I would suggest PySolitaire, a port of a Linux game pack to Windows. It has many Solitaire/Patience card games as well as many Mahjongg variations. You need to have the Python run times installed. http://sourceforge.net/projects/pygames/files/

I haven't been able to get PySolitaire to work on my XP SP3 system---it just won't start up. However, PySol FC (also available at Sourceforge) is a simple install from an .exe file, and works great. It's card oriented rather than Mahjongg oriented, but it does have nice-looking, free Mahjongg and I find it a lot of fun.

This site:

[remove the breaks]

...shows the real game, it's a gambling site but there you go. If you click the Learn The Game icon near the top left, it has a good run-through of basic gameplay. This is real mahjongg not the puzzle game.

Yes, as you hint, Ivory Mahjong is Taipei not mahjongg.

I believe my friend also called this game 'turtle' if I am not mistaken.

I'm a keen mahjongg player on or off PC. I have a couple of PC games but I don't know of any online versions. Most of the stuff you'll see around is nothing to do with mahjongg, it's called Taipei - the game or games where you have a stack of tiles and solve various puzzles. This has nothing to do with mahjongg but just uses the tiles.

Mahjongg is a 4-player game like poker, played with tiles originally made from ivory and bamboo, that resemble playing cards but are more durable. One day I'll scan in a set of mahjongg rules as they are very useful. There are some variants in the way the game is played, and especially, scored. I learnt from my uncle who lived in Singapore in the 1920's.

Not really traditional Mahjong, but I think this is what most have in mind anyway.

I suggest 'Ivory Mahjong'.

Yes, there're basically two types of Mahjong, one is traditional Mahjong meant for 4 players; the other is Mahjong solitaire, a matching game. Both use Mahjong tiles, but they are different games.

A download link (to a page, not directly to an executable) would be nice.

I am absolutely addicted to Gekko Mahjongg Xmas edition (free download), have been playing it for years. You download the application but can upload your score and compete with others around the world (top 100). Wonderful game. 3 levels. By GEKKO software, GmbH. 2.79 MB.
