Introduction

Video Editing is a necessity for every individual today. You may be a school kid working on a project, a “wanna be” who wants be an overnight start by doing something weird on youtube, a high school girl who wants to preserve sweet memories of the boyfriend, or you may be an office professional who just needs to prepare for his presentation. Whoever you are, you must have a need to edit and convert your videos.

This is where everyone gets stuck, “Ok , I know what I’ve to do. But how do I do it? And what can help me do it easily and quickly? And can I do all of the above without burning a hole into my wallet?”

These questions are going to be answered here, and you’ll learn how to do it in a way that it’s meant to be!

Discussion

AvidemuxFirst on the list is a great tool named Avidemux. Avidemux is a free open-source program designed for multi-purpose video editing and processing, which can be used on almost all known operating systems and computer platforms. Avidemux is my personal favorite because of its simplicity yet wide range of tools.

Avidemux lets you do just about everything under the sun. It supports many file types, including AVI, DVD compatible MPEG files, MP4 and ASF, using a variety of codecs. Avidemux is available for Linux, BSD, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows under the GNU GPL license.

VirtualDubVirtualDub is an impressive Open source package that is regularly updated by its author. Note that it doesn't handle some video formats like DVD or MP4. And like all video software, it needs a pretty fast PC. In the world of video editing VirtualDub has always been there. It's a very reliable program that with the right amount of knowledge can accomplish just about any task. VirtualDub is licensed under the General Public License (GNU), meaning you can use it for free.  No risk involved, and the whole source code is available if you want it.

The package is however not complete without the additional filters. A comprehensive collection of third party filters, 74 Filters for VirtualDub, is available from a French site. Just click on the "Download VD filters (1.72MB)" panel/button to download the complete set of filters (RAR pack). Once all the filters are installed, delete the "PCVideo Image Processor" filter, as the installation instructions are missing a step.

Pinnacle Video SpinAnother major contender in the world of video editors is a corporation named Pinnacle. Pinnacle is a software company that creates high quality video editing software for professionals and individuals alike. Recently they introduced a freeware program called Pinnacle VideoSpin.

The software itself is very flashy and contains many useful features. However, many features are blocked and even omitted in the free version. For this reason it is not my most highly rated software. But for the user who is just looking to do simple editing, the program works fine. It comes packed with many pre-installed titles and credits.

Next Update

More reviews to come about softwares you’ve never heard before (or may be you just never used them!) and it’s not going to be easy for them, ‘coz they are going to be tested to the core. We’re gonna see what they have and what they can do that others can’t.

These are some parameters that we’ll grade the softwares on:

  • Features
  • Usability
  • Performance
  • Speed

If you've have a software that you think is needed to be mentioned here then you're welcome to mail me, with subject "New Video Software:<Software Name>".

I need some software that will allow me to cut my large 3gb videos into two smaller ones that I can easily email. Any suggestions?

by Gourav Tewatia on 21. January 2012 - 7:20  (87524)

In which format you have that video you wanna edit?

For MP4, use Yamb.
For m2ts,ts use tsMuxer.
For MKV use MKV Merge GUI.

Avidemux is very good at editing a video if you are NOT Bothered about the AUDIO being in sync with the video. If you are you will find the audio WILL DEFINATELY not follow what anyone is saying

by Gourav Tewatia on 9. January 2012 - 16:08  (86888)

I haven't experienced sync problems using Avidemux. It's a nice software overall.

LIGHTWORKS

If you realy want to make a Pro Edit, use PRO EQUIPMENT, and then you use LIGHTWORKS (Free)
or pay a huge lot of money.

If you are editing family movies etc. you will succeed with most of this programs:
Windows Movie Maker - Avidemux - Virtualdub....

Academy Award-winning film editor Thelma Schoonmaker has edited every one of Martin Scorsese's movies, from Raging Bull to The Aviator.(on LIGHTWORKS.)

She won Oscars for her work on The Aviator and Raging Bull, and was nominated for her editing on Gangs of New York and Goodfellas.

Actually, I use Windows Movie Maker, and it won't import the files. Because it says that they don't exist, when I'm looking right at it.

by FFVIIImoviemaker (not verified) on 28. January 2012 - 19:56  (87951)

I use moviemaker too, have for years. But if your video files aren't wmv or mp-something it wont show up, and mp4 files will fail to import, even though you can see them. It's a huge pain, which is why I am looking for a new program. I tried finding a good converter fist but everything puts a watermark on my video after I convert it unless I pay $50. If you can find a converter though just use that. Ideally you want wmv files. Otherwise moviemaker is simple but great in my opinion.

by GRR (not verified) on 31. January 2012 - 23:13  (88112)

You are correct, I had a similar problems and the response given to you earlier was incorrect. The issue occurs with the 1st version of Win MovieMaker, it would not take my MP3 files even though it says it does. I was able to download from microsoft at no cost, the program, Audacity and this program converted to wave files and now it works fine and will load the audio files.

by Gourav Tewatia on 29. January 2012 - 14:15  (87987)

MovieMaker accepts any video file for which you have DirectShow Video Filters Installed. If Movie Maker is not accepting any video file that means you don't have appropriate CODECs installed in your system.

