9 Superb Free Apps that you Simply Must Install on Your Android Phone

Introduction

AndroidsIn our list of Best Free Android Apps, we've selected more than 100 apps grouped in various categories, with a brief description of each program.

To save you time working out exactly which apps you need most we've selected from that long list nine "must-have" free Android apps that will add key features and functions for your new mobile phone.

  1. Dialer-One
  2. GO-SMS-Pro
  3. aContacts
  4. Dolphin-Browser-HD
  5. File-Expert
  6. Barcode-Scanner
  7. Easy-Uninstaller
  8. TaskPanel-XTRA
  9. Lookout

All such lists are to some extent subjective, so if you think we have missed out on a great product you feel should be included then post a comment below. Remember we are only interested in free apps that you feel should be installed on every Android device.

9 Best Free Android Apps for Your New Android Phone or Device

Dialer OneA new device loaded with the Android operating system (version 2.2 in this review) comes with a default Phone app. To make a phone call, one has to tap the Phone app icon from the Home screen, key in a contact number and press the Call button. Or alternatively, one can switch to the Call Log, Contacts or Favorites tab, choose a contact and press the Call button.

Couldn't this process be simplified? Yes it can. And with the Dialer One app it all becomes so much easier and better.

A single tap on the Dialer One icon brings up pretty much everything you need straight off (saving you from having to fiddle around with other buttons). You get a call log with recent incoming, outgoing or missed calls, allowing you to redial the number or reply easily. Better still, there's a smart T9 dial pad offering speed dialling and simultaneous search on calls and contacts. Pressing a few keys on the dial pad gets you to the matched contacts instantly.

GO SMSAfter phone calls, SMS is seen as the second most important feature in a phone. The default Messaging app meets a rather basic need to compose a new message, but having to type out the recipient's name or phone number is a drawback on Android 2.2. This annoyance can be overcome by installing a replacement SMS app such as GO SMS, which is definitely one of the best.

After composing a new message, you press the '+' button next to "To", type in a few characters of a contact name and GO SMS will find the contact for you. Just select your contact and click "Send". You can also tick multiple contacts if you're sending the same message to more than one recipient.

You can also set GO SMS for message popup alerts, quick reply, chat style, multi themes, messages and folders view, emoji support and more.

3.  aContacts

aContactsThe default Contacts app looks like a sub-module of the main Phone app, just giving you some basic functions to search, create and edit contacts, add contacts to favorites, or add accounts and sync contacts in the accounts.

Fortunately, there are some great free apps to enhance its functions. One of them is aContacts. This free app allows you to organize your contacts by groups (either as co-workers, friends or family) or list contacts alphabetically. This makes your contacts easier to find, especially if you have a long list of contacts.

You can long press a contact not only to make a call, send an SMS or email, but also to group a contact, check call history, set a reminder to call or add an event in the Calendar. With aContacts, all these extra features are available to you at no cost and free of ads.

Dolphin Browser HDDolphin Browser HD is a powerful web browser for Android which gives you a multi-tab browsing similar to what you get at home on your PC. It's a must-have for this outstanding feature alone.

The experience is much faster than continuously switching between windows by pressing the Menu button, as you have to do with the default Browser.

Another good feature on Dolphin Browser is the optional Mobile view. This proves to be very productive when you want to browse a webpage and read a full paragraph of text wrapped around the screen, without constantly having to scroll from side to side.

Other features are not lacking. They include bookmarking and syncing, multi-touch zooming, back and forward navigation, HTML5 support, and some versatile add-ons.

File ExpertYour new phone comes with a default File Browser, which gives you some basic file operations such as create new folders, copy, delete, rename, search and so on. But you may find you need more functions.

File Expert is a free app which improves on the default File Browser. In addition to the basic file operations, you can easily bookmark and access your frequently used folders, just like you do with a desktop file explorer.

File Expert's quick access buttons at the bottom of the screen facilitate navigation and provide many extra features. One I frequently use is called HTTP Server. It allows you to copy files between your PC and mobile device via Wifi without needing a USB cable—just tap the Share icon and select WEB sharing to get the URL, user name and password, enter them into your PC's web browser, and your mobile device is wirelessly linked to the PC. It's as simple as that.

Other additional features incorporated by File Expert include SMB Client, App Manager, Zip and Unzip, text viewer and more.

