Best Free Online Books For Kindle

Introduction

This is the most comprehensive listing of legal and free ebooks for the Kindle having over 150 sites that legally offer free Kindle ebooks. The links here provide all their works in Kindle compatible formats.  I did not include PDF works as many Kindle users complain that those do not display properly.

As of November 16, 2013, there are 81 sites listed that monitor Amazon for limited time free ebook offerings as well as 71 sites that offer Kindle compatible ebooks of their own.  There are also several links and tips on finding the many free ebook offerings from Amazon.

You do not have to have a kindle device to read kindle books.  A kindle application is available for every major smartphone, computer and tablet.   Additrionally, Amazon has a Kindle cloud reader available, so you do not have to use software or download the ebook to read (free registration and residency requirements).

A major source of free Kindle ebooks is Amazon.  These are generally only available to those residing in the countries where Amazon operates and free registration is required.

However, there are many other sources of free Kindle ebooks on the web, where no registration or residency requirements exist.

For a complete listing of the free ebook pages here at Gizmo's, see

A comprehensive alphabetical listing of free books for reading or listening can be found on these pages:

There will be other Kindle compatible ebooks at sites listed there, but on some sites not all of the listings are Kindle compatible.  The sites here have all their offerings in Kindle compatible formats.

This listing does not inlcude audio books and the audio books found at the pages above will generally all work within Kindle.

Also, if you just came here looking for free ebooks, I would suggest that you take a look at the rest of the site.  The free ebooks listings are a small part of the great information available here.  This site is mainly for review of free softwares.  Each of the reviewers is a volunteer and has a personal interest in their software category, so you will get an unbiased review from an enthusiast of that software type.  In almost all cases, a free software can do the task of any paid software just as well, if not better.

Amazon

There are many thousands of free ebooks at Amazon.  Finding them all can be confusing, but hopefully this article will help. As I live in the USA, and the Amazon USA site is the only one that I can search accurately, the links here are for the USA Amazon site.  However, using Jungle Search and  the hints here, you may use the information here for any of the Amazon sites.

Amazon Limited Time Offers (USA)   (UK)

I have set this at the top as this is the listing of free Kindle ebooks at Amazon that are only available for a limited time.  There are genre listings for these free listings in the left side of the page.  The number of free offerings varies, but appears to be over 200 free books at any given time.  At the time this article was created, there were 231 free ebooks listed.  Click on link above to access.

If you find a title you like, then grab it as these offers do expire.  There are sites that monitor Amazon for these free offerings listed below.

Amazon Best Sellers

Amazon also lists the 100 best selling ebooks in many of the genres available there.  In addition, they also list the best sellers (I assume most downloaded) that are free.  Some of the genres will have the full 100 and some will not, but this will get you to some more of the free Kindle ebook listings at Amazon.  Supposedly, these are updated hourly

On the left hand side is again a listing of various genres and by clicking on those you can get to the free listings for that genre.

I will give the basic ones that you can work from:

On each one of those, you will be able to navigate to sub-categories to find additional free Kindle ebook listings.

Amazon Free Popular Classics (USA)     (UK)

As the title says, this is Amazon's listing of free classic Kindle ebooks.  This is pretty much going to be the same batch as the public domain search through Jungle search, but should provide a way to access more of the over 15,000 free classics (again  due to the 400 page limitation).  Again, using the sort options should help to access more.  Click on link  above to access.

Amazon Price Low to High

You may also go to the regular Kindle ebook search at Amazon and use the sort option of Price Low to High to find futher free Kindle ebooks available.  I put up the basic links for this below.  Once you are at any of these links you may click on the departments, or genres, on the left and you will be taken to the Low to High sort page for that department or genre.

Jungle Search

Jungle Search is a search engine designed for searching at Amazon.  The link above is for the USA search, but they also have a search engine for France, Germany, United Kingdom and Canada (links at top of page).  I assume that if you are not in any of these countries, then Amazon will not be available to you and only the listings for your country will be available.  The information below is regarding the USA Amazon free Kindle eBooks.

Jungle search may be used to find free Kindle ebooks at Amazon by entering a 0 in both of the price range boxes on the Kindle Search tab.   If you enter the 0s and select the bottom option to include public domain works, you will be taken to a page which indicates that there are over 50,000 free Kindle ebooks at Amazon (first link below).

