Best Free Video Editor

In a Hurry?
Go straight to the Quick Selection Guide
Introduction

Video editing is something that is becoming ever more prevalent in our world today. A free and powerfull video editor is absolutely crucial; both to the aspiring young director, and the mom who just wants to save some old memories. Most retail video editors cost hundreds of dollars. What's more is that many of these programs are so complex that the average user has no idea how to use it. Thankfully, there are many free programs that can fill the need for any task.

There's many options in the world of video editing. Ever since it was possible to transfer videos from your pc to your computer, people and corporations began designing tools to cut and edit these videos. But our ever present challenge as frugal consumers is to find the perfect free tool that does the job!

Discussion

AvidemuxFirst on the list is a great tool named Avidemux. Avidemux is a free open-source program designed for multi-purpose video editing and processing, which can be used on almost all known operating systems and computer platforms. Avidemux is my personal favorite because of its simplicity yet wide range of tools.

Avidemux lets you do just about everything under the sun. It supports many file types, including AVI, DVD compatible MPEG files, MP4 and ASF, using a variety of codecs. Avidemux is available for Linux, BSD, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows under the GNU GPL license.

VirtualDubVirtualDub is an impressive Open source package that is regularly updated by its author. Note that it doesn't handle some video formats like DVD or MP4. And like all video software, it needs a pretty fast PC. In the world of video editing virtualdub has always been there. It's a very reliable program that with the right amount of knowledge can accomplish just about any task. VirtualDub is licensed under the General Public Liscense (GNU), meaning you can use it for free.  No risk involved, and the whole source code is available if you want it.

The package is however not complete without the additional filters. A comprehensive collection of third party filters, 74 Filters for VirtualDub, is available from a French site. Just click on the "Download VD filters (1.72MB)" panel/button to download the complete set of filters (RAR pack). Once all the filters are installed, delete the "PCVideo Image Processor" filter, as the installation instructions are missing a step.

Pinnacle Video SpinAnother major contendor in the world of video editors is a corporation named Pinnacle. Pinnacle is a software company that creates high quality video editing software for professionals and individuals alike. Recently they introduced a freeware program called Pinnacle Video Spin.

The software itself is very flashy and contains many usefull features. However, many features are blocked and even omitted in the free version. For this reason it is not my most highly rated software. But for the user who is just looking to do simple editing, the program works fine. It comes packed with many preinstalled titles and credits.

I have just downloaded a trial of trakAxPC. It seems so good that I brought the full version straight away. It is very cheap, but the free version is very good to use although some of the most handy features, as far as I am concerned anyway, are locked.

I have tried all the ones mentioned and I admit that I am too dumb to use them, but this kit was so easy to use and comes packaged with free video tutorials and I swear it has to go down as the easiest to use out of everything I have tried. Someone who knows about this stuff, please check it out and give us a better review of it that I am able to

You should include "Free Video Dub" in this test !!

by Anupam on Sun, 08/01/2010 - 16:17  (#55307)

Are you talking about video dub from DvdVideoSoft?

by Anonymous on Sun, 06/27/2010 - 14:13  (#53278)

Do any of these video editors have the ability to capture video from an integrated camera say on your laptop?

by Anonymous on Sat, 06/19/2010 - 15:58  (#52467)

it would have helped if you had mentioned before I went through all of the trouble of downloading and installing avidemux that it does not support fire wire capture. Major drawback that other software does not have. Next time you write another technical article how about including actual useful data: such as software limitations, instead of just raving about stuff. There's another hour of my life lost that I will never get back.

by MidnightCowboy on Sat, 06/19/2010 - 18:03  (#52473)

And I've just wasted 10 seconds of mine reading this.

by Anupam on Sat, 06/19/2010 - 16:25  (#52469)

Just because a simple detail was missed which was useful to you... does not mean that you rubbish the whole effort and hard work of the editor. People like you are ungrateful and unrespectful of others' efforts. Everything cannot be according to your terms, in life. One hour lost of your life... HA!!! Like you do not waste a single minute of your life. I am sure you must be wasting your life on many other things... like you did by writing an ungrateful post. Such comments are often deleted, because they are demeaning to our editors, for no reason at all... and people like you are the ones who complain later on.... that your comment was deleted.

by mikecorbeil on Tue, 07/13/2010 - 17:31  (#54211)

Not that I have to say, but figuratively speaking, I have to say that MidnightCowboy's and Anupam's replies to Anonymous #52467's post are responses of clearly [reasonable] people.

