This guide was written on June 25, 2008, and last revised on August 2, 2008.

Hi Gismo! I just wanted to

Hi Gismo!
I just wanted to ask if you had heard about the new window that is coming out in 2010 by Microsoft? It is called windows 7 and it is supposed to exceed Vista. could you tell me more about this new window and if it would be better then Vista? We all know Vista has many issues that needed caring for, but I am starting to get use to it and their had been so many improvements with it, I am not sure if I would even want to try another windows program again. I am hoping we will not be forced into this new one like we have been from XP to Vista.
Thank you for this sight and all the info and help I get here. Keep up the good work.

Hello Ian

1st let me thank you for your effort. Your Freeware lists have always been great for finding what i needed and use it.
I decided to drop a line and attempt to contribute to your list.
In the section of Best Free Drive Encryption Utility you could consider FREE CompuSec from CE-Infosys. This software is FREE for both Professional Business use as well as Personal use.
Having tried both TrueCrypt and CompuSec, i opted for the use of the later.
To keep things short, do take a look and judge on your own.
And yah, the new site looks great.

Hi I am a little worried

Hi

I am a little worried with respect to the trustworthiness about the differentes freewares, because I have noticed that any inexperienced person can add their own ideas, that can be completely false. It would prefer that the site returns to be like the one of before, with a separate section for the ideas of the members.

Thank you

I'm afraid not. It's

I'm afraid not. It's intended to become more-and-more wiki-like; already we allow anyone to post any comment they wish as long as they do not break our very liberal site rules. We don't really have "members" in the sense you mean.
Our Reviews are written by a team of experienced "Category Editors" & of course I would claim that they are trustworthy. The ensuing comments however, often create a debate to which anyone can contribute.

Hi Gizmo, I was looking for

Hi Gizmo,

I was looking for a reasonable OCR program to scan text into my computer. I found a free one out there and the OCR engine is maintained by Google. It's not perfect (what is?) but it did convert a document from my scanner that I needed to edit. I thought you might like to check it out.

1) FreeOCR

FreeOCR is a Windows OCR program including the Windows compiled Tesseract free ocr engine. It includes a Windows installer and It is very simple to use and supports multi-page tiff's, fax documents as well as most image types including compressed Tiff's which the Tesseract engine on its own cannot read. It now has Twain scanning. It cannot open PDF's at the moment but we are working on that. We may include Ghostscript to render PDF documents and our ultimate goal would be to create a searchable PDF. Free OCR uses the Tesseract OCR engine (see below)

2) Tesseract

The Tesseract free OCR engine is an open source product released by Google. It was developed at Hewlett Packard Laboratories between 1985 and 1995. In 1995 it was one of the top 3 performers at the OCR accuracy contest organized by University of Nevada in Las Vegas. The Tesseract engine source code is now maintained by Google.

Watch this space. An editor is already working on constructing the best ever free mac software list

As someone who occasionally

As someone who occasionally needs to correct or append to a comment of my own, I'd find it useful to be able to edit one of my comments rather than have to add another one (a feature which most discussion forums have but which this wiki software may lack - even edits to anonymous comments could successfully be filtered by IP address for those people whose address doesn't change that often).

I agree unfortunately the

I agree unfortunately the CMS we use for this site doesn't yet offer this feature but I hear it's planned for the next version. I think we have heard that one before so I'll keep an eye out for another solution.

I stopped my

I stopped my computer-problem search in its tracks to bookmark this, once I noticed the website's:

1. simplicity
2. speed
3. focus
4. lack of advertising

Anymore, seeing whitespace on the internet is like seeing grassy areas downtown. And the lack of Adobe/Macromedia Flash is -always- a welcome relief. No ads, no clutter, just the straight scoop.

Well done! I'll go back to my searching now, but this site is on my must-return list.
