Best Free Note Taker
+
Springpad

What use to be a good note taking program has morphed in full-ledged collaborative tool similar to Evernote early this year. So what's the difference? In Evernote's favor, it downloads your notes so they can viewed when you are offline; Springpad requires you be Internet connected but doesn't cap your data transfer to 60MB/month like Evernote does. Springpad has a nicer user-interface and can scan barcodes. Share your notes on social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and email. Both are great apps, try both and decide what works best, or use both!

Can't access Wikihood. Trying from US.

by reidthaler on 13. March 2014 - 16:20  (114994)

Bummer. You're right. Site say it is only available in the U.K. iTunes store, but I can't access it there either. Can someone check this for me? Thanks,

by Geert on 12. March 2014 - 11:39  (114958)

From the website of Pandora: ... we can no longer allow access to Pandora for listeners located outside of the U.S., Australia and New Zealand.
Maybe you could mentioned an alternative app (eg. Jango Radio Mobile) for the people not living in U.S., Australia and New Zealand.

by reidthaler on 12. March 2014 - 15:10  (114961)

Thanks for the suggestion. I just added it!

Apple has pulled AppShopper from the App Store, "for now" supposedly. Ref: http://appshopper.com/blog/2012/12/20/appshopper-app-removed-from-the-ap...

by reidthaler on 7. April 2013 - 0:39  (106865)

Thanks. I'll revise this soon.

For a to-do/ GTD app, Reqall looked promising a few yrs ago, but it hasn't been updated since 2010.

A few free ones that have great (but different) feature sets and design, and are regularly updated:

Producteev: (free for individuals) http://www.producteev.com/home.php (They have recently merged with Jive Software, and are promising a huge update very soon)

Astrid: http://astrid.com/

Any.DO: http://www.any.do/

Asana : (free for individuals) http://asana.com

by reidthaler on 11. March 2013 - 6:28  (106114)

Hey, great minds think alike! I had been planning on replacing Reqall with Any.DO.

Thanks for your thoughts!

In search of my holy grail:

An App that meshes contacts and agenda (like I had in my nokia)

What I'm looking for: When I receive a call, to be able to automaticaly setup an appointment (with contact data from the caller) and have that appointment linked to the contact..... Is it something so dificult????

by lbtoy on 22. February 2013 - 15:29  (105661)

Re: Grocery IQ - reviews are very bad since last update. Average 4 star rating is deceptive.

by reidthaler on 11. March 2013 - 6:30  (106115)

What issues are you having? I still hate the chartreuse interface, but at least I can organize my lists by aisle, and the font is small enough to have many items on one screen, but not too small that I can't read them easily.

by weildcard on 1. February 2013 - 2:33  (105001)

Thanks very much for the list!!! VERY helpful. In particular, PhotoSynth and FileApp I am very very happy with, and doubt I would have found without this list.

One other app I have found ASTONISHINGLY good for a free app is Free Graphing Calculator by William Jockusch. (Link below.) This should go in the "education" section.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/free-graphing-calculator/id378009553?mt=8

I've been using it for months and I just keep finding new features!

Speak it Free iphone app lanched today

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/speak-it/id545912848?mt=8

Speak it speaks out the contents of your emails, tweets and facebook feed. Have it read to you while you are on the road or are otherwise busy.

Speak it gives you full control. You determine which accounts you want read out to you, how many items, and how fast the speech should be.

Speak it remembers your login details so you only have to login to your accounts once, and you can hear Speak it read out the contents of your email box, facebook or twitter feed whenever you want.

Speak it also allows you to enter free text, either by typing it or copy/paste from any other application. So you can basically speak out any text you want.

I recommend this Timeline Eons app, a graphic representation of the entire natural and human history:

by reidthaler on 17. September 2012 - 16:45  (99392)

I've downloaded and played with it a bit. Looks like I'll be included in my next update.

by Greatbloke (not verified) on 2. August 2012 - 7:33  (97089)

Thanks for your efforts in doing the list. Mapquest doesn't seem to be available in the Australian app shop.

by reidthaler on 17. September 2012 - 16:44  (99391)

Sorry Mapquest isn't available. If you upgrade to iOS 6 in few days when it's available, the default map program will be much improved, offering 3D views and voice navigation.

by Michael Fisher (not verified) on 16. July 2012 - 18:14  (96288)

There are so many good calculator apps. I have tried many and currently have 16 calculator apps on my iPhone.
The one I have settled on is HiCalc which has features like RPN, Unit Converter, Base conversion, etc. It also doesn't try to put it all on the screen at the same time.

HOT TIP
I originally hated the default calculator because it didn't have a backspace key, that is why I started researching other calculator apps.
Recently I discovered that backspace is a right to left swipe across the default calculator's display area.

by reidthaler on 19. July 2012 - 17:22  (96406)

Michael,

Thanks for the tip on the default calculator. I found it strange that that default calculator didn't have percentage in the vertical orientation.

Nothing for Security or Privacy?

by reidthaler on 19. July 2012 - 17:17  (96405)

What specifically are you referring to? I've included Find My Phone. Security? Lock your phone with the pass code. I really don't know what else you want.

by BillK (not verified) on 20. July 2012 - 7:29  (96431)

Think pc security and privacy software.
How much of that is applicable to the iPhone?
Like apps that take location information without asking permission?
Removing tracking cookies?
Adblock app for iPhone?
Antivirus and antispyware apps?
etc. etc.

by reidthaler on 17. September 2012 - 16:51  (99393)

I don't' know if this will help, but you could try Permissions http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/permissions/id535720736?mt=8

✔ "finds and fixes all your privacy settings" - MSNBC

✔ "Have 2 Minutes? Check Out Who Has Access to Your Social Media Accounts" - Mashable

✔ "See what programs and services can borrow your keys [...] and think carefully and skeptically to decide if they still deserve that privilege." - USA Today

✔ "Finding the permissions pages can be tricky, but the nice folks at MyPermissions made a handy dashboard linking to every one" - Wired

facebook. The one app I cannot live without.

Tonido. The absolute best file sharing/productivity app out there. Instead of multiple copies of files like dropbox, you access your always-on computer from anywhere. works on virtually every OS out there. http://www.tonido.com/

NinJump Deluxe Free. One of the most addicting games out there. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ninjump-deluxe-free/id516761043?mt=8

Shazam. What song is that? Shazam it and you will know.

[Moderator's note : Apps without links deleted. Please post links. Link for Tonido changed to point to its home page. Link for NinJump changed to point to the free version on the iTunes app site.]

by reidthaler on 21. June 2012 - 20:31  (95208)

I'll look into those. I don't know that Tonido is an improvement over Dropbox if your computer must always be on.

Tell me why you think Instagram is the best. What is it best at?

Thanks for the game recommendation. I'm least familiar with game apps, so I'll take all the help I can!

Thanks, I'll revise this list soon. Why they changed their name from something descriptive and useful to clothing apparel is strange...