Well said.

Been using Avidemux for quite a while for cutting and splicing videos.

The QT interface has never worked for me though on windows 7. The GTK interface works with no problems.

Have any of the windows 7 users on here been able to get the QT interface to work?

by Anonymous on Mon, 06/14/2010 - 17:57  (#52102)

I think Microsoft Movie Maker belongs in this list here. I guess one can say that it's free because it comes with Windows XP. It is still out there to download and works great with Windows Vsta and 7 as well.

What I like about Movie Maker is its timeline base GUI. There is no more intutive way to edit movies I think. None of the above tools (as far as I can tell) offers that. Is there maybe another contender offering timline based editing?

by Anonymous on Thu, 06/17/2010 - 17:32  (#52336)

I have an editor named "Video Pad Editor" it's an NCH Software it has timeline editing but the free versoin has very limited transitions.

Also, you have to download the "special effects" seperately.

by sky1990 on Mon, 06/14/2010 - 18:54  (#52103)

I agree that movie maker is a good software but i don't really see the point of haveing it up here as you get it already on your pc when you buy it. I will be putting WAX, up on here soon witch i think is a good all round video editor.

by mikecorbeil on Tue, 07/13/2010 - 20:16  (#54216)

I just did a little searching for WAX. Softpedia has a download for WAX 2.0e, which was uploaded there in 2007, and Softpedia's link for the author's website is debugmode.com. That website says the most recent version of WAX is 2.0e and doesn't say when it was released, but one of the download links that website provides is at CNET download, where it says 2.0e was released and added there for download in July 2005.

Does that mean that it's not a well or regularly maintained app. or tool, or that it was already working without any bugs or flaws in July 2005?

I recently came across a facebook app called Cuemongous. It is an online video editor. Lets you edit pieces from multiple youtube videos, sequence them, and create your own new video that actually streams parts of the original video! Now, I just upload all my videos blindly into youtube and use the Cuemongous online editor to pick the pieces I want and create my own video instead of mucking around with MovieMaker or such. The app is called Cuemongous and is available on facebook.

I will have a look in to it and test it out thanks for the suggestion.

Is there a chroma key plugin available for NCH VideoPad?

by Anonymous on Mon, 04/19/2010 - 07:53  (#47950)

SUPER © is great for converting wmv/asf. Vdub never works well with these, even with the plugin or old/mod version.

by Anonymous on Sat, 03/27/2010 - 01:27  (#46268)

Let`s face it...there`s no really good free video editor that will do all the things you want it to do.

by Anonymous on Sat, 04/10/2010 - 05:57  (#47348)

Yes there is, it is called LiVES.

by Anonymous on Sun, 06/27/2010 - 03:04  (#53230)

Isn't LiVES for Linux only (no Windows version)?

by mikecorbeil on Tue, 07/13/2010 - 21:08  (#54221)

The Web site says LiVES can be installed on Windows and Mac, insteal of only Linux. The following quote is from the downloads page at lives.sourceforge.net.

"Windows and Mac (Intel) users

Windows and Mac (Intel) users can try out LiVES by downloading and burning a dyne:bolic bootable CD, and then installing the LiVES module. See here for more information. "

The instructions for installing the LiVES module on a Windows system, or Mac, are very simple and there aren't many steps; only a few. And "dyne:bolic ..." is hyperlinked to the website for downloading the ISO.

