and as malware-free by VirusTotal. It's fully compatible with Windows 10.
The most recent version of Advanced IP Scanner was released back in April. So if you are a regular user and you've not upgraded for a while, now is a good time. And if you've never tried this program before, give it a go. It's really easy to use, even if you don't know anything about networks.
