Admittedly, Internet Explorer has nothing like the sheer variety that FireFox users can obtain, but the add-ins reviewed here do a pretty solid job of enhancing your surfing experience. All of these tools have FireFox equivalents, which are often available from the same download source. Internet Explorer users probably already know that they can also easily add the Google Toolbar, the Yahoo Toolbar, and the Windows Live Toolbar, so these products are not reviewed here. (But see also Best Free Search Toolbar.) |

The outstanding product is IE7Pro. This add-in not only provides a vital ad-blocking service, but adds tab management, spell checking, bookmark synchronisation, proxy switching, mouse gestures, and more, including truly excellent crash recovery. There's even a scripting feature that allows you to add more functionality, including a rather neat skin for Gmail. With all these additional features, you can convert IE7 into an almost passable alternative to Firefox! Seriously, IE7Pro is a terrific product and a must for all IE7 users. [NB: IE7Pro is now bundled with OpenCandy. See this article for more information.] The best alternative is Quero, which also includes a strong (and highly customizable) ad blocker, but it lacks some of the features in IE7Pro. It is, in my opinion, prettier than IE7Pro, and supplies and encourages user-created themes. After you install StumbleUpon and specify topics of interest, it will present to you, one at a time, those sites which it considers to be relevant. StumbleUpon "learns" from the ratings (thumbs up or thumbs down) you assign to these sites, and continually fine-tunes the range of sites it presents to you. You can also recommend sites to others, and connect with those who have similar interests. delicious also embraces social networking, and lets you bookmark sites and apply keyword tags.
ieSpell is an excellent spell checker that integrates directly into Internet Explorer. It allows you to add your own words to the dictionary, look up definitions in Merriam-Webster online, or link to Wikipedia. You can integrate it with Microsoft Office spell checker, and they will then share the same custom dictionary.
McAfee SiteAdvisor
Inline Search effectively duplicates Firefox's search capabilities. It bypasses the normal Internet Explorer floating search box, and allows you to search matches as you type. Note: If you use IE7Pro (above), you will get this as part of the install.
Open Last Closed Tab allows you to re-open any tabs you've previously closed. After you've closed a tab, and wished you hadn't, press Alt-X and the tab will reopen to the Web site you were visiting. This add-in addresses all the tabs you've opened in a particular session. Although this duplicates one of the features of IE7Pro, it's ideal if you just want a tab-handling feature.
Readers typically consolidate web content, such as news headlines, blogs, podcasts, and vlogs, into a single location. Altough IE7 has a built-in RSS reader, Feeds Plus adds a few nice features, such as the ability to read groups of feeds in a combined view, and notification of new content in a feed. |

How about trendprotect by trendmicro?
WOT should be here surely?
WOT should NOT be here. It flagged too many good sites.
We have a small caterogization problem here.
See:
http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/best-internet-safety-check.htm
These three should be listed imho.
Xippee - http://www.xippee.com/
Affine - http://www.calvert.ch/affine/
WOT - http://www.mywot.com/
Web of Trust should be in this list, it's more useful than SiteAdvisor.

Like SiteAdvisor ... TrendProtect

Has anyone compared this in any meaningful way with SiteAdvisor? I like TrendMicro's free stuff, just generally.
Intuitively, I suspect that SiteAdvisor will do a better job, though, simply because it's the product of an older and better-known company which has managed to get it into more copies of IE out in the world.... With a product like this, that's the most important aspect: The sheer size of the database and the number of sites that SiteAdvisor actually knows about so that it can actually rate sites and warn about ones to avoid.
I notice that darned few sites turn the little SiteAdvisor indicator gray (meaning that SiteAdvisor knows nothing about it). Most web sites I visit (and it's a lot of sites) have either a green or a red SiteAdvisor indicator... meaning that SiteAdvisor knows about the site... whether it's safe or not....
Affine is a free Internet Explorer addin which allows you to hide unwanted sites from your search engine results.
Maybe you'd like to add it to your list?
Hello folks could someone please tell me what the Ultimate Download Manager is? It is listed under the tools selection in IE7. How do you make it work?
Thank you
koniecz

Yesterday when I heard about UnlockForUs blogspot website here. I read many articles and one add-on in IE that he created. It's called Youtube File Hack Tool. The program is a non-sticky, doesn't run on a background (as he decribes). Just Right-Click and Download, you can download the youtube video easily.

I'm having some fun with your website... Great articles too... thanks!
I too had constant crashes after installing IE7 Pro. I tried uninstalling it but the crashes persisted so I reinstalled it (yes, still crashing) then I turned off all the modules in it, and all the options, and saved those settings, THEN unnistalled it, and I seem to have gotten my browser stability back (IE7 on Vista Ultimate). This add-on was a GREAT idea, but that kind of bugginess is just not cool.
What he said!
I tried IE7Pro and It messed up my browser. It kept crashing or telling me my system had crashed when I know there was no problem at all. It would be nice to have but it was a big nuisance and I have returned to stability after uninstalling it.
I did use Site Adviser before building a new computer and it worked well. I need to reinstall it.
Wow! To a Firefox user none of those sound interesting! After, 3 plugins unspecific to IE; 2 plugins doing functionality built-in to Firefox; 1 plugin that is an alternative to another in the list; there's not much left. You're right! There's not much to IE plugins. Note: The Product Details section comes in what seems to be a random order, different than the general list, which makes it confusing to look for something!
