Introduction
|
|
We have seen many image file types, but probably the most popular and widely used ones on the Web are JPG, PNG and GIF formats. Among these three formats, GIF is the only file type that supports animation. A GIF file can contain a single image, but an animated GIF file will need to have two or more images or frames combined, with each of them to be displayed for a few centi-seconds successively.
On the right is an animated GIF image of Newton's Cradle, comprising 36 frames and each showing up for about 2 to 5 centi-seconds. It's certainly more impressive than a static image if motions are needed in an image to convey more vivid messages to readers. With one of these free GIF animators in this review, hopefully you'll find it handy for creating an animated GIF file for yourself too. |

GIF Animator for Photos or Images
On the Animated GIF tab, you can select a few photos or images in various formats and drag them to the center panel, your animated GIF is then live and instantly displayed for you. Click the save button, give a file name and the animated GIF file is done. On the frame strip, you can re-order the frames by drag and drop, or right-click a frame to change its display time. On the right panel, you can also adjust the canvas size, background color and photo alignment. You can even change the transition effect to sliding a frame and the program will automatically add necessary frames to that effect for you, but of course this will increase the GIF file size. |
|
From your file folder you can drag and drop multiple GIF files to the frame panel, then select looping and repeat, and set delay duration to each frame before saving to a new animated GIF file. You can also easily re-order frames by pressing the up/down buttons. If you need more advanced features, settings are available for animation width and height, border, undraw method, transparency and so on. That said, I find the user interface of the program rather small and its window cannot be maximized. It can be frustrating for users who are working on a GIF file consisting of more frames. NB This program is no longer available from the Microsoft Download Center but is available at third party download sites. |

GIF Animator for Icon ImagesBesides the above programs, if you're looking for software which is designed for working with icons and would like to create animated icon images, Greenfish Icon Editor Pro is worth a try. It is designed for dealing with icon images, and treats adding new images as adding a new icon frame to an animated GIF.
Stick Figure AnimatorAnd for a great deal of fun, try Pivot Stickfigure Animator, a simple stick figure animation program for you to create an animated GIF by moving sections of the standard stick figure. See this article A Free Animation Utility That can be Used by the Non-Artistic by Gizmo for more details. |

Online GIF AnimatorsThese are online GIF animators which allow you to upload images to create and download the animated GIF file, without the need to install any program.

- Article type:
Making an animator GIF file is much easier than you would think with help of a GIF animator. You take a couple of images you like, put them in sequence, the animator will then combine them into one GIF file, together with your settings for the frame rate, looping, repeat and so on.

i am happy to find a website that you can get for free
I've used Gimp before for Gifs but I find it too complicated and cumbersome.
I'd rather have a small app to handle one thing.
That's why I'd like to point you guys towards UnFREEz which is a tiny little portable application which does one thing and one thing well and that's make Gifs.
And best of all, it's free!!
http://www.whitsoftdev.com/unfreez/
Ps: It works in Wine and that makes me a happy monkey. :P
Here's another MS Gif Animator download link http://www.jhepple.com/gif_animator.htm that doesn't require the use of a proprietary installer like Cnet.
Thanks for the good info Steveorg. Now updated.
Just wanted to let everybody know that Falcon GIF Animator comes with TWO KINDS OF SPYWARE, and doesn't even work all that well.
Greenfish, on the other hand, is pretty awesome.
Thanks for your comment. Falcon's site is red WOT rated. It will now be removed from the article.
Edit : Fixed now, along with another software which was rated red WOT.
All I want is a free animator with the fade-into option! This one has fade to white/black/bg color.. sliding up/down/left/right. Whatever I download either is a trial version, wont work properly, or - in this case - doesn't even have a fade option :S Anyone know the name of a decent Animator??? Thanks.
Been using Photoscape for a few years now, excellent, quick and easy for Gifs, but as stated it has so much more.
For me definitely a 5*
Oh, and I suppose there's Gifsicle, but that's a command-line utility and not the easiest thing to use. (Yes, it's principally a Linux utility, but there's a Windows port as well.)

It baffles me that after all these years people are still recommending the Microsoft GIF Animator. There is an excellent promotional opportunity here for anyone to release a quality free GIF animator and gain wide recognition.
You might add that the MS GIF Animator doesn't support optimization of any kind, though I suppose with today's bandwidth that's not as important as it used to be. You see, it can remarkably decrease the size of an animated GIF if each frame contains only the elements that have changed from the last frame. I suppose you can always use Trout's GIF Optimizer spearately.

This GIF Optimizer is better than Trout's and it contains no Ad banner.

The second sentence of this article is just flat not true. "Among these three formats, GIF is the only file type that supports animation."
PNG has from the very beginning always supported animation. However, I forgive you if you were under the wrong impression because your BROWSER does not support PNG animation. (Might you per chance be using Chrome?)
PNG has a lot of advantages over GIF (and the other image formats as well)

Sadly, until all browsers support all of PNGs features (read Chrome get on the ball), it may be a good idea still to avoid PNG animations on websites where you need EVERYONE to see the animation rather than just the first frame.
I'm afraid that you've mistaken PNG for MNG.
"PNG itself does not support animation at all. MNG is an extension to PNG that does."

Pivot Stickfigure Animator
Pivot Stickfigure Animator is a unique software, that allows you to create stick figure animations easily and without any artistic skills. You can move the sections of the sick figure and easily create a chain of animation frames that can be previewed as you go. You can use more than one stick-figure in the animation, and even create your own stick figures using an easy to use visual editor that lets you assemble objects out of lines and circles. In addition, you can optionally set animation size, speed and more. The result can be saved as animated GIF file. Fun and easy to use, surprisingly well featured.
Thanks Oana, this software has been reviewed by Gizmo here. It works quite differently from the rest and is now added under the sub-title "Stick Figure Animator" in this article, with a link to Gizmo's review for cross reference.
This is "My" List
UnFreeze
Gickr
Picasion
Beneton Movie GIF
Falco GIF Animator
GifNinja
Greenfish Icon Editor Pro
Photoscape
Hope this helps! :-)
That's an impressive list. Thanks a lot. This category presently does not have an editor. If you would like to take it up, then please contact MidnightCowboy :).
Seems that Photoscape is rather nice, it has also Estonian language in it. That's great because I'm tired of those English because I am Estonian.
PhotoScape has a very nice GIF animator built in.
UnFreez is good
Beneton Movie GIF gave my XP system fits, causing intermittent crashes when using the program. Still, it looked like a very good system. I believe Photoscape offers a basic GIF animation too, though I could be incorrect.
GIMP has gif animation capabilities
