A compelling list, no doubt about it. Thank you for making it.

Two comments:

1. The ZArchiver icon has changed to a new one, update it please.

2. I would like to recommend a very small file manager called 'Fo File Manager' https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.seazon.fo It's a 330Kb download and shows the file attributes of any APK files you have, including the minimum version required. It also displays image files while showing their width and height. No ads, light and fast even on my old 800mhz phone running android 2.3.6.

by Jojo Yee on 22. April 2014 - 14:32  (115841)

Many thanks for your kind comments Rickybobby.

The ZArchiver app icon has now been updated.

Hello,

I am trying to fix an issue with a Sony Tablet S

Fortunately it has been rooted as I need to recover some deleted files from it.

My friends partner decided to 'play' with it.

Can you recommend a Freeware program to recover photos, contacts, messages, videos etc?

There are paid versions but I would rather not fork out any cash :-)

Regards,

Paul

I would like to recommend a program. I used to use Airdroid to transfer my books to my tablet/phone - that is until I found Wifi Transfer -
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smarterdroid.wififilet...
It is much easer to use thatn Airdroid.

I recently bought a Nexus 7.... I've never been crazy about the ipad and its dependence on itunes for any movies... also the ridicuously high price for an ipad here in Australia... $350 to $750 depending on the size.

Very happy so far with the Nexus 7 but I don't seem to be able to find "Adobe Flash Player" for it.
....apparently discontinued for the latest Android.

Do any of you have an alternative replacement for it ?

by Jojo Yee on 23. February 2014 - 3:59  (114605)

@terrawarra, please check out this page "How do I manually install Flash Player on my Android device?" which may help.

by terrawarra on 23. February 2014 - 4:03  (114606)

Thanks for your prompt advice Jojo.... I'll give it a go !

by terrawarra on 23. February 2014 - 4:46  (114607)

Just downloaded an archived version of Adobe Flash but after reading a little more on various forums, I've decided to hold back on installing until I can be sure that it wont stuff up Nexus 7.

I have the latest version of Android which I believe is KitKat.... too many comments advising against making Flash work with it.

The only other advice I've found is to use the Dolphin Browser but I'm reluctant to part with Chrome.

In the meantime, I'll do a little more homework on the subject.

by terrawarra on 25. February 2014 - 5:10  (114637)

I finally downloaded and installed the Dolphin browser and a "hacked-for- kitkat" version of Adobe Flash Player.

It's working like a charm on my Nexus 7 and I'm starting to actually like the "Dolphin" browser. Not as as slick as Chrome but I sure do like the easy access to bookmarks simply by swiping left to right !

360 Mobile Security is a joy to use, and it includes a very convenient Flashlight and Cache Cleaner which work very well. Maybe worth mentioning the program under these categories too?

by Mikezzz on 1. January 2014 - 20:59  (113321)

I would recommend the app called aCalendar. It shows text in the month view on a phone better than Calendar pad does. I have used it for several months and it has always been reliable.
Thanks for this site. I have used it a lot.

by Jojo Yee on 2. January 2014 - 8:50  (113341)

A good suggestion Mikezzz. aCalendar has now been added to this list.

by avid fan on 18. October 2013 - 11:35  (111560)

many thanks for all involved in the website - it's been a lifesaver for finding good freeware and now it's come in handy again as I get onto android (late, admittedly).

I've built up a good list of apps to add to my new device, but I did notice you're missing one important category - kid's education!

Most people seem to get tablets for kid's educational purposes, and a quick browse on Google Play indicates many many different apps for maths, language and other skills.

We're looking for good apps for kids from 3-6, so if you or others can recommend any particularly good educational apps for them it would be much appreciated.

Highly recommend the game for Android called 'Bottle Crash'
Have had the app on my Note 2 for 3 months, with no problems
The best thing about this game is that the advertisements are not obvious
Many bottles flying up on the screen, and you throw ninja weapons.
Watch out for the bombs that are also thrown in front of you
Highly recommended as a test of concentration
I have no affiliation with this game

I always appreciate a good security app, can't have enough security these days... I'll check out Trustgo! Thanks!

I have not seen any reference to Android Lost
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidlost

It's the best, most simple, cool featured security app I have seen.

Not only can I lock my phone remotely (from pc or other phone), I can remotely unlock it, erase data, send it a message, make it sound a loud siren, have it take a picture, have it display a message like "low battery warning" when the OK is pressed it snaps a picture and sends it to me... If stolen, I now have a photo of the bad guy/gal and also can get the GPS co-ordinates...

Lots of other features too, very useful, very simple app. I just love it. Best security app I found.

Certainly yes Av_Crazy, you have been one of the great contributors to recommending good apps including this list.

And yes the Holo theme design introduced since Android 4.0 ICS is a good trend for better cohesion between all apps on the Android OS and I believe more apps will adapt to it soon. I'll look into those that you've specifically recommended.

The Evernote icon has now been fixed.

I didn't know phones or ipads could get viruses. Thanks for the great advise here.

by abhay2009 on 25. June 2013 - 14:52  (108713)

I have come across an amazing backup and sync app for all devices and pc called Scatter. Dear Jojoyee, I highly recommend to add to this list

by Anupam on 26. June 2013 - 10:01  (108734)

Please post links for the apps, when you post suggestions. The app suggested is here:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appfour.scatter

Users are advised caution as the app is in beta.

by DaRK.STaR on 22. June 2013 - 2:19  (108652)

May I suggest to add Viber to the Best Free Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) for Android list? I know it had some ups and downs along the time, but the newer versions have improved the voice quality a lot and they have finally launched the desktop app that works pretty well too.

by Australia on 29. May 2013 - 4:46  (108112)

Regarding the "Best Free Apps Protection for Android"
I recommend APP Lock by DoMobile Lab. Has excellent reviews on Google Play
I have installed and used it on Samsung Note 2, and it is a rock solid stable app to lock any or all apps you chose
I have no affiliation with this program

by Jojo Yee on 30. May 2013 - 8:08  (108145)

A good suggestion Australia. APP Lock is now added to the list.
