Best Free Windows 64-bit Screen Session Recorder

     CamStudio

CamStudio will "capture video, sound, or both. It can save videos in both AVI and FLV format. … it is simple and easy to use. … as with most video capture programs, you can set the recording area. This program has a lot of useful features such as annotations, watermarks, and customizable interface. You can also set it to either stay on screen while recording or you can hide it to pull up later." (Best Free Screen Session Recorder)

Best Free Windows 64-bit Icon Tool

     Iconoid

SillySol's Iconoid allows you to change the colour of text associated with your desktop icons. You can also save and restore the position of desktop icons and, optionally, hide and restore icons by clicking on the desktop.

In order to use Iconoid to change the colour of text you must first turn off drop shadows for icon text.  This must be done via Control Panel, System, Advanced System Settings, and then click on the Settings button under Performance.  Right clicking on Computer, and then choosing Properties, will only change settings until you logoff or the PC is rebooted.

     IcoFX

IcoFX has become a commercial product but the free version remains available although it is unsupported.

IcoFX "has a wealth of tools and is equipped with more than 40 image effects. … The program allows you to create icons for your programs, setup files, or favicons for your website or blog. It also allows you to convert your favorite images to icons, or icons to images. Conversion between Macintosh and Windows icons are supported. Other features include supporting Vista icons with PNG compression, true color, transparency (alpha channel) and batch processing capability. IcoFX allows you to create icon libraries, extract and patch icons inside the executable files. However, on some executable files which I tried, the former seems work better than the latter." (Best Free Icon Editor and Replacer)

Online armor is now available for 64 bit windows. How about including that in firewall section of this list.

by rik on 27. August 2010 - 13:31  (56815)

I'm not struck with what is being offered. Better to wait for the dust to settle, I wouldn't recommend this.

I do not like the new Win.7 folder/file search. I've been looking for a 64 bit replacement program that's FREE and easy to use but most of all FINDS ALL the files you are searching for, not just one or two but ALL. Anybody know of such a program for Windows 7- 64 bit program?

by rik on 14. July 2010 - 18:05  (54283)

It would help if you could be a bit more specific about your requirements. You say ALL files but do you mean just names, dates, or content as well?

While I don't pick a top Windows 7 search program, you might want to look over this page for some ideas:

Any freeware Blu-Ray player for Windows 7? MPC Home Cinema x64 won't do it. I've just bought a drive and now discover it's impossible to watch a B-R movie!
TIA,
Alan

Hi,
I'm currently using Spybot Search & Destroy and Spybot resident, don't really have any idea of how much it covers but i do regular scans and the resident runs constantly, is there anything you would recommend instead or as well as? Don't want too many different protection programs that do the same thing!

Recently my computer keeps restarting itself randomly but spybot isn't finding anything and I don't have a clue what's going on!? Any suggestions? I think someone mentioned about Spybot updates causing computers to crash?
(sorry but not read all the above messages haven't got all day!)

by rik on 6. July 2010 - 5:02  (53820)

Apologies for the delay in replying. Definitely switch from Spybot to AVAST or Avira. Personally I wouldn't touch MSE or Panda 'Cloud' with a barge pole. Best of luck.

I've just tried MSE for the 2nd time since it was introduced. Nothing seems to have changed, it constantly injects 1-3 second "screen freezes" randomly and -drastically- slows down the small icon generation in Explorer detail view (and lags the screen while doing so).
I uninstalled it and once again all the problems disappeared. I might also add that Event Viewer throws a "starting too slow" warning for every single startup program with MSE being mentioned in each one's details view. This also went away after I ditched MSE. It does work well at its security functions as far as I can tell. Nothing bad in the logs.
EVGA 780i, E8400, 8 megs, W7 x64, mucho disk space with plenty of swap file space on a nearly empty 3rd drive.

by kendall.a on 9. October 2010 - 0:15  (59287)

I in no way minimize or deny your experience. However, I can say that I've been using MSE on a Windows 7 (64 bit) machine for a couple months now. I absolutely love it! I've used many, many AV's in the past and this is by far the best free AV that I've ever used. Yes, I like it better than both Avira and Avast. I do not experience any of the issues you describe.

I use it along with WinPatrol and think the combination is very light, yet protects me very well.

by garth on 9. October 2010 - 0:36  (59289)

All the machines in my office (Win7 x64) have MSE installed and they all run flawlessly. I'd actually forgotten it was there until a client inserted a flashdrive into one of them the other day and a high risk trojan was detected and eliminated.

by MidnightCowboy on 6. July 2010 - 8:41  (53831)

I can understand the reservations about Panda but whaddayagot against MSE? :)

by rik on 7. July 2010 - 0:03  (53870)

Nothing in particular :) I just don't think it belongs in the same league as AVAST or Avira. Anyway, I am not the best to comment, I suggest interested readers check out our article here.

by tushR on 7. July 2010 - 0:49  (53871)

It's illegal to scare people..specially so sweet like me.
I am using MSE for a month or two, works fine....(though i am Avira fan).

by tushR on 5. July 2010 - 22:43  (53805)

The only security software in your pc is Spybot?
If I was you, I would remove Spybot and use Avast free.

by Tommy123 (not verified) on 6. July 2010 - 0:02  (53808)

Yeah, I did have Avast but read some dodgy reviews about it, thought Spybot sounded like the best. I'll give it another chance ;)

by Rothy (not verified) on 3. July 2010 - 10:06  (53682)

Thank you for this great information!

I recommend CCleaner. There is a native 64 bit version of the software, which installs out of the combined installation program (at least for my understanding).

Sorry, but ccleaner is still pure 32 bit.

Any good 64bit text editor recommendations?

by Anonymous on 28. June 2010 - 19:27  (53388)

Have you tried Windows Notepad. It actually comes standard with windows os ?

by rik on 28. June 2010 - 12:35  (53364)

Our article Best Free Text Editor doesn't mention any, but a 64 bit version of notepad2 is available here.

Note, the latest build of 64 bit Thunderbird 3, codenamed Shredder is 3.0.5 not, 3.0 beta 2. (Works great, too).

by rik on 23. June 2010 - 12:36  (52850)

If it supports the Lightning extension I might be interested. If not, as is most likely, I'll stick with what I have.

Rik - Category Editor

by Anonymous on 24. June 2010 - 1:10  (52922)

Well, I don't use Lightning, but I looked at the Lighning known issues and bug fixes, and it is not a current known issue. And, last bug fix affecting shredder was fixed back in March. So, all I can say is to give it a try. In any case, you should update the article to show the current version of 3.0.5

by rik on 25. June 2010 - 0:49  (53050)

Done as requested, many thanks for pointing this out.

I should perhaps point out that 64 bit Thunderbird 3 is NOT an official project so please don't report problems theres