Unfortunately, I am unable to get the search results to go past page 400, which means all that may be accessed on any given search is maximum 4800 free Kindle ebook listings.   This is true for any of the searches where the resuls are greater than 4800.  I believe that there are over 50,000 free Kindle ebooks at Amazon and by using various different searches, you can get to view more of the total free Kindle ebook listings at Amazon.

I have thrown up a few different USA Amazon searches that will help to get started.  For each one, on the left there is a "Departments" listing, which is a category listing of the books.  By clicking on those you will be able to get to more of the free listings.  Also, for each of these and each of the Department listings, there are "Sort" options in the upper right of the page.  By using the various sort options, you will be able to see more of the free listings.

First some variations of the combination of Public and Non-Public Domain free listings:

Similar links for Public Domain only free listings:

And the same for Non-Public Domain free listings:

There are many other options to use with Jungle Search, including reader ratings and  age (from baby to teen) as well as various sort options.  If any of you have a favorite way to access more of the free Kindle ebook listings through Jungle Search, please post the resulting page at Amazon and what you entered at Jungle Search in the comments below and I will immoratilize you in this section.

Open Library claims to have over 1 million free ebooks available.  Many of the ebooks available are offered in the many different version which were published.  So the same novel may available in quite a few different versions.  So they may not have 1 million different novels available, but they sure do have a lot.  Every version of every novel that I looked at was available for MOBI download, as well as having a "Send to Kindle" option.  (they are also available in other formats)

Open Library (Classic Cookbooks) Antilope a poster at the cooking.com fora, has put together a great list of links to cookbooks from the late 1800s and early 1900s.  The links go to a read in your browser format.  In the upper left hand corner is a link to go to Open Library, where you will have the MOBI download and the Send To KIndle option mentioned above.  The forum site is no longer up, so this link now takes you to the Wayback Machine image of the page.  All links from the page are still working.  Thanks to Bast for the update on this site.

Passica  a forum with postings of several hundred classic works available for free download.  The vast majority are available in Kindle compatible formats of MOBI etc.  There are also sections for Kindle apps and Kindle help.  Thanks to John45 for suggesting this site.

ProjectGutenberg (USA) has many thousands of public domain works available in their mobile read section.  All of these are available in a free Kindle compatible format (from what I saw the Kindle ebooks were all MOBI format).  There may also be free Kindle compatible eBooks available elsewhere on Project Gutenberg as they offer all their works in a variety of download formats and this lising may not contain all the Kindle compatible eBooks.

Providence Baptist Ministries  has 56 free Christian themed ebooks available for free download in MOBI wihout registration.

Retro Read offers the free public domain books at Google Books in Kindle compatible MOBI format.  They will convert a listing for you, but also have a large offering of already converted books available for immediate free download.

Rifters offers 4 of Peter Watts novels for free download in PRC.  Click on the image of the novel cover to see the download link.

SF Book Reviews has 24 free ebooks available for free download in MOBI without registration.  These are all science fiction themed.   Some are classics and some are newer works, with a few unique entries not found elsewhere.

SF Signal monitors Amazon for limited time free ebook offerings in its Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror genres.  Also monitors other sites for free ebook offerings in those genres.  All appeared to have Kindle compatible downloads.

Small Beer Press offers 5 free novels, under creative commons license, for free download in a variety of formats, including MOBIPocket.

Smashwords has a very large collection of free ebooks from independent authors and publishers.  These are available for download in a wide variety of formats, including Kindle (MOBI)

The Plough offers a good sized collection of free Christian books in Kindle (PRC) format.  Link fixed thanks to Geert

The Tibetan Drum  this story of a man's spiritual journey across the globe is available for free download for free download in MOBI without registration.

Walking By The Way a very impressive listing of free ebooks for children for the Kindle from various sites on the web.  Information on the appropriate age group for the various offerings is given.

Zane Grey Books  nice collection of Zane Grey novels, most of which are available for free download in Kindle compatible MOBI without registration.

Zen Beast lists both classic and recently released free ebooks at Amazon.  They also post free magazines, newspapers and blogs.  There are some ebooks that cost money mixed into the results, but they are easily identified.  Thanks to Leon Finch for this listing.

ZooAlert   offers a search similar to Jungle Search for free ebooks at Amazon (USA).  This search allows searching in a large number of categories and is very quick.

