Introduction

Welcome to the first addition to my original reviews.  I'm Reid J. Thaler, (bio below) the new iPhone App Reviewer.  I really want this "Best Free iPhone App" section to be a community space, so if you know of an app that you like and want others to know of too, please let me know! (with iTune links, please).  I only have two eyes, but collectively, we have thousands!

So what makes a great iPhone app?  Simple elegance in what it does, unique ability to access the net, or utilize and manage your data, and of course, a design that's easy to navigate, visually appealing, and adds ease or joy to your life.

Below are apps that do all or most of those things.  After using an iPhone for two years, I've learned that lots of things are just easier to do on the iPhone and it's great always having it near.  If you are just starting to use an iPhone, I hope this list gets you up to speed with a lot of really great tools.  If you are a seasoned iPhoner, I hope I can share some new apps that make your visit worthwhile.  As I said, let me know if you've found a great app.  Some (apologetically) may only work in the United States.  If that's the case, let me know so I can note it.

So again, I'm trilled and excited to be the editor.  Let's have a great time here!

You can easily find the apps you like with the Quick Select Index and use one of the following ways to install the apps from the list.

Quick Access to App Store:

  • In iPhone's browser, tap a program title below to go the App Store, tap the "FREE" button and then the "INSTALL APP" button. Or
  • In PC's browser, click a program title below to go to iTunes Preview and click "View in iTunes", then download the program within iTunes and sync to your iPhone.

+ This plus sign is attached to the logo of an app which is designed for the iPhone and iPod touch, and also runs natively on the larger screen of the iPad. See also Best Free iPad Apps.

This is a great list. Thank you for the information. I was very excited to finally find an intelligent summary of usable ios apps. BTW HDR Foto is no longer free (.99 now) And also maybe a Cydia/Jailbreak list, for beginners, in the future?

by reidthaler on 7. May 2012 - 21:01  (93186)

Thanks! I'll be revising this list soon and remove HDR Foto. Since I don't have a jailbroken phone, I have no way of testing apps, sorry.

by supanut on 19. February 2012 - 12:19  (89047)

iFile Explorer, free file manager that lets you transfer files. I've tried it, and it is way better than File App, the only bad thing is that there's advertisements for its similar products.

by reidthaler on 3. March 2012 - 7:11  (89846)

iFile Explorer does look promising. Thanks! I've just downloaded it. Would like to know how this would work better/different than Dropbox. Perhaps support for viewing certain file types? Keep me posted!

by Dobry (not verified) on 26. January 2012 - 12:15  (87826)

An excellent to-do-reminder app which is better, I believe, than SeizeTheDay, is Errands. It has no advertising and has all the things one could require in such an app. Everything is presented in a very well arranged manner, and the app has as a choice to manually order list items (if one desires), which few apps have.

by Dlira (not verified) on 30. January 2012 - 22:06  (88057)

Agree - Errands is very good! I would have replaced SeizeTheDay in this list with Errands because of the advertising i SeizeTheDay. Another very good one is Wunderlist, but my choice is Errands.

by reidthaler on 3. March 2012 - 6:57  (89845)

The interface of Errands just doesn't have the right feel for me. I'm glad you like it, and thanks for posting and letting other know of it. After a point, especially with listing apps, personal appeal can be as swaying as the feature set.

"Best Free Voice Navigation" is not available in Australia, and not accessible to Australians through American iTunes. I'm guessing it only has USA or North American maps anyway.

I highly recommend NavFree which has different versions for different countries, a number of which I've used on my iPad, including Australia, the UK and Switzerland.

by reidthaler on 3. March 2012 - 6:52  (89843)

Sorry that not all nav apps are work world wide. I'm downloading Navfree, but it'll take a while--416 MBs! Oops it's only for UK & ROI, others will have to weigh in. I'm in California.

