Here's a long list of good-to-great fonts, mostly aimed at designers.
Although aimed at designers, they are fine for other uses.
There are some that would make good display fonts, while others would look better in blocks of text.

The site has download links to all the fonts under the font samples.
Most of the fonts are PC/Mac, a few are PC only, and there were a few dead links when I visited.
I didn't visit every font site listed, but, some of the font authors have required registration to download fonts when they've been featured on other web sites.
I didn't run across any that needed registration, but it might happen when you go to download a font. The fonts  I've registered for via other web sites haven't sent any unwanted or unasked for email.

There's some flash ads and other site appropriate static ads that aren't too bad.
