Some of the daily time-limited offers provided by Give Away of the Day are very good indeed and, I believe, worth highlighting to TSA readers. This month, the quality has been high. We've recommended ArtStudio in the past (here). If you missed it last time round, here it is again today

I received and email about this product sent at 11:55PM on Wed and when I opened it the next day at 4:45AM it was expired... HUH?
This offer has already expired long back.. and I got the mail too. It must have happened by mistake... we are looking into it.
Hi "techsupportalert" team.
FYI
I received this 'Hot Finds' posting in my e-mail inbox today, 16 April 2010.
Glitch in the system maybe?

I can't download any paints because I'm on this mini computer.Does anyone know non-download paint programs?
Try Sumo Paint listed here if you mean online applications.

IMHO ArtStudio is worth downloading. It shows up a couple times per year too...
Honestly I rarely download software from GAOTD. Yes on occasions quality software can be obtained there.
IMHO most of what is offered there can be substituted with free software that is as good or better. Just because its commercial software being offered free does not make it quality software.
Cheers

Hi Wdhpr
Thanks for your thoughts. Here's my rapid rebuttal (please excuse the note form):
"Just because its commercial software being offered free does not make it quality software."
Agreed 100%
"Yes on occasions quality software can be obtained there.
IMHO most of what is offered there can be substituted with free software that is as good or better."
Mostly yes... but a significant minority of the software on offer fits purpose very well.
Some valued examples:
- Online Armor firewall is highly recommended by MC.
- PDFZilla won Jojoyee's seal of approval!
- Several of the disk maintenance utilities (partitioning etc) from Paragon are among the best available and provide more options than their freeware versions.
- Glary Utilities Pro includes a very handy context menu editor and a good, user-friendly registry cleaner.
- InPaint and ImageMender provide two different algorithms for removing unwanted stuff from digital images; both are valid.
- Topaz Moment provides best quality capture of stills from videos.
- Audio Transcoder would be my personal desert island audio file conversion program.
etc...
Personally, I think it's worth alerting Gizmo Freeware users to some of the genuinely valuable offers, such as these.

I'm not a great lover of this site myself for various reasons but I agree wholeheartedly with Bob's last sentence. Irrespective of personal preferences our purpose here is to serve up interesting stuff for our own visitors to then pass judgment on for themselves. We also need to serve them what they want and not necessarily what we think might be best for them.
Am I still right in thinking though that a lot of the software on GOTD is in some way either butchered specially for the offer or has additional restrictions attached?
Not trying to throwing the baby out with the bath water. Nor do I imply that GAOTD offers not be shown here. My Humble Opinion however remains. I tried to temper my remarks with stating quality software can be had there. In fact I have several offers installed on my machine. I guess by experience I have learned that some offers just don't live up to expectations. Not trying to be overly critical. Sorry if it came across that way.
Cheers

Hey Wdhpr - Real THANKS for your contribution to this mini debate. I too was trying to say that "In fact I have several offers installed on my machine [but] some offers just don't live up to expectations." What I'm trying to say is that that's one of the main reasons why I think it's worth providing pointers to the really good ones.
Cheers
Bob
Yes, I think you're right MC. And quite apart from any crippling, I wouldn't want to touch some of the stuff on offer with a barge pole... or at least without a sandbox. But that's another reason why I think it's worth giving heads-up on the genuinely good giveaways. Which can, on occasion, be very good indeed.
I realize that a minority of TSA users do not like G0tD one little bit. And I'm aware there's an issue with some automated email alerts reaching subscribers after the expiry time. However, I continue to believe that heads-ups on a few of the more attractive giveaways from this unique site are useful to some.
But of course you're free to disagree (erm, politely please...). Kindly bear in mind that we have no direct relationship, financial or otherwise, with the GAOTD site.
Bob
The fact that the softwares from GOTD have to be installed on that day only, is quite a bit of put-off. I may not want to install the program right away, but might want to use it another day, when I need it. Such offers might be good for those, who need the software being offered at that time, or they install it, whether they need it at that time, or not. Anyways, yes, some people might find something of use.
