Hi Jojoyee

May I suggest the mobile app? I've found it to be incredibly useful. Wherever I go, whether using the 3g network or a Wifi hotspot, I can test the speed of my phone's connection so I can see what kind of performance to expect from my Internet-based apps.

Thanks for keeping such a helpful list. I have many of these apps installed on my phone and I couldn't imagine using it without them.

by abhay2009 on 1. July 2011 - 12:06  (74612)

Why Colornotes has been dropped from the list? The new version 3.0 comes with a calendar and reminder utility.

by Jojo Yee on 1. July 2011 - 14:17  (74614)

Glad that you like this list IronPlatypus and many thanks to all site members and visitors having made good suggestions.

Definitely Mobile is one of them to make to the list.

by Jojo Yee on 1. July 2011 - 15:51  (74616)

Another good suggestion Abhay2009. Added now and classified under Best Free Reminder/To-Do List as it's closer to that category in this list.

by abhay2009 on 6. July 2011 - 14:17  (74660)

I would also like to suggest 2 unique applications:
1. Relax and sleep - comes with unique ringtones to function as alarm and countdown timer utility.
2. Pulse - a news aggregator with beautiful interface.

Dear Jojoyee,

Pl consider above apps also.

I would like to share one thing about Go Launcher EX. When it is updated, it has to be selected as a default launcher. This can be solved forever by installing Home Manager to keep it default and to toggle between the launchers.

by imnoexpert on 2. July 2011 - 22:43  (74671)

Wonderful list, I've recently taken the plunge into Android and this will definitely help me to pick out the chaff.

I love Jorte, I use it all the time, I link it to my Google Calender so me and my wife can both see our schedule. I also use an app called 2X client on my tablet to connect to my PC upstairs, not really an app for everyone, but I find it really smooth and responsive.

I like the free anti-malware product from webroot.

by Jaikrishna on 4. July 2011 - 2:47  (74706)

Official Merriam-Webster Dictionary App is out. It is really great and also allows offline access. Has all the features that a dictionary must have.
It is recommended to replace this Dictionary over the old one.

Dear Jojoyee,

I have finalized a list of configuration for my Galaxy S phone, which I consider superior to stock applications and has satisfied me over a period of time:

1. App Launcher - Go Launcher EX
2. G---- theme (paid) - comes with fabulous icons and icon available for every app. Classic theme which is free, is also good and clean.
3. Note taking - Color notes and Evernote.
4. Reminder - color notes.
5. Calendar - Jorte and Color notes.
6. Alarm - ZD clock.
7. Battery apps- Batteryminder, Juice Defender and Battery Improver.
8. Diary writing - Diaro. PL INCLUDE THIS APP ALSO IN THE LIST!!
9. Sticher - Podcast application.
10. TOI - for news.
11. Dictionary - Merrium-Webster. THIS IS BETTER THAN ARCUS.
12. File Manager - File Expert.
13. Videos - mVideo player. A really good player!
14. Pictures - Quickpic.
15. Wallpaper - Flikie.
16. Ringtones - Ringtones Extended and Zedge.
17. P------- - Best paid player - worth investing.

There are many more applications. I have chosen them from this list and some of these are already suggested by me.

[Mod: Paid app names were removed according to the site rules.]

by RonnieJ on 4. July 2011 - 11:11  (74720)

Might be good, but it is NOT freeware..........

by Jaikrishna on 4. July 2011 - 11:29  (74722)

It is. That's why I mentioned it here. btw, I've tweaked through it and found it really good.

by MidnightCowboy on 4. July 2011 - 14:07  (74728)

Please supply a download link for the "free" app. All I can find say "license" and "buy now" in which case these comments will be removed unless you can help us out with a link?

by Jojo Yee on 4. July 2011 - 14:54  (74734)

Well organized and good suggestions.

