Data, data, data. It's everywhere. There's not much you can do if it is hacked, sold or taken from a stolen laptop with confidential information, but there are some suggestions in this article from Lifehacker that can keep your data safe on your end.

The virtual credit card suggestion works very well, I've used it since it was in beta at Paypal. It generates a on-time-use credit card number that's valid only for  that transaction.
None of your personal financial information is involved. The other suggestions and techniques cover some good ground and are worth a read.