Please install one of the following according to your system specifications:

I need a video editing software that handles and produces high definition and QuickTime .mov video files where I can add narration while listening to the original video audio and retaining it along with my narration when done. I want to be able to do a photo slideshow on video, controlling the number of seconds each photo remains while also adding music and narration. I want to be able to extract pictures from videos to save to photo files. Finally, I want the video and audio to be in sync when in the video editor and also when produced and saved into a HD .mov video file in a folder on my computer.

by Gourav Tewatia on 3. January 2012 - 12:56  (86463)

There's no single software that can fill your needs. You'll have to use different software for your different purposes. If you do not want to buy a studio software I recommend you these:

  • Windows Live DVD Maker: Will help you make your slideshow, you can set time limit for each individual image and can also add music to that.
  • Audacity: To record narration.
  • VLC Media Player: Will extract your selected images from video file frame by frame.
  • AVI Demux: You can keep video and audio into sync using it.
  • FFmpeg: MOV container muxer.

You can select an intermediate format for output from these above software which will help you in editing videos fast and efficiently, I recommend "Apple ProRes 422". And in the end for the final output you can convert the result into H264 using x264 or anything else and finally mux video and audio using ffmpeg into mov container or you can use Quicktime to convert Apple ProRes 422 into H264 without encoding audio (it has an option PassThrough) and saving it into mov container.
I hope this helps. If there's anything else that you think I missed please point it out and I'll help you further.

Besides that, all the commentors are requested to please be specific while explaining everything clearly when they ask for any help and post here because when people write things in brief, it's hard for us to see their end and so our answers often are not exact.

No mention of the fact that VirtualDub can be improved by installing a program called AviSynth. It's script-based but greatly expands the possibilities for VirtualDub.

There's a huge filter pack (over 200 filters) for VirtualDub here:

Surprised FreeMake Video Convertor has not had a mention. Very capable editor and convertor to many formats. Also VideoPad is not free (functions will stop working after time despite what they make it look like on the download page)

Try Windows Live Movie Maker

To find it, you can just type in google or any other searchbox this and it will come up with a link at the top of the results page:

FREE PRO EDIT (chromakey etc..)

by Ruz (not verified) on 15. January 2012 - 22:26  (87220)

Is there a secret to password creation at Lightworks? I've tried all sorts of combinations of 6+-charactered upper and lower case letters with numbers and special characters included and nothing happens except for "invalid security code".

by Jahshaka (not verified) on 29. August 2011 - 15:24  (78571)

You could always try cinefx (formerly Jahshaka), as it is quite versatile to some extent. Previously there were not many tutorials on it, but now, there are quite a few on youtube.

I am looking for a movie editor - currently I use live movie maker. However a draw back I find is that it is a labour intensive process to split a long file into several shorter ones.

Currently I trim a section, save it, grab the full file, trim another etc etc.

Is there any other free programs that would allow me to create sections in one go and then save each as individual files?

Thanks

by Jojoyee on 24. August 2011 - 13:31  (78257)

Try AsfBinWin mentioned in Best Free Software to Split, Trim or Join Video Files if that's what you're looking for.

Looking at the comments here I discovered VideoPad. From what I have seen it is the best free video editor I have found. Certainly it leaves a lot to be asked for still, however.

by Abir (not verified) on 12. August 2011 - 16:02  (77539)

Thanks, I have download Blender video editor hope it will work. I will let you know.

by promytius (not verified) on 4. August 2011 - 16:11  (76911)

Thanks, great help! I tried VirtualDub, and you mis-led us a little: you said "Just click on the "Download VD filters (1.72MB)" panel/button to download the complete set of filters (RAR pack). Once all the filters are installed," -

well you skipped a lot of important stuff, the stuff between "download" and "installed"! There are 103 files in there, half of them folders, half files, but zero instructions that I can see. What do I do with all this stuff?
Thanks. Oh there's a file saying put a dll here, and one folder i opened said Here's how you construct this filter you just need this list of programs, and do this and that and then something else. Wow!

HOW does one acquire MSFT's movie maker???

I've been to their website only to find blog after blog re. this ... I've looked through their download pages with nary a mention of this ...

What I'm looking to do is to (1) combine a couple videos - I'm sure that's somehow possible, but don't know how; (2) add sound effects to a video - probably to upload to UTube - but the video is longer than the sound; without the sound it uploads fine, with the sound added, a block pops up stating not available for UTube viewing due to some error ???

I've also been attempting to understand these audio systems; I would like to find one which (1) can record playing MIDI files and also playing records {off-computer} so I can use these pieces again, not just listen to them. A couple times, I think I've gotten Audacity to record while the music is playing, then I am unable to do so again. If it was Audacity, then I need to have a step-by-step process to follow; if this program has changed, then I wish they'd revert back; if having WIN7 is causing the problem, then ??? - is BETA safe?

Hoping you great folks do have an answer; I wish I had the expertise to help this wonderful site, but with each day, I seem to fall further behind technologically ;-(