Libraries

During my searches online, many of  the results returned were for local libraries offereing free Kindle ebooks.  Many of  these offered a direct sync to a Kindle device (no visit to the library necessary).  You will have to have a valid library card to use these services.  This is a resource that may well be worth checking out.

Overdrive is the site to use to access your library online for free Kindle ebooks.  It will help you find a branch near you that has this feature.  You must have a valid library card and PIN.  If you are using a Kindle device, then you must be on a wi-fi and not the 3G network.  Some more information on this at Amazon Help:  Public Library Books For Kindle.  This service may also be used if you have Kindle software and not a device.  These downloads go through Amazon, so the restrictions mentioned at the begining of this article apply.

Groovypost has a guide on using Overdrive to check out books at your local library which looks to be verry useful.

Conclusion

Hopefully this listing will help you in easily finding free ebooks that you are interested in for your Kindle device or application.  If you have any suggestions as to additional sites, techniques or how to make this guide clearer, please post in  the comments section below.

To those who post a thanks in the comments, I do not post back as this spreads the comments out.  However, I do read every comment posted and do appreciate the thanks.  So I will say here to those who post a thanks:  Thank you.  I appreciate that.

Could you please add our two sites

1) Kindle Free Book Search - www.freebookssearch.com

2) Cover View Curated Lists - http://www.zerofrictionbooks.com/free/today/

thank you very much.

by CrankyBird on 12. February 2014 - 18:19  (114432)

I didn't see this one in your list.

http://freebooks.ontheknob.com/

Books on the Knob has links to non-public domain, non-”sample”, free Kindle eBooks from Amazon, grouped by publisher type.
Selections are updated daily.
Some categories may not have books.
Clicking on one of these categories Traditional Publishers , Small Publishers , Backlist / Sidelist / Indie , Christian Publishers , Erotica / LGBT / Hot Romance shows the books available.

I tried one and it worked fine.
I was sent to Amazon's kindle page for the ebook and it was free.

by mr6n8 on 13. February 2014 - 0:20  (114438)

Thanks

Books on the Knob used to be in the listing, but their main site switched to only bargain books after a policy change at Amazon. I do not know if I missed this offshoot or it just came up.

Anyways, it is a good resource and I will add it in on next update.

Thanks again

November 16, 2013, 16 new sites added, 1 link removed due to bad WOT rating and two links fixed. All links here checked and working. There are now 154 sites listed.

I use LinkChecker to check page links and no longer visit each site individually to reconfirm. So, if you find a site that is not as it should be, then please post here in the comments.

If you know of a site to be added to this listing, please post here in the comments.

If you are the owner of a site that you would like added to this listing, it is better to contact me through the site (click on mr6n8).

Also, no site that has an orange or red rating from WOT (Web of Trust) may be added to this listing, per site rules. So please check the WOT rating before posting.

Thanks

First of all, thank you for so much hard work. My Kindle was given to me by a family member in Hong Kong and therefore is linked to Amazon in the USA.

I am a pensioner, a voracious reader and but for the free books would by now have faced financial ruin. However, I also read French, German, Dutch and Spanish and would like to be able to download free books in these languages.

Can anybody tell me of sites that might offer this facility - without changing the identity of my Kindle?

Many thanks for any advice.

by mr6n8 on 29. October 2013 - 12:44  (111858)

Because I am not fluent in those languages, I can not fully advise on available sites as I do not know if the sites are only offering legal works.

However, I can give you some links to free ebooks within Amazon USA. (I have set for sort low to high - if the link does not come out that way, you can reset) Since this is through Amazon, we can assume all are legal.

French

German

Spanish

I found the Dutch page, but there were no free offerings. There are some free ones for Italian and Portuguese, but I did not list as they were not listed by you.

Another known clean site, Books Should Be Free, has both audio and Kindle (among others) works in French, German, Spanish and Dutch (several others also)
http://www.booksshouldbefree.com/language-menu

Gutenberg has French and other languages including the 3 others you requested
http://www.gutenberg.org/browse/languages/fr

Probably some of the sites listed in the article also have foreign language titles. You would have to check them.

Also, a search for free kindle books french (or one of the others) will reveal some sites. But, you would have to be careful on the results. If you do not have Web of Trust or something similar, then I suggest you check some of the other articles here, especially on Web Browsers and addons.