Thanks Jaikrishna and Abhay2009 for mentioning Merrium-Webster Dictionary. Added to the list.

by Jojo Yee on 4. July 2011 - 15:14  (74736)

Yes MC, there are other versions and some titles which look quite similar are not free. The free one looks good and now added to the list.

by MidnightCowboy on 4. July 2011 - 15:44  (74739)

Thanks Jojo :)

by Jojo Yee on 5. July 2011 - 9:39  (74777)

After briefly trying out Diaro, I experienced a minor bug preventing a saved entry to show up if it was the first entry dated in a month earlier than the recorded month in my diary, though the entry did show up after re-starting the app. Or it might be just me.

Finding good apps for Android is many people's issue and this page does it in perfect structure and format. Great! Thanks!
What I could suggest to be added here is:

1. aDownloder: Amazing torrent download client. Note that it's the client itself not a torrent client remote control. if you want to have the internal search tool you should download the app from its website.

2. SugarSync: It's obvious I think. Just put it beside dropBox does the same thing as drop box + more. (specially synchronizing the photos you take on your mobile with your cloud space)

i've referenced back to techsupport for many years as one of the best sources of quality freeware. The android listing is great but as a number of people have suggested it now needs to broken down into individual areas like the listing for PC programs.

Also a number of the recommended programs are adware, i think techsupport needs to clearly label this software as adware, and with any luck android market will follow suit. keep up the good work

by Jojo Yee on 6. July 2011 - 16:38  (74875)

Thanks Abhay2009. I've briefly tried these two and need more time to test out to see their pros and cons while comparing them with other available freeware.

About after defaulting the Home button action to Go Launcher EX, I usually apply one of the following ways to clear its default action when needed:

1. Generic method: Clear default in Home button > Settings > Applications > Manage applications
2. Specific to this launcher: Home button > Preferences > Exit GO Launcher EX.

by abhay2009 on 7. July 2011 - 4:17  (74903)

But Home Manager provides an option to toggle between two launchers. If one freezes you can remove defaults easily without going through so many steps. Therefore request you to consider trying it.

I also request you to consider once again Youlu Address Book as it provides me very easy interface as compared to stock application. Further it has improved a lot since you reviewed for the last time.

Update: Replaced NewsRob with Pulse News which comes with more features. Pulse News also runs on iOS and added to Best Free iPad Apps.

Android ID3 has been renamed. Link is broken. New link is:

by Jojo Yee on 9. July 2011 - 3:54  (75074)

Many thanks Kon for the info. Renamed and updated with more details in the list.

by Jojo Yee on 9. July 2011 - 7:05  (75078)

Good suggestions Vahid. Added aDownloader to the list while SugarSync will be looked into.

by Moo Nomnom on 11. July 2011 - 19:10  (75233)

I would recommend reviewing more security tracking apps.
Lately I gave Prey on android a test to make sure it worked, and after a couple hours waiting I never received any reports. It seems for some phones prey doesn't work, at least not well. I guess the android version inst too good compared to computer.

by Jaikrishna on 13. July 2011 - 3:47  (75356)

I've tried almost all tracking apps and now I'm fixed with androidlost. It really does have a lot of features and provides all of them for free. Further, the app does no polling to the server, which saves battery. It uses Google's Push mechanism for all operations.
My favourite feature is switching on wifi or GPS from remote, and taking pics with the camera.

by abhay2009 on 15. July 2011 - 5:58  (75519)

Dear Jojoyee,

Pl look into Small Taskbar, a unique launcher and multi-tasking utility to supplment the default launcher app.

by Jojo Yee on 16. July 2011 - 3:59  (75599)

Is there a link Abhay2009 as I can't find it?

by abhay2009 on 16. July 2011 - 8:22  (75615)

I am sorry. I misspelt it.

You'll find it in Android Market/Productivity/Smart Taskbar (Sidebar).

by toesnz on 17. July 2011 - 10:12  (75685)

Alarm Klock should be considered for best free alarm clock, Alarmdroid is add supported, ZDclock needs full internet access [for an alarm clock this seems a little strange??]