Barcode ScannerOne of the easiest ways to install an Android app is to use Barcode Scanner, a handy and efficient tool developed by ZXing Team.

Barcode Scanner lets you use your device's built-in camera to scan a Quick Response (QR) Code containing an app identifier, like the ones you see in this article. In a few seconds after scanning, it decodes the QR code. You just need to press the "Open in browser" button, and the app is ready for you to install—much quicker than typing out the app's name to search with the Market app.

The Android Market website now allows you to press the 'Install' button in your PC's browser to install an app to your mobile device... but to do so you must be signed in to your Gmail account associated with the device. The Barcode Scanner saves you this hassle.

Barcode Scanner also allows you to scan and share other information such as contacts, bookmarks or text messages via a QR Code. A must-have tool, and it's small in size.

Easy UninstallerOn a new phone, you can uninstall an app by pressing Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage applications. But this becomes cumbersome if you're trying out different apps to find the ones you like and you have to go through all these steps each time you want to  uninstall one.

As its name implies, Easy Uninstaller makes uninstalling apps much quicker and easier. A tap on the app icon instantly takes you to the list of apps, which can be sorted by names, sizes or dates of installation.

Moreover, you can multi select apps you want to uninstall at one go, without the need to keep coming back to the list.

Although File Expert also comes with an App Manager to uninstall programs, this app gives you more info on each program file and provides a powerful sorting function. So Easy Uninstaller is a real step up.

TaskPanel XTRAA standard Android phone usually has a set of four hard buttons—Back, Search, Home and Menu. When you run an app and press the Back button, you get back to the Home screen but the app is still running in the background. Surprisingly, quite a number of apps seem to behave this way without terminating themselves.

To quit a running app, you would have to press Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Running, then select an app to stop it from running.

TaskPanel makes your life easier—just one tap on "Kill All Normal Tasks" stops all apps from running  in the background. This reduces memory usage immediately and makes your device less laggy over extensive use.

Note that TaskPanel can't kill services, since Android 2.2 has disabled 3rd party apps from doing this. But to save time, a tap on a service instantly takes you to the system's setting menu where you're allowed to stop services from running.

9.  Lookout

LookoutThere's no anti-malware program pre-installed in Android 2.2. But you can get one free to protect your mobile device.

Lookout is a reliable security program that provides an easy way to protect your device and data by blocking viruses, spyware or other malware.

Lookout scans every app you install with automatic antivirus updates. It also backs up your contacts to the web, and allows you to restore data to a phone. You can also use it to trace your phone should it go missing .

The main features should be enough for average users. Unfortunately, other advanced features such as Privacy Advisor are only available on the paid-for premium version.

I prefer "MY SALES DIALER" over "DIALER ONE"! Because Dialer One is a improved phone dialing system. Whether My Sales Dialer is call center in mobile, it is a mobile predictive dialer with CRM, you don't need to configure it with any system, only install it to your mobile and you can use it.
You can use it with mobile network provider or VoIP.
Regards,

link2sd is a MUST have for people with phones that don't have enough on-board memory.

taskpanel xtra is buggy i think. no widget, plus my sms is not showing up when i type now. it only started after i installed and ran this program. might wanna review this one a bit more.

Dropbox is good but it's not as good as Tonido.. Tonido works on all your computers and phones and lets you stream movies and music and have photo albums and even an inhouse blog.

For SMS..It's got to be Handcent SMS.. there is no other worth even looking at!

But the award for the best Android app PERIOD goes to Browsix.. it lets you play movies, music and send/recieve texts and browse your files all from your computer browser with no complicated setup.. you just install the app and type the address it gives you into your browser on your computer and off you.. your texts then arrive on your computer screen! No cable needed.

by Jojoyee on 19. April 2011 - 7:40  (70513)

Thanks Anonymous42 for mentioning Browsix. The free version is Browsix Lite which is good for viewing multimedia files from the PC wirelessly. For these outstanding features, I've added Browsix Lite to the list of Best Free Android Apps.

Despite that, I noticed that some functions for file operations were unfortunately restricted to the paid for version. Besides, Browsix Lite failed to expand the folders of the SD Card when I tried running it on my device, while File Expert's HTTP server mentioned in this article worked perfectly on the same device for me at no cost.