Hopefully these known legitimate offerings I have listed will keep you busy for quite some time.

Thank You for Your Hard Work in finding these sites for e-books. I am going to pass this list to my Grand Children hoping they will read some of these titles on their family i-pad. Thanks Again...

Great job, mr6n8! This was (is) a LOT of work. I've downloaded 10 books already. 5 *'s, Thank you!

by mr6n8 on 10. July 2013 - 20:20  (109108)

It definitely has grown into more work than I originally thought, but the nice part is I pick up some nice free ebooks each time I update and I am reading more than ever.

Glad you are finding some ebooks you like. Enjoy.

And thanks for the thanks.

Also, I will be leaving soon for a month long camping trip and will not be able to monitor the site as I usually do. So I may not be able to respond immediately to your posts.

If you have a site to be listed or info on sites listed, please continue to post as I will update when I have a chance.

Information from users allows me more time to search for new sites and is greatly appreciated.

Found your site when some of my favorites disappeared due to the new rules at Amazon (I deeply miss ereaderiq). Since I just went through your list, there are some others that appear to have bitten the dust as they are no longer updating:

AddAll Ebooks
Dan's Tool Shed
ereaderIQ
free zombie books
I Read Review
Kindle eBook Deals
KinLib.US
New Daily Free eBooks
The Cheap
The Vessel Project

It would be great if you would add:

http://indieheart.com/free-kindle-ebooks

Five daily hand-picked books by Indie authors (fiction only). There is a free books newsletter that is not loaded with ads (no ads at all) like some of the other sites that are trying to stay alive. There are also reviews of Indie Books and "The Reader's Blog" which just covers general stuff for readers who enjoy reading Indie books.

Thanks!

Jill

Thank you very much for this info. It really helps to keep this page relevant. Putting them in alphabetical order also helped me.

Indieheart will be added when I fix the below (hopefully later today)

I checked these out as follows (notes are really for me as I can not update right now):

AddAll Ebooks DEAD
Dan's Tool Shed DEAD
ereaderIQ Offers an abbreviated list of freebies
free zombie books DEAD
I Read Review Moved to new site
Kindle eBook Deals DEAD
KinLib.US Has been saying they are coming back for a while so DEAD
New Daily Free eBooks DEAD
The Cheap DEAD
The Vessel Project Moved to a section with both free and reduced price

Thanks again - you have saved me a lot of time on this.

Hi Steve - me again. :D

This one: Open Library (Classic Cookbooks) Antilope a poster at the cooking.com fora, has put together a great list of links to cookbooks from the late 1800s and early 1900s. The links go to a read in your browser format. In the upper left hand corner is a link to go to Open Library, where you will have the MOBI download and the Send To KIndle option mentioned above.

just goes to the URL: http://www.cooking.com/recipes-and-more/social-media/#axzz2P52HKcWM

which is a page for joining Cooking.com's facebook and other social media - I could not locate their forums.

by mr6n8 on 1. April 2013 - 0:10  (106715)

Yeah it looks like they closed the forum down. I tried a couple links and they went to the same page you got.

I have put up the page from the "Wayback Machine" at the Internet Archive.

The links still work.

Not sure how long they will keep it, but it looks like they keep these pages for a good while.

Thanks again.

by Bast on 31. March 2013 - 2:49  (106684)

Books on the Knob no longer offers free books:

This page has been removed to comply with Amazon's new policy: no free books may be mentioned by an Amazon Associate or they risk losing all income for that month and possibly forever.

http://blog.booksontheknob.org/p/free-kindle-books.html

by mr6n8 on 31. March 2013 - 11:16  (106691)

Thanks for that. I have removed it.

I am surprised more of the sites have not changed due to the new Amazon policy. Strange move by Amazon.

It makes it much easier for me to find new sites when people (like yourself) let me know about site changes.

Thanks again

Steve

by Bast on 31. March 2013 - 23:44  (106712)

You're welcome, Steve! I'm glad to help in a small way.

March 22, 2013, 15 new sites added and all links checked and working.

I use LinkChecker to check page links and no longer visit each site individually to reconfirm. So, if you find a site that is not as it should be, then please post here in the comments.

Great article.

Any chance you can add the UK variations to the Amazon links?

by mr6n8 on 3. March 2013 - 15:04  (105905)

I think I got all of the Amazon links for UK in there now.
