Best Free File Manager for Android

X-plore File Manager (1.4 MB), a file manager with a well thought-out split screen view allows you to transfer files between folders on the same device and manipulate files and folders between devices easily. Loads of features, such as built-in viewers for images, video, audio and text. No adverts. (Review)

ES File Explorer (2.7 MB), explore files on your device, LAN shared and FTP servers in a list or icon view with settings such as theme and layout, search files by type or name, plus app manager, SD Card Analyst and other optional modules. (Review)

ASTRO File Manager (2.4 MB), manage your files in Icon or List view with sorting, bookmarks, searching and other common features, plus some useful tools like checking SD card usage by folders. On the downside, the free version comes with a small ad. (Review)

Best Free Storage Manager for Android

AppMgr III (App 2 SD) (1.9 MB), take a glance where the apps are installed and move them from internal storage to the SD Card to save limited space on your device. Also clear the cache to make more space. The free version is supported by a small unobtrusive ad.

Best Free Online Backup for Android

Dropbox (6.9 MB), upload and access files from your Android, and sync them between your computers and mobile devices on the go. Easy to use—tap a file to view or press and hold it to access the menu for managing files and sharing links. (Review)

Google Drive (12.7 MB), store your files including documents, photos and videos in this free cloud storage up to 15GB for backup and access anywhere. You can share any files with your contacts or access files shared with you. Even better, you can use this app to create and edit a Google document and spreadsheet, scan an image into PDF, and make files available offline.

OneDrive (11.8 MB), previously known as SkyDrive, offers 7 GB of free online storage as part of Microsoft services for new subscribers. The app allows you to upload files, photos and videos from your device to OneDrive, open files in other apps and share files by sending a link. The built-in feature Camera Backup lets you upload photos and videos automatically.

Best Free App Backup for Android

App Backup & Restore (380 KB), easily backup your installed apps to your SD cards, send apps to friends via email, or upload to Dropbox if already installed. Others features include restore or uninstall apps, auto backup, share market links, check app details and more.

Best Free File Encryption Utility for Android

File Locker (200 KB), protect your files from unauthorized access by encoding the content and file names as well. Smart searching through folders for documents, locked and unlocked files is a plus but it can't unlock a file that has been renamed.

Best Free File Archiver-Zip Utility for Android

ZArchiver (2.66 MB), create archive files in zip, 7zip, gzip, bzip2, tar or XZ format, and unzip or decompress archive files in even more supported formats. Features include view and edit archives, password-protected archives, multi-part archives and more.

B1 Free Archiver (3.7 MB), create password-protected zip and b1 archives, unzip more than 30 archive formats, open encrypted and splitted archives in supported formats. You can also browse files inside archives and extract only selected files, hide files from media scan and do more. (Review)

Defender is a good game to play. Added to the list.

Espier Launcher worked great and imitated quite closely most features used in launching apps in the iOS, except that overlapping one icon over the other to create a folder didn't work well when I tried it on my Android device. Hopefully its future version will work better.

Many thanks for all the suggestions and they will be looked into.

I really can't wait to see how "robot assistant" apps are gonna explode in the next year or two. At least the android market breeds competition and innovation between developers- Siri's got her work cut out for her! For instance, I got Everfriends yesterday- and instead of a robotic voice, you have animated cartoons that perform tasks while being entertaining and having personality. It's free too! (And if you think I'm shilling for them, look at all of the 5-star reviews it's got).

by Av_Crazy on 12. December 2011 - 12:27  (84886)

Also check airdroid - i dont know if u posted any alternative to that but airdroid has the best interface and is very fast and reliable..

by Jojo Yee on 15. December 2011 - 14:35  (85072)

When checked, AirDroid has yet to support video playback on a remote desktop that has been available for Browsix Lite.

That said, this app looks impressive and will still be good to add to the list as an alternative and thanks Av_Crazy for hightlighting it.

I can't agree with the choice for Best Free App Backup. The problem, as App Backup & Restore's market page says, is "App Backup cannot backup data or settings." That is a crucial feature.

Titanium Backup gets my vote. The free version does everything the Pro version does except multiple backup versions and batch restores. Multiple versions is rarely needed, but can be done manually by copying the Titanium Backup on the SD card.

[Moderator's note : Pricing about commercial version removed]

Strongly disagree.

Any product that requires ROOT should not be considered for Top 10 status as the Android experimentation community, noble and energetic as they are, is such a small part of the Android market. Most of us don't want to run the risk of bricking our phones and losing our warranties any more than we want to wind a key for 90 seconds to have 10 more minutes of power for our devices.

We want the app to work. We don't want to re-build our phones so they can work.

Task Switcher
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.shisho.taskswitcher&feature=search_result

A really simple, light task switcher, and useful. Press the home button and all your open active apps appear. Simply press an app to go to it or long press it to kill it. Or press the home button again to go to the real homepage. Then,it's useful because can show widget in task switcher. such as,use flashlight's widget to on device's camera LED quickly with task switcher.

by steveorg on 7. December 2011 - 17:23  (84587)

It may be worth pointing out that the operating system provides similar functionality out of the box. At least that's true for 2.2 (Froyo) and later. I can't be sure about earlier versions.

A long press on the home key displays active and recent apps. That screen has a Task Manager button for killing active apps.

by Jojo Yee on 6. December 2011 - 15:56  (84513)

Thanks Kai for your kind suggestion. Task Switcher is now added to the list.
