Introduction

AndroidsIn our list of Best Free Android Apps, we've selected more than 200 apps grouped in various categories, with a brief description of each program. To save you time working out exactly which apps you need most, we've previously picked from the long list nine "must-have" free apps based on the old version 2.2 Froyo of Android system.

With the release of versions 4.x, including ICS, Jelly Bean and KitKat, the Android system has since been improved with fresh functionality and more useful features added by default. Based on these new versions, we've removed some previously selected apps and replaced them with new choices. If you have these versions of the Android system running in your new phone or tablet, these nine apps are a must to install.

All such lists are to some extent subjective, so if you think we have missed out on a great product you feel should be included then post a comment below. Remember we are only interested in free apps that you feel should be installed on every Android device.

KeePassDroid is OK - But Keepass2Android is far superior!

As long as you aren't rooting, no one needs an antivirus on your phone.

Don't bet on that. There are exploits that can attack unrooted Android devices.

An antivirus is not going to stop it. Manufacturers putting out timely security updates will.

...and until they do, there's anti-malware software.

Re: CM Security Antivirus App Lock
CM Security also offer CM Security Lite - Antivirus which uses less power, less memory and has fewer ads.
It seems to work quite satisfactorily.

Why is avast! Mobile Security the recommended anti-malware program here, when the Best Free Antivirus App for Android list shows 3 other programs all scored 5 stars while avast! is only 4 stars?

Many thanks for pointing out, Kipster. It's now been replaced with a new choice and updated in this article.

Maybe, u can try this one:
- Total Commander or Ghost Commander (for ur file manager), and
- aWallet Password Manager (for ur pass. manager).
It's completely free n yet ad-free.

The X-Plore File Manager mentioned is fantastic. It is the easiest one to use when navigating through the file structure and it has no ads.

I would also suggest QuickPic be added as well.

Nice list, using 5 of it already. Two other apps that should be on my phone: Battery Doctor (with widget to turn on/off various settings, very handy if you want to reserve battery as much as possible.) & Evernote.

Thanks for the New Year's recommendations! My woman's transformer can use a couple of these. When prices drop or Tracfone offers a tablet I may buy an android device? Subscribed her to your android email list. Best wishes to you!

Cool list, I also always use Air droid, especially with my tendency to lose the usb wire so it definitely comes in handy!

However, I believe you missed a great free backup app that I've been using quite often lately on my S3 and will come in handy with my upgrade to the soon S4 which is G Cloud Android; they have updated it recently so you can gain up to 8 GB of free space. So yeah, that would be my addition to the list to make it top 10 list ;)