I'd Agree with Navfree being a great Alternative. I have used it for about a year and always found it accurate & Reliable. However i have now switched to Waze which is still early in development but is showing promise of being an awesome app with some really great Navigation features with the added bonus of Speed cams & Speed trap notifications as well as free traffic updates in a user information shared basis

I really like weather snitch (free version). it has just about any weather info you could ever need, including month, week, day, & hourly views.

Thanks. I'll take a look. The user interface looks a bit sparse, but the app may have some good offerings.

Some useful apps. I provided links for each of these, but the site will not accept the posting if they are included, saying that the spam filter has been triggered.

AppsGoneFree – a daily list of apps that have gone free that day.

AppAdvice – a huge list of recommended apps, both free and paid. This app is free in the month of December.

AeroWeather Lite – the weather predictions pilots use at airports around the world. No advertisements.

Air Turbulance Forecast. Not actually an app. See the projected turbulence along your route anywhere in the world. Go to Safari and make the site an icon on the iPhone “desktop”.

CarRentals.com Works very quickly and accurately.

TideDataFree – works well, but USA only.

WordWeb – dictionary, thesaurus, word history, words and phrases containing the word for nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc. No advertisements.

Calculator+. Has ribbon. The display organization is the best I have seen. No advertisements.

Moon Globe – a virtual globe with an incredible display of the moon from far and near, named craters, voyages to, and so forth. No advertisements.

Mars Globe – like Moon Globe. By the same producers. No advertisements.

Mooncast – tells the phrase of the moon, today or in the future. Simple app that works well. No advertisements.

Day and Night World Map – shows the current distribution of light and dark over the globe. No advertisements.

XE Currency – currency convertor – Very nice layout and reasonable color scheme.

MultiConvert – a unit convertor. There are many units convertors but most suffer from a poor presentation of the units and conversions. This has the best I've seen, and it also converts currencies in real time. No advertisements.

Emerald Time – an extremely accurate clock, almost atomic clock percision. No advertisements.

Multi Plumb Bob – accurate and attractive. No advertisements.

Multi Protractor – accurate and attractive. No advertisements.

iSeismometer – very interestingly graphs the incredible sensitivity of the accelerometers in the iPhone. It also functions as the best motion sensitive alarm I have seen. No advertisements.

Safe Note Free – a password protected notebook. The free version allows only five notes, but the notes have no length limitation. A simple, safe place to keep private data.

Battery Master Free – keeps track of battery charge state. Same as the paid version.

AccuWeather – weather apps are clearly a matter of taste. This one allows easy switching between locations. The paid version is no different – just advertisement free.

Hipmunk – flight search. A simple and superior presentation of the results. Try it on the internet first to more easily see how it functions. On the internet it has tabbed searches; on the iPhone it accomplishes the same by keeping a running history of searches.

The the license agreement for Business App "Dragon Dictation" states it is not for commercial use.

by reidthaler on 17. December 2011 - 19:28  (85200)

Well, then, the obvious answer is don't use it for commercial use! This list is generally oriented for individuals, not business owners,

Best Value appears to not be available in the iTunes store in the US. Perhaps the link is broken?

by reidthaler on 12. December 2011 - 15:09  (84893)

Thanks for the update. I've noted it. I live in the US, and got it here. Maybe it will come back.

Just a small correction - "Fractal Plus" is in fact Fractile Plus. If, like I did, you go to the App Store direct from the phone it doesn't find the mis-named app.

by reidthaler on 12. December 2011 - 15:06  (84892)

Thanks. I had it right the first time when I was drafting the article.

Please update the description for Atomic Web Browser Lite: it now shows the description for the Remote Control app, instead.

Oops! Thanks for catching this. I revised it.

Impossible to find what regions are covered by mapquest, or whether it requires a data connection from the website. Try Navfree instead (http://www.navmii.com/navfree/), covers UK, USA and Canada (curiously Canada is not listed on the download page although I have it), with more to come. Map data is downloaded so no data connection is necessary other than for the search capability

by reidthaler on 4. November 2011 - 0:14  (82680)

Good point. Maybe I'll break it into two categories, online and offline navigation.