If I use a "non default" SMS app, can I disable the default one? I currently use Handcent SMS, when I received SMS, the message was shown up on both apps.
If I can disable the default SMS app it'd be awesome :)

by Jojoyee on 31. March 2011 - 14:14  (69042)

An easy way to go is to disable the default app's notification on the status bar. Run the default Messaging app, go to Menu > Settings, then untick Notifications. Hope this helps.

A couple of suggestions from me, if you're after more entries for the list.

Dropbox. If you have Dropbox on your PC, install the Android app and you can copy any file to your dropbox (and thus to your PC) by simply right-clicking it on your phone (with the necessary menu button) and choosing the relevant option from the Share menu. Makes it really easy to pull photos etc off the phone.

Swiftp. An FTP server for your phone. Another way to make it very easy to move batches of files to/from your phone without the need for a cable.

What have these to do with computers?

Really enjoy this site for PC ('puters... not Politically Correct :)).

Bit like saying opera and reggae is all music :)

I think the OP is requesting that we maintain focus on our core content and don't attempt to integrate everything into one bowl of soup.

Rest assured we will continue to cater for all categories, new and existing, within the limits of our volunteers to manage them.

Some folks (like me :)) will never festoon their bodies with electronic gadgets (except for a standard cellphone) but others can't live without them. We recognize this and try to provide content suitable for all tastes and ability levels.

We cover free software on the site. Free software can also be for mobiles, and so we cover that too :). We are not straying away, just widening our horizons ;).

Thank you for the great list! I even had a couple of the apps already installed.

You're welcome S-Mart.

8. TaskPanel XTRA is totally useless, like all task killers for android. Android/linux is built to have apps running in the background to get fast acess to previously used apps. You should only use a task killer if an app crash. That you could do with the built in one. Killing apps automatic just makes more problems.

9. Lookout I can't figure out who this should work. Who could it know that an app i dangerous. App that are dangerous google remove from the market. You grant the apps permission to do what ask for. This can't work!

by Dutchtreat (not verified) on 23. July 2011 - 0:21  (76060)

"You should only use a task killer if an app crash. That you could do with the built in one. Killing apps automatic just makes more problems."

Au contraire, mon ami... some apps keep polling the internet and use up data bandwidth, thus running you up to the limit even if that is not your intention. Not only that, but they take up memory space, which slows down your phone, just like having too many programs running on your PC slows down your PC.

by kendall on 17. March 2011 - 20:04  (68116)

I totally disagree. I've used a number of so-called task killers and TaskPanel XTRA is the best. All I can tell you is that my Motorola Global phone used to last barely a day without needing a re-charge. In fact, many days it didn't last a whole day. I installed and started using TaskPanel XTRA and my phone easily lasts a day and sometimes even two. I wouldn't be without it.

by IronPlatypus on 17. March 2011 - 14:44  (68086)

I've been following the Android super list since its inception, and I'm really liking it and this list of 9. I'll be making excellent use of it when I get my first Android phone next month. Much appreciated!

by Anonymous42 (not verified) on 15. April 2011 - 11:17  (70231)

Well, for me the list is very p0or, and I'm a developer... there are so many better apps out there.

by mr6n8 on 15. April 2011 - 11:22  (70232)

Such as?

by Green_Underwear (not verified) on 17. March 2011 - 13:38  (68080)

I just finally got a new Android smartphone. 'Once you go Droid you can't avoid'. Something like that. Excellent list and good jod. I had no idea there are smartphone viruses but it does make sense to protect. Thanks a bunch!

Winamp for the media player !

by Mr X (not verified) on 17. March 2011 - 12:42  (68075)

I can highly recommend Thrutu as a useful app too - it allows you to share content during a phone call with one button press. You need both ends to install it, but once it's setup I find I use it all the time.

by BL2 (not verified) on 17. March 2011 - 9:08  (68063)

Totally agree with Lookout and File Expert - both excellent apps. My only question would be the need for the first three apps. My HTC Desire is running Android 2.2 and the standard software already includes almost all the plus points you mention for these three. Not sure if this is down to HTC's software, but I think it's standard android for those three options? Thanks for the article!

by Jojoyee on 17. March 2011 - 9:51  (68067)

That's a good point BL2. Based on my understanding, HTC Desire provides HTC Sense interface with HTC Widgets in addition to the standard built-in applications on Android 2.2.