Softpedia has a download page for Dyne:bolic GNU/Linux 2.5.2 and the download link is for downloading from ftp.gnu.org.

by dave m (not verified) on Thu, 07/15/2010 - 04:36  (#54302)

I don't think booting linux from a CD and then running LiVES can be considered "running on Windows".

I use the free "Video Spin" by Avid/Pinnacle, for my home DV editing.

It's adware and crippled in some export formats. I use "Quick Media Converter" to get around that.

I used to do professional video editing with Avid software but sometimes a lighter product is better.

If all you want is cuts, fades, simple audio control -- then Video Spin might be good enough for you. It's a stable product and it's free!

Hi all,

There seems to be a lot of free video editing tools available, but I am a novice and have one simple wish - I want to stitch separate videos together to make one long video. I need something easy to understand that will just join all the files together. Any ideas? And thanks.

by Anonymous on Sun, 01/10/2010 - 16:27  (#40783)

I'm a novice myself, but I think you may find HJSplit what you're looking for. It does join video files.

by Anonymous on Wed, 03/25/2009 - 16:13  (#18536)

Avidemux for the win. I was mainly using it for simple editing and found it much easier for my purposes then Virtua Dub. I didn't think it could join video but a quick google led me to loads of tutorials and it does the job nicely.

If they are wmv files though Microsofts Movie Maker does the job very easily, you may have it installed.

by wculbertson on Tue, 03/17/2009 - 16:36  (#18040)

I have seen several reviews for various free video editors, but have not found one that has a specific function I need. I have a co-worker that gave me a camera to download the video from, and make a DVD movie. All went well, except that part of the time she held the camera sideways. This means to properly view the movie, you need to either lay down, or have your head cocked way over and end up with a very stiff neck afterward. Now for my need: is there any free video editor that would take a video clip and rotate it ninety degrees, either right or left; similar to the way a photo editor will?

If anyone knows of one, I would greatly appreciate knowing about it. Thanks.

by Anonymous on Tue, 02/09/2010 - 18:10  (#43184)

Avidemux (No.1 on this page) will rotate 90 degress...Video-Filters-Rotate

I haven;t tried Avidemux but i like videospin and probably will use videospin anyway, should i get Avidemux?

by Anupam on Tue, 03/17/2009 - 17:56  (#18047)

Please have a look here at the software:
http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/products/dvd/Free-Video-Flip-and-Rotate.htm

Its a freeware from DvdVideoSoft. I haven't tried the software myself, but it may serve your purpose. Give it a try, and please do share the results here.

Also, if you have further questions, posting in TechSupportAlert freeware forum, will be good :).

by wculbertson on Wed, 03/18/2009 - 14:36  (#18101)

Thanks for the suggested software. I tried it, and it works great, it is extremely easy to use. It definitely is what I needed. The only limitation I have found is the output format is limited to an avi, but I can live with that. I can always take the avi and convert it later. It will accept a lot of formats as input.

The site also has a lot of other free apps that look very interesting that I want to try when I have time, as well.

I apologize for posting my question in the wrong place. I guess I was too focused on my immediate problem to realize there was a forum to ask the questions in. I just registered, and put my question in the area I was interested in. I will go to the forum to see what is there.

Again, thanks for the advice.

by Anupam on Wed, 03/18/2009 - 15:28  (#18108)

Hii.. thanks for posting back. And great to hear that the program served your purpose. Yes, the site has many other nice freewares too.
Yeah, you can always convert the video to another format. If you need some names of freeware converters, do let know :).
And hey, no need to apologize... please. It was just an advice about posting in forums. Not meant to make u feel u did a mistake. Just wanted to let you know about the forums, that have just got a new look and started afresh :).
Take care buddy :)

VideoPad - it's more than "something to consider". I tried about 5 different video editors, all of them are similar to VideoDub; and the VideoPad is by far the most convenient for any kinds of job and the most illustrative. I strongly recommend at least to try it.
